You don't go spearheading an offensive, you either stick yourself behind others and pick off from afar or hide yourself in a bush and let the enemies come to you to get the first strike.
I don't know if this has been already answered somewhere but what are the best mods to get for WoT?

god playing low-tiers has reawakened my burning rage of artillery
at high-tiers it's annoying enough but usually it just tracks you and it's an inconvenience, in anything under tier 5 it just either completely disables you or flatout kills you, who thought this was a good idea?

On the right side, it's 50% of the frontal part of the side, and on the left side it's in the middle. You were shooting the backside mostly.
