fuck, i'm learning mandarin because it's cooler than jappernees. but i might switch to jap because as you said, it's not as fuckhard as mandarin
I really want to start learning Japanese because it seems like such an awesome language. I eventually want to go to Japan (not for the otaku anime crap, although that IS a bonus) for the sights and different culture and different foods :).

Mandarin is more useful since there are over a billion more Chinese than Japanese
Helps in learning kanji too, although there are some differences

Honestly learning Japanese pronunciation is piss easy and shouldn't take more than a few days for any English speaker to get used to, even if you've never heard of Japan
Long vowels are usually indicated in text instead of implied like in English and spelled with double Latin characters in romaji
It's less of what unique sounds do they have and more of what sounds don't they have
