What is Love Despite, is it essentially the same setup?
Almost the same, yeah.
Here's the web: http://www.love-despite.com/spotlight/
Actually, there's way better VN's out there, KS wasn't a one of a kind amazing VN. If you really want to read more, way better VNs, you should hop by the VN megathread, people will be glad to show you some way better ones than KS.
Retail VNs tend to have horrible endings though
Retail VNs tend to have horrible endings though
That really depends on the VN, there's so much good VN's that it would be stupid to say that they ALL tend to have horrible endings. While I haven't read that much VN's myself (maybe 4 or 5 inculding KS, with 1 of them being MGQ for shits and giggles), they all had great endings. KS really doesn't stand out that much from the VN crowd in terms of quality. It's a good first VN, but to say there's nothing like it is just wrong.

Yeah that's why I didn't say that
Yeah that's why I didn't say that
Still, that means you're probably not playing the real good VN's. If a VN has a terrible ending it's usually not considered good by the rest of the people who've read it. All I'm saying is that there's VN's that easily trump KS in quality and that people should also try things other than KS, because right now a lot of people seem to think that KS is the best thing out there and that it's not worth playing other VN's, even though in reality KS isn't even that amazing and these people are just missing out on the better stuff.
What are the "real good VNs" then

There are definitely better VNs out there, but KS is definitely amazing. Not the best VN ofc, but definitely one to remember.

If only because of its subject matter and the way it goes about it.
If only because of its subject matter and the way it goes about it.
True, it is because of the subject matter but that doesn't make it any less amazing :)

Steins;Gate is definitely one that towers miles above KS in terms of story, and Saya no Uta is a great horror story with an amazing atmosphere and satisfying endings. As for other romantic VNs, I've heard Clannad is amazing, but I personally can't say I have any experience with this kind of VNs other than KS. As I've said before, if you go the the Visual Novel Megathread, people (who've read more VNs than I have) will gladly show you some great Visual Novels that they themselves have experience with. It even has a list of recommendations in the OP.

Steins;Gate has a pretty good ending
You have to use a incredibly loose definition of satisfying if you claim that Saya no Uta has satisfying endings though

It has great endings, but in the end it all boils down to preference. I was just making a point that KS isn't the best VN on the market and that people should try some even better ones if they enjoyed this one.
The thing about Katawa Shoujo is that, due to it's content and broken bird syndrome, it tends to relate to the insecurities or weaknesses of the reader. People who don't have these don't enjoy the experience as someone who can constantly relate to the characters. You would all agree themes such as depression, indecision and ethics run thoughout the whole thing. KS is a more unique experience BECAUSE it tends to strike different chords with different people. Deeply ingrained experiences can turn a terrible arc, like Shizune's into something infinitley more relatable and more likely to pull your heartstrings. Although Shizune's arc is weird because it deals more with Misha and her problems then Shizunes. It's weird as fuck man.

Even when this is the case, it doesn't change the fact that KS is not the best thing ever, and there's other VNs that deal with personal problems as well. Most people seem to like KS such a great deal because it's their first VN and they aren't used to the medium. Once you read other, better VNs you'll quickly see that KS isn't as amazing as you thought when you finished reading it.

The writing of KS is subpar, however the characters and setting are brilliant.
Fuck me. Just finished Lilly's arc. Took me a while to get through all the stories. [sp] Really, really happy ending. I liked it. At the airport I was kinda sure that Hisao would kick it or something, but the end with grassy fields and what not....dem heartstrings. [/sp]
I can't fap after something that beautiful. I think I'll just go to sleep.

