They released a pre-made adventure, Reclaiming Blingdenstone, which offers a nice mix of puzzle solving, roleplaying/social interactions, and pure combat.
Isn't Blingdenstone the svirfneblin city near Menzoberranzan in R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books?
Christ, names in the underdark are such a mouthful
Ugh Finally found a small D&D Encounter game where I live, but they only do it on Wednesdays at 6pm, and I work during that time. Shit sucks. Really want to get back into playing again. Just got moved to full time, and now my schedule isn't as sporadic as it was when I was part time.
lmao almost died during my last game we failed a stealth check so bad that we took on 4 encounters worth of monsters. i spent the latter half of that encounter making saving throws
My friend who I have been playing 4e with bought pathfinder and we are having a game on sunday. It's gonna be the first time in a long while I have played an actual PC rather than dm'ing or assisting the dm. Should be good.
Starting a CoC campaign once I get the books and understand the rules. Any tips for a CoC GM?

I can't really see the fun in CoC unless some of the players or everyone is playing dirty.
I can't really see the fun in CoC unless some of the players or everyone is playing dirty.
That's because it's not, horror PnP games don't work very well.
As long as you're genre savvy, CoC can be a lot of fun.
The horrible evil monster that is Disco has infected me with a terrible craving to play me some Neverwinter Nights, would any of you chums like to join me in playing it sometime this weekend?

Okay, this is possibly my favorite D&D moment yet: We're playing a modern campaign, based off of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., right? Our party of three is heading into one of the main towns, but before we get there, we get ambushed by about 15 dogs. The town has a trench specifically for the purpose of trapping the dogs, but we decided to stay and fight for shits and giggles. We kill 14 of them, but one started to flee. Two of us (Tyler and I, because this part is important) just walk away, but Frankie gets pissed off and starts firing at the dog. He misses five times in a row, getting even angrier, but reluctantly goes with us into the town. The guards at the town wall/trench were kind of confused, but hey, we fought and basically won. We head into the bar to rest and to see if there's any jobs worth taking. The DM describes the scene, and mentions two things that are important to this specific story: a table with two loners, and a shady guy in a corner. Frankie IMMEDIATELY goes over to the loner table, and points at one of them. "Hey. You got a gun?" "What?" "You got a gun?" "Y-yeah, I have a gun, why?" "What gun? Lemme see it." "What? Why?" "What gun?" The guy opens his trench coat, it's a generic SMG. "I have seen that piece of shit break SO MUCH! You know what you need? A beautiful sawed-off shotgun!" "What? No, I don't want that." "Come on, man, I know you want it." "No, really, I don't want it, I don't have the money." "Oh, come on!" Frankie then walks over to the shady guy, who I was going to talk to as well. I initiate the conversation with the shady guy. "Hey." "Hey, whaddya need?" "What do you have?" "I sell information. Anything you need to know, I got it." Frankie interjects. At this point, Tyler leaves and starts drinking outside of the bar. "Hey, how much would it cost for you to knife that guy over there?" "What? No, I won't do that." "You know where anyone sells poison?" "What?" "You got any poison?" "No, man, what? No." Frankie then attempts to punch the guy in the face, but I restrain him. Frankie pushes me down in a fit of rage. I react in the only appropriate manner: pulling out my shotgun and shooting Frankie in the gut. Frankie's in shock, people are FREAKING THE FUCK OUT. Frankie manages to come out of shock, then crawls over to the guy he originally went for, then shoots him. He then tries to shoot himself, but the gun jams. Turn goes back to me, and I shoot myself with my remaining shot in my gun. Tyler then decides to walk in, goes up to the barman, and asks him what the fuck happened. Tyler mentions in passing that he knew us, and the security guards immediately detain him. Frankie gets up again and fires two shots at Tyler, but only one connects, barely grazing him, and the security guards return fire and kill Frankie. So, overall, we walk into a peaceful town and end up with two dead and one in prison, all because of a fucking dog. We were all laughing hysterically the entire time, and my sides still hurt from it all. God damn.
Okay, this is possibly my favorite D&D moment yet:
What the fuck man. Funny story and all, but why did his character get so mad to warrant killing his party members?
This is a story all about how I played DND for the first time, and failed. Our tale starts in a small town, I head for a general store.
zarjk: >The other three are talking to the local priest about a group of evil elfs who were raiding the trading caravans. zarjk: >I'm in the general store, picking up Salted Meat and a cog. zarjk: >Cog comes in handy later. zarjk: >We all meet up and head out. zarjk: >After some talking we find the elfs. zarjk: >Our ranger fires lit arrows into the woods. zarjk: >Woods are blazing. zarjk: >Elfs come out to throw water on it. zarjk: >We head into the woods, there's a small clearing about the size of a hotel room. zarjk: >In the clearing there is three elfs, the ringleader and two lackeys. zarjk: >I am a bard, so I figure I would just go head in. zarjk: >I jam my flute into a cog along with my sword. zarjk: >Hoping it makes a two handed weapon, I am suprised. zarjk: >I roll a one, critical failure. zarjk: >Sword flys across clearing zarjk: >Group is looking at me like WTF. zarjk: >Flute is broke zarjk: >I'm in shit tons of trouble. zarjk: >Elf comes at me. zarjk: >ELF rolls TWENTY. zarjk: >He chops off my fucking dick. zarjk: >Group laughing. zarjk: >I'm chuckling. zarjk: >Looks like it's time for a dildo.

I can't really see the fun in CoC unless some of the players or everyone is playing dirty.
Call of Cthulhu is less about winning and more about building the horror atmosphere and going insane and/or dying horribly. If the GM is feeling generous, the players might feel as if their demise made a small difference in the world. That's how it was for my group at least.
What, is CoC really that bad? I thought it sounded really interesting, and I heard a lot of good things about it.
What, is CoC really that bad? I thought it sounded really interesting, and I heard a lot of good things about it.
I just dislike Lovecraftian stuff in general. It's not the scary monsters and actual recognisable horror stuff, it's just the ~*~*7noneuciludean3u*~*~. Also, I dislike the utter and complete futility of it all, usually games or stories that have an element of powerlessness have some other sort of victory to be gained. In CoC it's like "you saw a thing becuase you were playing the game sensibly and it was a bad thing so you go insane, isn't that rewarding?". Also it's always a cult trying to bring Ctulu out of his slumber.
There are some other baddies they sometimes try to awaken or summon.
And the difference between them is zilch really because as soon as any one of them appear it's game over, man.
Joining a 4th Ed. game with a bunch of people off of a fetish website, will report back with horror stories as they happen.
First session got postponed, but I rolled up a halfing rogue with multiclass feats into bard because dex and cha are the best stats. The rest of the party I know of so far are a fairy monk, a shark warforged barbarian, a delusional schizophrenic warlock and a dragon born that's threatened to sit on my halfling.

As for the "powerlessness," many powerful beings' plans on earth hinge on little details that have got to be right or nothing works. The ritual to wake cthulhu has to be at the exact right moment, etc. I don't know if you've ever actually played it, but a good Keeper can make you feel like you changed something before shit got really bad. And it's not always a cult trying to raise cthulhu. Have you even read the list of creatures and deities?
I'm thinking of making a Corvo Attono character for DnD, probably 3.5 what class do you think it should be?
I'm thinking of making a Corvo Attono character for DnD, probably 3.5 what class do you think it should be?
Super-stealthy rogue, of course.
I'd imagine some kind of Psionic Rogue would be my best bet, any classes that are like that, or would I need to multiclass
