And don't think about buying any proper headwear for your character, either. Those are spread into even more splatbooks.

AND THAT'S WHY I'M HAVING A HARD TIME RESISTING. AUGH!
Should I get the Red Box for 4e, or see if I can find some 3.5 books? I'm a beginner, and I've only ever played Fallout PnP and 4e, but I heard that 3.5e is better. [editline]1st October 2012[/editline] Just to start a simple campaign, I mean.

[editline]1st October 2012[/editline] Just to start a simple campaign, I mean.
I would recommend 4e over 3 or 3.5e. As to books, I'm just gonna quote SA here since they can say it much better than I can.
Okay, I want to play D&D, how do I get started? You can get started for free! No joke, you really can. All you need is a few friends and the quick start rules and adventure found here! You can run your first one or two sessions and try out the game without any outlay. Mind you, the depths of D&D go much further than this... I want to buy books. What the hell should I buy? Well, Fourth Edition is split into two mutually-compatible divisions: Regular and Essentials. Essentials seems to be the current route that Wizards is taking with D&D. If you're new to D&D, start here and try the Essentials line. Buy Heroes of the Fallen Lands, Rules Compendium, and Monster Vault. On Amazon, that's just $46.93 and free shipping! It'd be $70 if you want to support your FLGS (and please do, if you have a good one in town!) If you've played D&D before, you might be tempted to grab the PHB/DMG/MM. Be advised, though, that these books have a lot of errata. The original Monster Manual, in particular, is pretty suspect as far as monster design goes. You can't really go wrong buying them, though (we started with them, and we love this game!), it's just something you'll want to know. Get the errata, and go to it! If the idea of picking up a bunch of books at $20-30 a pop is distasteful, here's another way. Buy a Rules Compendium and a subscription to D&D Insider. This gives you access to literally EVERYTHING Fourth Edition, and for less than $25 up-front. You can use the character builder to make all of your characters, and the compendium will give you access to all monsters (or, alternately, this will). All you need to do is make your own maps and tokens (or buy the DM's kit). Let me reiterate: Everything "Fourth Edition" is compatible. In fact, the Rules Compendium and Monster Vault are highly recommended no matter what sort of campaign you run. You can't really buy the "wrong books." What else is there? D&D Insider is probably the best $6-10 a month you could spend on 4E, and you can split it with your friends. It used to be BETTER, but Wizards has made it an all-online tool that is...clunky at best. Insider is made up of the Character Builder, Compendium, and Adventure Tools, in addition to access to Dragon magazine and rules updates.
If anyone is starting anything or needs another player, send me a message on steam or something. I'm -5 GMT with plenty of openings.
Tomb of Horrors is the perfect starting adventure for first level PCs who have never played before.
Totally. If you're the Spoony One and you like killing PCs.
Totally. If you're the Spoony One and you like killing PCs.
Spoony ain't no killer GM.
Spoony ain't no killer GM.
He's got that reputation though, true or not, and half of his stories are about him kiiiinda unfairly killing his PCs.
There's a guy in a friend of mine's group playing a warforged bard, named "Otto Tyun". [sp]auto tune[/sp]
ugh my runepriest is so fun first of all, I can attack with reach because polearm secondly I buff the hell out of allies and debuff the hell out of enemies good thing i'm good friends with the DM because I'm making the game rather challenging for him
He's got that reputation though, true or not, and half of his stories are about him kiiiinda unfairly killing his PCs.
Because those are the funny ones or best examples of players doing things wrong.
Wow. I didn't even know this thread existed! I'm glad I found it! Well I hate to ask you guys for advice right off the bat, but I'm having a major problem with one of the people I'm DM'ing for. This guy thinks he is a major badass and almost gets his party killed all the time. He charges head first into any challenge and during parts to seek information he either kills the informant or knocks them out and causes the town to start a mob to kick him out. So far I've let it slide a little. To coop for the lack of healers in the party(Which they need an army of clerics!) I asked one of my good buddies who is a vet to D&D play a healer and advice the trouble maker. It has barely worked as I hoped, he still tries to beat everyone up and almost got smited by 5 different gods(I'm a generous DM). So I was wondering how should I punish him coming up in the next session to wipe him in line? P.S. We are playing 1e and 2e. He also is a monk that is lvl 6 with barely any connection with his Deity or his order. P.S. P.S. He has also killed two of his allies so far.
you're probably best off talking to him out of the game and if he doesn't change see if people want to kick him out
I'd tell him to get the fuck out of the game if he's shitting things up on the rest of you for shits and giggles. Some retards don't understand that they're not the only player.
Honestly, kill his character.
He doesn't understand the monk way, make one or more members of his order come by, see what he's doing, and proceed to get him kicked out of the order.

Either kill him off or take him aside and tell him he either gets with the program or be removed from the game. No excuses and no compromises; he gets with it or he leaves. Unless your other players are ok with him behaving like that. Can't imagine any would be though.
You're playing 1e? Poison. Poison everywhere.
you could do what our group did. One of the dudes that left was sleeping in an old miningcart that we dragged along with us, and we forgot about him. Later we were entering a huge ship filled with people, and just to make the line shorter for us I pushed the cart down the hill into some people to distract them. well it hits the ship, flips over, and sinks to the bottom. Then I realized our sorc is still in there. no one had dinner that night
I think I'm going to use elowin's idea. His order is much much MUCH more powerful then him. I'll have the leader come over and kill him. lvl 6 monk vs lvl17 monk/ lvl30 magic-user That will be funny. Everyone in the party will laugh and I'll still kick his ass out unless he changes his ways. [editline]4th October 2012[/editline] Thank you guys for the help.
Sent you an invite
Thanks, added you to the group! Our session is full now, though. Sorry to anyone we're excluding!

We had stopped at a town in our journey and long-story-short the town was raided and set afire. The whole time the ass had been asleep in our wagon (the player was consistently not around for such a length of time we continued to play without him), so we just kinda fled town without the wagon -- we left it in a burning stable to be sure of course. Never did figure out what happened to him though.
Pfft, that's nothing, my old party killed a beholder at 5th level. While half of them were naked.
I remember that. Me and the wizard dude were the only ones doing actual damage. Oh and dont forget the whole Trex eating lich thing.
