The trick to FOTS with firearm infantry, is to use layers. Like, instead of having 6 units out in a line. Have a tiered systemwith like 3 in the front, 3 in the back.
hey ogirls did you know that infantry formations have layers
"WHat do you mean I can prevent all my firearm units from being forced into meele combat, by only letting like 2 of them get into it out of ten?"
You're doing something wrong if the enemy is willing to engage in melee attacks against your line and not rout as they approach. [SUP][sp]BOMBARD THE SHIT OUT OF THEM WITH ARMSTRONG GUNS[/sp][/SUP]
As you progress in FotS you eventually phase out the need for traditional units entirely, just keep working at it.
Was I the only one who had an army or two made completely of samurais and the like in FOtS? It was awesome just rushing bitches with big ass army of vet dudes with swords. I also had one or two samurai unites per normal shooty army just for kicks.
As you progress in FotS you eventually phase out the need for traditional units entirely, just keep working at it.
I'm only using them to garrison settlements at this point because they're affordable and cheap to maintain in large quantity.
On the subject of infantry charging your line infantry- I did an experiment today with this gorgeous map I downloaded. Basically my army was composed of entirely 1340 Tosa Riflemen and a General unit, while the enemy army was composed of 4086 or so Line Infantry and Levy Infantry in equal amounts. [img_thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/578979241830782466/26323C9C224C561DB658137AD8F8D4ADA643DB94/[/img_thumb] See that ridge on the left, and the mirrored one on the other side of the forest-less gap? I had a crap ton of Riflemen units stationed against the edges of each one, while diversion riflemen dug in in that gap between the two ridge lines. They attacked, barely used their guns and charged my lines, coming in from all angles like a horde of bees. [img_thumb]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/578979241830839996/9A3CC6BB871AAF8140F655B1E4D58AF5828A1F99/[/img_thumb] On my right flank (left in the first picture) my lines broke and were overwhelmed, so I had to adopt guerilla hit and run tactics by skirmish mode abuse and sacrificial melee's. The two remaining units out of like 6 on that flank hid in a forest and sniped their General as they returned to the middle of the field, where: [img_thumb]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/578979241830871864/54EB95F8FFB5D775F07E5F3D0744587AE8FA2144/[/img_thumb] I had taken up position on their side of the river, as the left flank of mine had managed to pull through and beat back the enemy on that side and flank them. They tried to charge across water again with a dead General, and the rest of their army routed. I just reinstalled RTW after a couple of years of not playing a Total War game. I slapped on Roma Surrectum as I've played vanilla to death and holy shit. Having 2 deathstacks on your doorstep, one of them led by a 10 star general, on turn 1 was not the start I was expecting. I'm really enjoying it though, I remembered why I spent so much time playing these games. I'll probably reinstall Medieval 2 Kingdoms when I'm done with RS, just for the sweet mods like Call of Warhammer.

Its pretty disgraceful of CA that after so many years that bug is still really common. One time a Russian settlement of mine rebelled and an army of Cossack rebels appeared. If you want to know how their army looked, imagine a normal Russian army, only the weird facestretch texture and skin was covering most of their uniforms.

Wow that looks great.
So I'm just doing a new Choshu playthrough, allied with all the nations on the west most Island, when this shit happened. [img_thumb]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/578979337056233375/C5BA9EDE3AABB6C63DC9F24DE5FE8C3EBC00F848/[/img_thumb] Whuh? this is more out of character than Agent 47 showing affection towards little girls. [img_thumb]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/578979337056237096/04FB6D0D2A0DCEFAC131DE8D6BD2BDC8378F4397/[/img_thumb] You've got to be fucking kidding me. Never leave your cities undefended. What you might lose defending a siege is far fewer than being the besieger.
Never leave your cities undefended. What you might lose defending a siege is far fewer than being the besieger.
I didn't, my garrison army moved out of the city and I could of swore it said I was in attack range. I wasn't.
Is it just me or does the AI cheat so hard in Shogun that supremely superior player infantry are equal to the most basic of basic AI peasant infantry. Okay: I can't play Shogun for shit. I've made entire multi continental empires in Empire but I can't fund an army of greater than 10 units in Shogun without going bankrupt, the AI always has more morale than me, and I often take several times more casualties than kills in sieges.
Shame my computer hates fun and won't let the WW1 mod work
So is there any way to directly post Steam screenshots? I tried accessing their image URLs but it doesn't work for some reason.

I do pretty fine in Shogun.
Alright I've got a few questions regarding Rome: Total War. I've never played a Total War game before, however I bought a few for cheap during some sales a little while back. My graphics card is currently being replaced by warranty, and for the time being I'm using a GeForce 7900 GS, which has caused me to not be able to play the majority of games in my Steam library and as such I'm looking for older games to play, and this is where Rome: Total War came in. Now I'm wondering, first of all, will I be able to run Rome: Total War without any problems with card? After a bit of searching around I did establish the recommended card is any card with 128MB VRAM, but I'm wondering if I will be able to run the game with all settings and what not on the highest possible settings with a 256MB card (I'm hoping to be able to get the best possible experience from the game). Also, excuse my ignorance of the franchise, but how story based are these games? I'm looking for a game which I can kind of just pick up for a few days and put down without needing/wanting to worry about finishing the story. And if there is a story, is it a very long one? I would appreciate an answer in how many hours it will roughly take to finish if that's possible. Thanks in advance.

If not everything on high, medium at least. With total war games there is no "story" the story is history. You start out the game in the year 270 b.c. and you can choose from a number of factions to play as. The goal is to become powerful and build an empire, beating the AI factions, but really the goal can be anything you want. Maybe you wanna play as the nomadic Scythians and your goal is to let the romans become strong then invade them as a huge horde. Maybe you want to play as the Egyptians and migrate your people to Britain. It's pretty open ended and there isn't really like a story or anything beyond that.
Its a bit less open ended when you play as the romans though, since you gotta do those senate quests and eventually you have to deal with a civil war.
I love how this thread will be dead for days, only to explode with 15 posts in one minute.
So is there any way to directly post Steam screenshots? I tried accessing their image URLs but it doesn't work for some reason.
Copy their URL and post it in a browser. It will take you to the profile page. Then you can copy the image URL directly .
So is there any way to directly post Steam screenshots? I tried accessing their image URLs but it doesn't work for some reason.
You have to upload them, then when they show up in the steam browser click the image so a window appears and then do copypaste URL.
Uhhh I think you're doing something wrong. I do pretty fine in Shogun.
No you don't get it. They're not bearing me from a tactical point of view, they're beating individual infantry units 1v1 on flat ground or even 2v1 with me having the greater force.
Reminds me of me playing the battle of hastings and having my 4 knight units getting pounded by harold's general unit.
Naval battles are fucking dull as shit. Have less ships? You lose. Want to innovate to have less casualties? You'll just lose harder. [editline]25th January 2013[/editline] I was considering Alt-F4ing from FotS into my 3rd attempt at a Shogun campaign, in which 75% of the island declares war on me, but the game crashed instead. That feels worse.
