In general you will be fine as long as you both are the same tier, but there are special exceptions for most light tanks of tier 4 and higher.
Check out the wiki page for a good explanation on how matchmaking works. It's very good to keep in mind when you platoon with friends.

They are not changing the matchmaking of the german lights, at least, not for the worse. The long term plan is to get rid of the weird MM where Tier 5 lights get worse MM spread than Tire 6 lights due to the historical level cap. Tier 5 goes up to Tier 12 matches, Tier 6 goes up to Tier 10 matches.
Only change we can expect to see is change in purchase price and XP.

Lakeville, tier 5 match
A m37 snaps, blows away two dudes and goes blue. He gets killed. It's -3<0 and we haven't seen the enemy. He says he did it because "They were just sitting there"
Despite this half the team is still jerking off in base. One guy overlooks valley. Me and two others are in village.
Suddenly a blip appears in valley. Then another, and another! Oh my god, it's a valley rush! That's okay, everyone's in base to stop them!

We cried for them to stop, going west from the village. Five of them keep going. Two of them stop [I]completely[/I] and sit there as they die from middle snipers. One churchill I does circles around the corpses as shots bounce off him, then his pubretard mind decides "OH NO I MUST SEEK COVER" and continues to run into the village.
So the poor fellow overlooking valley was destroyed by 10 tanks. It's me, two or three other guys running back to stop valley rush while the entire team retarded chickenshit team with their heads cut off run to village, away from the cap.
Guess who won.

I'd say the superP. It has amazing armor and an average gun if you know how to use it. SU has good alpha damage but the armor is similar to the T25AT, with slightly better sloping. (My jumbo using the 76mm could pen it easily) Mobility wise the SU wins, but play the SuperP like a heavy, because honestly it is one.

T26E4 makes more money on average and has incredibly trolly armor in the front, but it's slow and has a somewhat piddly gun for the tier it's in. It also gets special matchmaking which allows it to only see tier eight and nine matches.
What I've heard of the SU-122-44 is:
It makes a bit less than the SP but in general is a very solid TD for the tier.
It has a very good gun and a lot of mobility for a TD and can occasionally bounce shots off the slope in the front.
It doesn't get any preferential matchmaking, you'll see tier 9 matches in it.
