Everyone who wants to can get in, once enough people join the steam group we'll vote on Aloha Smoothskin or The Windy City campaign. (The second one is longer and has more content.)
I have joined (trogdor) but right now i am off to take a nap so in case the voting happens while i am asleep just assume i vote for the longer one. [editline]31st July 2012[/editline] i had also planned on being a sniper type character, which i enjoy playing as in the video games. is sneak a useful skill for this or am i better off with outdoorsman? (i kinda assumed i needed small guns sneak and outdoorsman or repair but i don't really know)
and knowing which berries make you shit blood, and which are all right to eat.
I presume this is the same berry.
Well, kinda wandered in here, but a while back, me and some Fallout fans played the Fallout PNP RPG over steam chat, and I want to GM again over steam. Three possible campaigns, New Vegas, The Windy City, and Aloha Smoothskin (Hawaii). If you want basic details on any, just ask, each will have unique weapons, enemy variants, and stories. [editline]30th July 2012[/editline] By unique weapons, I'll explain. In the campaigns, each will have special, themed weapons, in New Vegas, you might find a 'Lawmaker' revolver, or in the Windy City, you may find a Chicago Typewriter (Tommy Gun variant), or in Aloha Smoothskin, a ceremonial obsidian sword from a group of tribal Ghouls (With poison from local fauna available). Enemies would be just as varied, all you'd expect from Fallout New Vegas, Gangsters in Chicago, Tribals in Hawaii (Well, different tribes will be neutral, good, or evil, but piss a good one off, and you may end up as a volcano sacrifice anyways.)
I'd be interested, it seems like a pretty cool concept.
I'd be interested, it seems like a pretty cool concept.
Get in the steam group now, want to get the votes in today for which campaign we're doing.
Get in the steam group now, want to get the votes in today for which campaign we're doing.
I'm in the chat, man.
Well, stay in it, every time you send a message you leave three minutes later.
Well, stay in it, every time you send a message you leave three minutes later.
Yeah, nobody (You) is really saying anything.
How am I supposed to reply if you're not even there?
Nobody happens to have a DnD or some other game in a fantasy setting with a free player slot?
Still searching.
Wait, no this Fallout PnP is made by someone else, I didn't realise there were two... sorry elowin.
Man if you guys really want to play games online you should sign for Something Awful, they have a great PbP section and they're really welcoming to newbies. There's generally 5-6 new games starting up a week in all kinds of formats. 4e games are super popular though but there are plenty of others to experience like GURPS, PDQ or Mutants & Masterminds 3e.

PbP?
PbP?
Play by Post, using forum posts in lieu of meeting up or an online chatroom.
That sounds slow as fuck, how are you supposed to have tense moments?
That sounds slow as fuck, how are you supposed to have tense moments?
You can't, I really don't see how anyone can play like that.
You can't, I really don't see how anyone can play like that.
I can see it working for a game focusing on diplomacy and shit, but would make most campaigns boring.
Get in the steam group chat now, we're planning the Fallout PNP sessions, and voting on the campaign.
Get in the steam group chat now, we're planning the Fallout PNP sessions, and voting on the campaign.
I'm on my phone. Steam Mobile has no group chats
I was going to play a Deathclaw in the Fallout campaign, but then i ended up with 47HP, 40% resistance against bullets, and the ability to attempt three attacks every turn each dealing 3d8+14 damage. So now i'm a cyberdog instead. Fear my 1d10 sonic bark.
Why not play a human?
Going to GM a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay campaign. PM me if you want in. [editline]1st August 2012[/editline] One more player is needed.

I know it's not really on topic, but seeing as most of you here are into tRPGs in general, I'll ask. Does anyone here play Shadowrun? I've been DMing a game of it recently and am interested on seeing how other people have been doing with it.

And as a general rule, any storytime about tRPGs or related things are accepted and appreciated.
I've been thinking of DMing Shadowrun for a while. And as a general rule, any storytime about tRPGs or related things are accepted and appreciated.
I'll tell some of my crazy stories and stuff a little later, but if you are thinking about DMing it, I have some tips. First, know the rulebook. Shadowrun has so many varied mechanics, way more than D&D. You have swords, bows, arrows, charisma, swimming/climbing/etc., and magic, as well as guns, drones, robots, hacking, and two other planes of existence (Matrix and Astral). There are so many different tests to know about, but usually you can approximate by the system they have in place where you take the overarching attribute (Strength, Charisma, Body, Intelligence, etc.) plus the skill (Firearms, Climb, Acrobatics, Cybercombat, Con, etc.) for the dice rolls. Second, encourage your players not to specialize too much. Unless you have a huge, 8-9 person group like me, make sure everyone can do a little combat. We made the mistake of having everyone really good with something, but horrible at everything else, sort of like in real life. Hackers usually aren't able to use firearms real well, but they should be able to in a small group. Players should have some overarching "Major" such as Hacking, Charisma, Magic, Stealth, Drone Rigging, Melee, or Firearms which they are very proficient at, and then a "Minor" in firearms. Because there is no "Class" system, it gets hard for characters to be able to be functional. Thirdly, as a DM, be sure to read the lore. One thing I don't like about Shadowrun is its set-in-stone lore, as I love to make my own worlds and backgrounds. However, all the source material focuses around 2072-ish Earth, with a detailed set of events that happened in the past. You can make your players take part in these events or make some other stuff for them. Fourth, make sure each session has something for everyone. I your group decides to take the "specialist" approach and have characters with no combat experience, make sure there is something for them. Don't just throw a bunch of goons at them, make sure there is something for all players to do. An example of this is infiltrating a science lab: They have to do recon beforehand (Charisma to talk their way in or disguise to investigate, or Drone Rigging to scout out the place with robots), infiltrate the base (Stealth to sneak around guards or Hacking to disarm the security systems), get some special thing from a vault (Hardware Hacking or Software Hacking to crack the vault), and finally deal with security (Melee weapons guy or Firearms to kill them, maybe some offensive Magic). Magic is a nice catch-all that compliments everything. There are spells for influencing people, shooting fireballs, making distractions, or really anything. Fifth, vary things. Don't make the mistake I made early on and make everything a crash and grab mission. Make missions different and interesting, while still letting all players do stuff. This is difficult, but after a while of experiencing the game and reading materials for the game, you should have plenty of ideas. Sixth and finally, make sure the players are role-playing. My campaign was torn apart for a little simply because there was no role-playing. I fixed this by having an in-game interviewer come in for an anonymous interview. During this time, all the players had to stay in-character and answer the questions the interviewer had. This had the characters making fun of each other, yelling at each other for stupid things, bonding because of familiar hobbies, and characters generally fleshing out their backgrounds. I made a transcript of the entire interview (WARNING: Profanity. Certain people in my group aren't exactly the most mature.), and I'll use certain things in future sessions such as Javen's dad being a past engineer.
Thirdly, as a DM, be sure to read the lore. One thing I don't like about Shadowrun is its set-in-stone lore, as I love to make my own worlds and backgrounds.
Shadowrun is the most popular Cyberpunk RPG because of the strength the lore lends to the game, much like how D&D used to draw strength from a number of very specific settings. Of course now all those beloved settings have become watered down poop-juice but the old stuff is still around and it is still good. Your tips are good though, I just don't agree with how you belittle the fluff. [editline]1st August 2012[/editline] Also yeah, having a group that role-plays is the only way you'll be able to DM consistently. If your party is just a murder and loot type then you'll become a very bored computer and you certainly won't open the pod bay doors.
