Honestly, I think I might just wait for D&D Next.
I'd recommend getting a feel for 3.5e (and, by extension, Pathfinder since the two are pretty much similar) before 5e comes out. 3.5e (and PF) are still very popular amongst the DnD crowd, and it'll take a while for fans of it to switch to 5e within the first couple weeks or so.
5th Edition, announced some time in January.
Now you dont even need to roleplay, you draw a card from a deck and your character do what it is in there
Lets do this to dice rolls aswell!

I've learned not to trust fans of anything anymore.
We were giving the DM hell Friday because he gave himself gold armor, even though his character is supposed to be a dumb, mute Minotaur orphan. At one point, everyone gets captured besides me and our Pixie warlock. He ends up taking the armor for himself out of the confiscated weapons chest, and the DM ends up whining the whole time afterwords until our Sorcerer melts it so he shuts up.
Also, Drow Assassin is so much fun.

Reminds me of the time an old DM of mine had a super duper mondo overpowered character (dealing 20 D20 Damages + all this poison and fire damage and shit) who could do anything.
Anything, that is, except not fall into a gaping hole in which there was a bag of holding. He falls in, we grab the bag, and throw his overpowered ass into a rope trick.
SINGULARITIES BE DAMNED, THAT BOY IS DEAD

The fact he had a DMPC in the first place is a bad sign.
Hmmmm, apparently I can buy that sword

Actually, WotC is taking a completely different route. They're looking to the fanbase to sift through some of the best rules and build the new edition off of that.
Considering how much I see 4e getting panned, I don't think we have to worry about cards anymore.

Not really. If I run a campaign with only three players I always make a DM-run PC who never contributes in any significant way outside combat. (And if he does need to, I let the rest of the party make up his mind then roll whatever skills he'd need to use myself.)
Although in that campaign it was an issue since the DM apparently wanted to have an ungodly character...
Is there any details on the 5th edition anyways? Now that you said that I might be interested

Best way to handle a DMPC in my experience is to make it a golem that somehow get's bound to one of the PC's.

Make it an incorporeal who whispers deviant thoughts to the PCs (in the form of folded up notes to the players).

I always just make a generic ranger. Flexible for combat, easy to run, and doesn't need to do too much outside that. (And the people I play with tend to be lacking in tracking skills so my pc makes up for that but otherwise, yeah.)
Hmm... I wonder, do you think it's possible to turn some pre-written modules into CYOA-type single-player D&D campaigns? Maybe have some of the random factors solidified in separate books or back pages? Or maybe make them into ye-olde-style text based/limited GUI computer games. Wasn't there a CYOA spinoff series of D&D? Was that a spinoff following the rules or just the settings?
I've actually got a few CYOA books around here...

Just do what I do.
Get the "story" (i.e. Kill the dragon), the "checkpoints" (i.e. collect the Sword of Dragonrape +3, find lair, fuck the dragon up) and whatever happens in between you take from the book, or if your players don't follow what the book does (i.e. They destroy the key items), you stick a thumb up your ass and make shit up.

Oh wait, Singleplayer.
Nevermind, I'll find that text-based Adventurer gamebuilder you'll need.

So, whenever you need shit done and the PCs ain't doing it, you send in Boromir?

Thing is, with a golem, there's a built in reason for it not doing shit out of combat.
What's the difference between a DMPC and a Henchman?
What's the difference between a DMPC and a Henchman?
One is played and made by the DM and one is made by the DM or player and played by either a player or DM.

What the hell is inform, a language exclusively for old bad games?
What's the difference between a DMPC and a Henchman?
Henchmen are usually significantly weaker than the PC's, DMPC's are as powerfull, or oftentimes more powerfull than the PC's.
That and henchmen are often, but not always, played by the player whom hired it.
Thing is, with a golem, there's a built in reason for it not doing shit out of combat.
At lower levels though a golem would be kinda over-powered in combat.
GMPCs are PCs created by the GM for several reasons, either:
The GM wants to play with the players
The GM wants to self-insert wish fulfill
The GM needs someone present to try and keep a sense of narrative and structure to the campaign.
Unfortunately, it's most done for the 2nd reason.
Henchmen are NPCs hired or created by a PC, to support their character. Normally a pack-mule, tend to be related to the PC via backstory. They're played by either the GM or the respective NPC. But if played by the GM, they're likely to be kidnapped by the BBEG.
Are there any PocketRPG games going around that could take another player? GMT, I've got a small amount of experience with pen and paper games before but not with PocketRPG.

Maybe ask Aerkhan to join in his.
Wouldn't a list of current and upcoming game sessions be useful to have in the OP?

That's a good idea. As well as their leaders and vacancies if the OP could be arsed.

Well, someone from each of the games would have to update him on all that, which is too much to ask for with all the lazy arseholes such as myself.
Typing in a few words every other week is hard work.