That reminds me, I remember a poll of sorts being made after KS, one of the questions being if you've suffered from any of numerous things. One of the highest votes went to 'reduced masturbation' and it sounds fucking dumb until you actually finish an arc you connect with.
She's the perfect daughter, really. Kind hearted, well mannered, and a sweet voice to top it off.
"Ready to go, sweety?" I ask. I can here her excitingly get up from the couch, and hurry to the door.
"Yes, I've been ready! What's been taking you!" she replies.
Sorry, I had to take...some medicine." I replied. Ugh, my medicine. Ever since the doctor told me the news, it's just been so hard. So everyday, I make sure to take it.
We leave the house, and take a walk. It's a beautiful, spring day. Birds chirping, the sun shining a luke warmth, and a slight breeze. Perfect.
"So, what are we going to do today?!" my daughter asks.
"Hmmm, well how about we go to the store first, get something to snack on, then head to the park?" I reply.
"Yippe! I know exactly what to get!"
Oh, my daughter. The kind heartedness of her mother, and the cluelessness of her father. An odd combination, yet adorable, as some call her.
After the store, she gets a beverage which is unfamiliar to me, and what I assume a candy for herself.
"This says it's tea!" she says. "This is Mommy's favorite, right?!"
"Yes dear," I reply. "Mommy loves tea very much."
We arrive at the park, and sit. We enjoy the environment. The sun's mild warmth mixed with the sweet aroma of fresh blooming flowers, along with the scent of the near by trees.
"Hehehehe!" she laughs. I can tell she's having fun. She loves the park so much, that taking her brightens my day so much, that I forget about my medicine at times.
Time passes by, the sun has started to cool down, and I can tell it's time to go home.
"Alright sweetheart, it's time to go home!"
"Awwwww," she says. "Well alright, I had fun though, thanks!"
We arrive home, and I close the door. I feel for the switch, and turn the lights on for the house.
"Alright sweet heart, get the bath ready. I'll be in after my medicine," I tell her.
"Okay!" she says. "...But, Mommy. Can you just skip your medicine. For tonight, please?"
"I can't, darling. I need to take it. Ever since the doctor told me the news." I tell her this trying to hold back the tears.
"Mommy, why are you sad?"
"I'm not sad, just very tired." I fake a smile. "Now, go get that bath ready! Or else, you'll be so dirty, you'll have to bathe twice!"
"No!!! I'll go now, Mommy!"
Her feet rush to the bathroom, and I hear the water run.
I hear a beep coming from the house phone. A message.
"L-Lilly. I don't work t-tomorrow. I can watch your d-daughter."
Hanako usually comes by, but she's been busy lately, so I have been watching my daughter more often.
It's been 5 years, and it still hurts. I can still hear the news that the doctor told me.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Nakai, but your husband did not make it. This heart attack, along with his previous history of arrhythmia was a deadly combination."
Ever since then, I've needed medicine.
"80 Proof. 40% alcohol" reads the label. I take another swig. It tastes bitter, and salty combined with my tears. Every day that passes, people say it should get easier. But to me, it's not easier. I miss him, I need him, I love him.
I head to the bath, and join my daughter.
"Mommy, why are your eyes red? Were you crying?" she asks.
"No no dear, Mommy is just tired, remember? Now then, let's get clean!"
Everyday, it becomes easier to understand that the person that I love will no longer be joining us. Yet, everyday it becomes even clearer that the person that we made, makes it harder to accept that fact that he will never return.
I love you, Hisao.
Fuck.
Is it the fact I haven't slept or did that make no sense? I'm thinking the former.
Is it the fact I haven't slept or did that make no sense? I'm thinking the former.
I say the former.
Damnit.
I say the former.
Good. I'll read it at a later date. When I am better rested.
I've got another sad 'fanfic' but I find the setup a little too unrealistic, even when considering the principal character so I'm not sure if I should post it.

Got done with my second attempt at an 'on the fly' playthrough.
Not only did I end up with Hanako but I also got her good ending.
Maximum feels.

On the fly? You mean like do it without a guide?
Well, I'm one of those dumb fucks who did shit the wrong way around.
As in, I'm doing a playthrough according to my choices last.
Which is cool because I couldn't remember shit from my Hanako arc anyway.

Wow I did the same thing.
Only issue is that you can pretty much tell which answer is wrong because the choices you already made are checked.

Nothing that installing it on, say, a laptop won't fix.
