Chose Half-Elf Mage/Theif because I'm an idiot and games with numbers completely fuck me over and I usually play magic-sneaky types in RPGs.
That might be a little hard to play. I've never been able to play multi-classed characters unless I focus on one class and have the other class supplement my main class. Example: in Baldur's Gate II, I played a Kensai/Thief who focused on boss sneak attacks with some active fighting capabilities. The Kensai is a fighter variant that gives you crazy AC, THAC0, and damage bonuses but doesn't allow for armor, gauntlets, or shields. After classing into a thief and reaching the appropriate level for them to be both effective, I had a character that I could solo the game with due to the Kensai's great attack bonuses and special attacks (Kai gives an automatic critical that stacks with sneak attacks) coupled with the skills of the thief.. Soloing the game is huge amounts of fun, I highly suggest everyone tries it at least once.
Most of the time when I ask or look up advice for an RPG the advice is almost always lrn2minmax, use this strategy over and over again, or kill everyone and steal everything.
Disregard my advice and play how you want to. This isn't me being passive aggressive, by the way. I'm not in any place to tell people how to play games.
Oh man, I looooooove me some D&D. I have a group of about 8 guys who get together and play. right now we have D&D 3.5, Dark Heresy, and All Flesh campaigns going. 5 of us just finished our 3.5, so we merged it with the campaign the other guys had going. While my favorite is probably Dark Heresy, we've had some GREAT moments in All Flesh. We finished our modern day campaign about a month ago, and just recently started a WWII one.

Or something like that...
THAC0 is silly. Don't try and comprehend it.
It's a bit complex and confusing to learn but it's actually pretty accurate. A mage would have a much more difficult time landing a blow against someone with an ac of 0 than a fighter would.
Well 2E is best edition, so wild mages must be best mages, yes?
If 2e is best why is 1eAD&D getting a reprint?! Zing. [sp]Make edition love, not wars--all editions are goods, 1e, 2e, 3.5, pathfinder--none of that fucking 4e shit, that shit is like the FOURTH Indiana Jones.[/sp] [editline]2nd March 2012[/editline] Also thaco isn't difficult, you just roll a number, subtract this and that, and BAM. You have an AC that you hit. It's the exact same as rolling to hit except backwards. Easy.

Or does not growing up with the first 3 make me scum?
I liked Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Or does not growing up with the first 3 make me scum?
Yes. And so does not growing up with this. I wonder if it's possible to adapt Silent Hill into an RPG...

It's all to do with attitude - If you expect a game to suck just because it's a certain edition it WILL suck because you won't bother taking it seriously.

If they had called it something else, i would have had no problem with it, but as it stands, it completely betrays the concepts of Dungeons and Dragons. Although to be fair, 3rd edition did do that as well, but to a much, much lesser magnitude, and quite a few of the changes it made were actually for the better, in my opinion at least.
What the fuck? I've never heard a more ridiculous load of shit in my life. D&D is about how you play not whatever ruleset you play from. It's like playing cricket. You're the player, the rules/edition are your bat and wickets.

Not to say that you don't have a point, but it is only partially true, and your analogy was terrible.
What I'm saying is that the rules are there to facilitate the game more than to be the game itself. You're not even obligated to abide by them, it's down to the DM's discretion of what they consider more fun. D&D can and will be fun no matter what the edition as long as you have a half-decent DM and players who are willing to immerse themselves in the game universe without worrying about which edition or what rules they're using.

For instance, even with an incredible Dungeon Master, and good players, playing F.A.T.A.L. would probably still be a fatal experience for your mind. I love it when suddenly two people are nearly the only ones whom have posted anything in nearly half the page.

The 4e rules are hardly cripplingly bad. I don't see exactly what you think is wrong with them, I think they make combat more interesting with the introduction of powers.
The 4e rules are hardly cripplingly bad. I don't see exactly what you think is wrong with them, I think they make combat more interesting with the introduction of powers.
I can see the merit in giving the more combat oriented classes something similar to spells, but besides the fact that it was already done, and much better i might add, for 3rd edition in the Tome of Battle, there is no need to completely rape the magic system, or the make all the classes, even the ones added in supplements, essentially carbon copies of eachother, or to remove multiclassing for that matter.
Being a magic-user in older editions sucked when you ran out of spells and didn't have opportunity to re-memorise them. I like the idea of having weaker spells that are always available as well as some stronger ones you can only use every now and again. I don't see how all the classes are the same - They all still have their own distinctive playstyles and abilities. Besides, a lot of the time class means bugger all anyway - It all depends on the build you choose to create.

Now every class is a caster for some fucking reason. Powers are not bad but 4e is not DnD.
Fandoms... They're all the same.

Yeah, you just lost all credibility to me man.
Fandoms... They're all the same.
Sure, now go to /tg/ where all this is magnified about one thousand times.
I, er... what? I've played several classes, though, and each one was a distinctly different experience. I think we must have very different playstyles. Here's a little secret for you, and this is not just about Dungeons and Dragons, for you see, every single sequel to anything within the entertainment industry, has to strike at that fine balance between not changing enough, and changing too much, else the fans who buy their products for their (usually) hard earned money, will become angry because one of those very two things you said, and very often rightfully so.
