You can do BETTER with them.

For example, you peak round a corner and see three tanks, only one facing you. It shoots and tracks you in open view of all three tanks. You will die when the other two tanks turn to face you and or the arty zooms in.
Repair your tracks and get back in cover with full health or take the hits/die ? Or repair and reverse with full health to wait for support ?
As I said, at Tier 5 + most guns only need to hit one more time to have paid for the consumable at full price. At very high tiers, taking one more hit will cost more in repair costs than a consumable costs. If you load up at discount time it doesn't even compare.
Not using consumables is a false economy. (not using repair kit for the ammo rack on T8/9 Brits would also be very frustrating. I think they must have the ammo on the outside).

fairly big
I have a lot more fun in the BT-7 / M3 even though the gun is about 60% as effective as the Chi-Ha's because it can into speed, it can into turn, it can into accuracy and it has a fairly thin frontal profile.
If the gun was everything the IS8 wouldnt be so shitty. I dont think Chi Ha is any different. One player doing well with it doesnt constitute it being a great tank.

it's no T-50 but at around 40-50km/h on things like a lone KV-1 it gets the job done without losing all its speed in the type of tank that goes up in flames if hit a handful of times anyway
the M5A1 on the chinese tree is just an absolute funbag with APCR though

it's not shitty in the hands of people who know how to play, but if it's being driven by your average pubbie it becomes really easy to kill as it has no armor whatsoever, much easier than for example an E-75 being driven by a pubbie.

Its a tier 9 that i can pen easily in my super pershing with 170 avg pen reliably. The is3 is a more difficult target to fight then the IS8 which may be User error but when the only thing on the IS8 that really seems like its worth a shit is the gun i dont really think its all that great of a tank. Just my opinion.
Don't know why, but I always see pubbies shooting HE's with the IS-8's 122 super cannon.
