Pathfinder is basically the new go-to for people. It was my first TRPG and by god I still play it three years later. It is still growing and is backwards compatible with anything you might have for 3.5e since it is basically just an upgraded version. I really recommend snagging yourself a corebook ($60), a bestiary ($20), a GM Guide (i dunno i don't own one), and a Campaign Setting (don't own this either). You could probably cut down on some cost by going to a local gamestore and seeing if they have used books. I was tempted to pick up Anima since it was only $20 used, which is a far better deal than $60-$70 new.
All the basics needed to play and dm and make characters and such are on the free website, it may take a bit of digging for some of the more obscure things but really it has everything you would need for the most part.

In 4e, what skill do you guys recommend if someone wants to skin an animal?
Yesterday, one of my players wanted to skin a kobold so I had them roll for Nature.
[editline]23rd February 2013[/editline]
Also, had my first bigger session yesterday. We ran out of time since everyone got there late, but we got to play a more fleshed out combat encounter.
Save for picking creatures with waaay too high AC, it went pretty well. We got our first critical hit which was really exciting after so many melee misses.
Also, our cleric rolled a critical failures, so I said her scythe went flying a square behind her and she needed to run over to pick it up :v:
nature sounds good
i mean it is closer than any other skill

The main things keeping me away from 4E are 1) the book cost, which is pretty high, and 2) the simplifications I do know about. For instance, I always liked the idea of the chaotic/lawful good/evil system, and how it avoided simple good/evil - so 4E simplifying it into a range of good/evil kind of turns me off, and if they made that change, I feel like they made a lot of others that made it "simpler" by getting rid of useful options.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I rarely use alignment at all, as a player or a DM, so I fully supported 4e's move towards simplification of alignment. Meanwhile, Pathfinder basically ensures you must go by the alignment restrictions your class puts on you (paladins must always be lawful good, clerics must be one step away from their god's alignment). But honestly, just change the alignment in 4e if you want to. Nothing in the book says you can't, and unlike Pathfinder there aren't any major game mechanics that rely on alignment. Of course you can say the same for Pathfinder (I have it houseruled where paladins don't need to be LG, but they can't be evil) too.
Alternatively, you can also download the D&D Next playtest packet. It's free, and I can tell you as someone who DM'd a Next game for a while it really does feel like both older editions and the newer ones at the same time. Simple, but not oversimplified.
I swear to god the DM for my Pathfinder session is fucking retarded. Hey heres a bright fucking idea. Lets put a party of level 4s, against a bitch who can do 41 damage, with one spell. Not even our freaking fighter could have taken that without a thought, let alone a support character.

I put my party of ( levels 1 through 5 ) against four cyclopes. Despite the cyclops double-critting someones riding dog for 154 damage, there were no (important) casualties.
Hey I'm looking for any session that is accepting another guy, I can make basically any times, just PM me when and I can probably do it.

The spell had a range of 160 feet, required no line of sight, was uninterruptible, and did 10d6 of damage. The only way to possibly counter the spell was for a caster of equal level to use a counterspell, but guess what? The caster is two levels above us making it essentially impossible for anyone targeted by it to survive.

So essentially your DM deliberately killed his target. Time to find a new GM.

you should confront him about it, tell him to take the enemies down a notch.
My party in our gestalt campaign just had the biggest and longest fight of all we've ever fought. We're Sten the Fighter/Rogue (me), Mordak the (blind) Ranger/Druid, Frichard the Sorcerer/Barbarian and Sandor, the Fighter/Bard (NPC).
We're walking through the Barach desert, looking for the city of the Basilisk tribe, when a huge set af jaws emerges from the sand and bites my leg. I get 22 damage, setting me back to 17 HP, and from below us emerges an Abyssal Greater Basilisk. We're gestalts, so we're thinking we're probably strong enough to kill it. The fight begins.

