If you angle it and don't run it open fire, yes. The one thing I see enemy KV-1 drivers doing is attempting to go into the open which completely negates the strength of the armour at the tier. KV-1S drivers do it too with their speed and their armour is not very good at all.

Oh my god. Tier 7 game, in my T29, a T28 (T4) manages to not only penetrate, but sets my engine on fire, does 543 damage and knocks out 4 systems in a single shot. I swear this tank is cursed.

what? T29 is a great tank? Only really rivaled by the Tiger P and KV-1S. Also the russian T28 has a dash (T-28).

I might sell my T29. It's virtually impossible for me to win in it, I don't understand what hell I'm doing wrong. I go into hull down in anyway possible but the heavies around me that rely on other forms on protection eventually die and I just end up getting rushed to the point where the hulldown is useless. Happens pretty much every game.
My eff in it is somehow good though, and the hit rate is fairly good, so I don't think it's my combat skills. The M6 is so much more fun than this tank I find.
I need your advice and perhaps not your judgement of my playing here.

T29 is an assault tank, its armor is really good for a T7 heavy. If you're in a T7 match, just say fuck you to everything and blast through the enemies lines. Your only real enemy is gold shells.
The friend of mine who shows great promise has gotten his first Tier 6 in the form of an Easy 8. He's loving the fuck out of it so far, and he's rapidly catching up to me in eff. rating despite me having 3K more battles than him.

T29 is a Fire Support tank, shit is designed to park it's hull behind something solid and shoot tanks from as far away as possible, hull down there is very little enemy tanks can do about you even tier 9 tanks can't really do anything to you if all they see is your turret.

Whenever I played in my buddies T29, I always did better if I spear headed an assault, rather than going hull down. Yeah, it has the classic bunker turret, but its frontal armor is pretty damn tough to get through, and its gun is pretty wicked, even against T8's.

It works as both really, depending on the game you are in.
If you are in a tier 8-9 game its much better as fire support like you said.
But in a tier 7 game, tier 6s have a lot of trouble getting through even your hull armor. Hell, you can bounce other tier 7s shots pretty easily too if you angle your hull a bit

and this is to be expected, [I]Because:[/I] the T29,34,30, M103 and Conqueror were designed as huge ass defensive gun platforms providing long range support and were not meant to be at the front of anything.

In a T7 match, I'd rather use the T29 as an assault tank rather than a defensive one, but like timebomb said, they do make good hull down tanks in T8+ matches ever since the ears don't take damage anymore, and penning the front of an IS3 in a T7 is always fun.
