That means more tales for our archive of "OH GOD WHAT THE FUCK - AND OTHER INCREDIBLE TALES" to save and post here!
Ugh the other day I was playing with a friend who wanted to finally give DMing a shot. Well in my campaigns I like to reward creativity. Of course that's not a rule so I don't EXPECT that.
But the other day I was playing a Half elf Bard who somehow wound up on a pirate ship. As an enemy ship came close, I used acrobatics to jump from my ship to theirs. I noticed they had cannons so I spot checked for gunpowder. My DM gives me a 3/4 filled barrel of gun powder. I then cut off a length of rope, spark my sword against the metal support around the barrel, then kick it down stairs into a group of 30 or so pirates.
ALL OF THAT I ROLLED FOR.
Scumbag DM rolls, gets a 15 and says "The pirates stomp out the flame."
Needless to say, I stopped being creative. Now I just let him railroad me wherever I go.

You must persist. You can't always expect everything to go according to plan, your creativity must overcome.

Well I wound up jumping back to my boat and taking them on one by one before back up arrived. But my only disappointment in that was that I did SO MUCH successful rolling just for it to be cancelled out by one.
I did cool off though cause it was the start of the campaign so I figured it was a forgivable railroad into the start of the campaign. Still though. Being able to sing some tales about the time I killed a bunch of pirates with an explosion would've made for a pretty awesome bard.
Wait, i'm confused, how do you stomp out the flame from a barrel of gunpowder?
The bit of rope I had cut off and fed into the barrel was long enough to give me some time before detonation. So I guess that was what the DM imagined when he had them stomp it out. Kinda like a cartoon :v:
That's kind of silly.
I find that the best way to scare someone shitless is to look them straight in the eye, turn your face away, and then turn back with their face instead of your own. This is why Biomancy is the best school.
New player here with a dumb 4e question:
Is it possible to do a check for the main skills like charisma and strength? If so, how does the main number factor in, like if I have 18 strength with a +4 modifier, and I have to get over 15? Thanks in advance.

Yes, for instance breaking a door down would be a strength check, solving a simple logic problem would be an intelligence check ect. And the modifier (+4), not the total stat (18) would be the thingy you add to the dice.
My first D&D character was a Dwarf. My friends kept throwing me :v:

generally things like that will be your ability modifier + half level (adding half level is generally accepted but as always it's up to the DM)
for the most part your DM will deal with skill/ability check DC, so usually the exact numbers aren't something you should know ahead of time, but there are tables in the books for things like that
Edit:
as a side note, I've seen more than one DM who will give a choice between a straight ability modifier for breaking down a door, or the choice of using an athletics check, so certain DMs will rule things like that differently

Would you rather they toss you off, or just toss you?
what do you guys use to make your characters?
me and my friends use http://www.pathguy.com/cg35.htm and we edit whatever we need to after we print them

That's stupid, everybody knows that it's halflings you're supposed to throw.
Does anyone have a game going on MapTool or something similar I could like watch? I've been watching the Penny Arcade videos and I want to watch to get a better understanding of rules and DMing.

That's the point silly.
That and dwarves are heavy fuckers.
hey guys i'm a newbie GM and I could use some tips on making my world more interesting other than throwing endless combat situations at my group, some interesting down time situation/puzzle
i'm playing dark heresy but heck i figure you guys may be able to help
I always find that a DM who puts great detail into the campaign's story and steadily builds up to the main turning point when doing quests makes it loads more enjoyable
then again, I've never been a DM before but that's what I've found most fun when I play

Do you guys have a Steam group or should I just add you? Thanks for letting me watch :D

Combat can get a little boring after a while, especially in Dark Heresy where either the party is hopelessly overwhelmed or the enemy is laughably outmatched. Right now in my DH group, "Heresy Force 5", I'm running them through a literal warzone and they've seen little but combat for several sessions. As much fun as it is to watch them turn Incarnate Lesser Daemons to ash, I plan to mix it up fairly soon.
Maybe you could throw some investigation or mystery their way? Give them a problem which can't be solved with "more gun" (initially).
- Murder Mystery
- Escort/Delivery Mission
- Moral Dilemma
- Riot/Protest
Just something that will make them think or roleplay is what you should go for.

A good GM does two things, first he builds a world and then he gives the players an end goal. If you build your world your players should have a multitude of ways to get to the end goal, and when your world is built it will allow you to change gears on the fly and allow for any possibility without thorough planning for your players to fuck up. It's more rewarding and more fluid to build the city, with various shops and NPCs residing in it, many of which unused, than it is to build a quest and then the city around it.
In DnD I always make 3 things:
Map of the contintent with loose political boarders and/or map with major cities on it
General Idea of the political landscape
General Layout of the starting city
Remember, your players aren't going to necessarily want to do what you've tried to get them to do, but with this you have a way to satisfy their wanderlust.
If you want some help I generally go to /tg/ and wait for an image dump of cities and landscapes and use those as bases for the world.

Of course, the players may ignore any talky NPCs if they see them as evil and use their guns or broken psyker powers to get past them. I mean, I'd never do that though, that would be silly.

I should certainly hope not. You might miss out on crucial information or a full-page of dialogue that the GM had been writing for days in advance or something. That would be silly.

All of these can be quite easily solved with more gun.
Looking for a starting 3.5e/4e or Pathfinder game. Any one interested or know where else to look other than /tg/?