Sandor attacks with his rapier. No damage. I turn and run, because shit, only 17 HP left, and it had like +25 to attack. More than enough to hit anyone. Mordak summons a Large Stone Elemental, which attacks. Some damage. Then our Frichard, the Barbarian/Sorcerer, tries to jump up on the back of the beast, so it can't look at him. And then things begin to go bad. On his way through the air, he catches a glimpse of the eye and is immediately turned to stone. He dumps down on the ground and is out for the rest of the fight (he was pretty pissed). The basilisk attacks the Stone Elemental, which of course can't be turned to stone.
A few rounds pass where we try to damage it. My arrows don't do any damage, Sandors rapier neither (we're starting to understand that it has DR 10), and the Stone Elemental is losing the battle. I can't move Frichard, and my healing water doesn't turn him back. So I run up to the Basilisk and, thanks to flanking and my +4d6 sneak attack, start doing some real damage. Fortunately it only has AC 17, and due to buffs and so on I have +17 to attack. But then the Stone Elemental dies. Mordak casts a Wall of Fire through the basilisk, which does minimal damage (turns out it has DR 10 against fire too). As it starts turning towards me and Sandor, I duck out of the way, and Sandor is turned to stone. Shit. Only 2 guys left.
To save me, Mordak sets up a wall of stone between me and the basilisk. As it starts pummelling the wall, I run around and starts discussing with Mordak. He has an idea to trick it. So he tries to use Shape Stone to make two statues of us, that we can then meld into and trick the basilisk (horrible idea, I know). However, he fails to make any of the statues (except one) look like us (30% failure chance, four statues). He melds into it, and the basilisk turns around and sees us. I start a hasty retreat, seeing as I'm alone now, and it follows me. Thankfully Mordaks trick worked. He melds out of the statue, and succeeds on casting Dominate Animal on the basilisk. He can give it commands for 8 turns, but nothing suicidal. Seeing as I'm running away, and it doesn't know Mordak is there, the GM allows him to command it to lie down and close its eyes. Makes sense, it's probably tired. I see this, and quickly sneak back. The basilisk is helpless, so I seize the opportunity and deliver a coup de grace.
Coup de grace grants automatic crit and instant death with a fortitude DC of 10+damage dealt. With my greataxe and my sneak attack, I manage to deliver 44 damage.
It survives.
But now the DC for the fortitude check is 54, which is of course impossible. Unless...
It rolls a natural 20 and survives.
Luckily it is now Mordaks turn, and he orders it to turn and flee. As it starts running, we draw our relieved breaths. But then we remember that the spell will end in a few seconds. I decide to go in for a final sneak attack with my bow, and so I hide away. As the basilisk returns to kill us off, I fire three sneak attack arrows at it. We're talking damage of 3d8 + 12d6 + 3 or something. Major damage.
It survives.
Now it attacks Mordak, and he can take a few hits, enough for me to barely defeat it while flanking. As it lies bleeding out, Mordak tries to execute it. And that giant, stone-turning reptile of a motherfucker survives, so when I at last finish it off, we're all amazed. The GM is amazed we survived, and we're all amazed that we managed to defeat it. Except Frichard. He's pretty pissed he didn't get to do battle with us. Which was kind of a dick move. But man, that was amazing.
i have a quick question about multiclassing and multiple hits
if a character has enough levels to have multiple hits per round and then takes a level of a different class is it counted towards the highest or lowest one, or is it another attack entirely?

Both. It adds to both attacks, and set intervals (+6/+11/+16) are when you get new attacks.

you add the base attack bonus of the classes, once you get enough base attack bonus you get multiple attacks per round. if you have enough for two attacks and take another class i believe it adds to both because it is just a bonus to base attack? could be wrong and it just adds to highest but i am almost positive that it isn't the lowest one or another attack entirely

i think that's the best explanation thanks.
it's a really hard to make rules for subject so i'll go with this for now
So my friend Zombii is DMing a game of Mistborn Adventure Game, with myself and a dude called Burning Grey as players. We're looking for another player, preferably with a United States time zone, who has a flexible schedule, since we don't have a set time for our sessions.
The Mistborn Adventure Game is based off a series of books by Brandon Sanderson set on the world of Scadrial. It's primarily narrative and role-play based, with less of an emphasis on dice rolling and mechanics. The world is on the dark / grim side, and one of the major points of the world is its three magic systems, which are all based on metals and alloys of metals. If you haven't read the books it doesn't really matter, but the world is so damn compelling that if you play with us you'll definitely want to read the books. PM Zombii or myself if you're interested.
Alright, I've been playing Pathfinder for a while now, and I've decided it's time for a major investment.
During easter I will be in America, where I'm going to spend 250 dollars on books. It's gonna be a heavy load, but it will be sooooo worth it. It's, like, a third of the price over there, it's nuts!
