The massive amounts of drama and Misha's death suck, but Shizune was definitely a more likable person in it, she's much more playful and actually shows that she likes Hisao. If you were to take Shizune's person from the alpha, and keep the route less dramatised (like the release) then she probably wouldn't be seen as the worst path.
I did like that Shizune's alpha route was actually [I]about Shizune[/I] at some points, unlike the final route which is about a whole gang of side-characters-and-also-Shizune-but-mostly-Misha-and-Jigoro.
Then again, Hisao shows of his mastery of romance in it several times he managed to floor Shizune like 3 times within Act 2 and 3, including shoving her against a wall when she knocks on his door and knocking her over when she tries to hug him. :v:
She also doesn't believe in 4th walls:

Then again, with Misha dead, the good ending is still pretty horrible.
His mastery of romance also ends up [sp]getting her killed[/sp] if he hasn't learned too much about her by that point but that's really more her fault than his.

Kenji's ending depressed me a lot because a) I was having a bad day that day and b) I used to have a lot of trouble making friends with girls and ending up with guys who are much more boring company :c

Well, good on you for trying, Hisao definitely manages to be a really dislikeable character, so I see where you're coming from. He lightens up a bit on most of the routes, but he's really irritating for act one with his whole "woe is me it's all shit" attitude.
I just read Shizune's beta route and I think I can safely say I have no further desire to see the old WIP's of things I love ever again. Jesus Christ.

I believe the theme of the prologue and most of act 1 is set up like that in order to create a contrast with later scenes. Good on you for trying though.

I agree, mostly because they have the right balance of drama, romance, and a light touch of eroge. where it doesn't feel like it overdone in any aspect except a shitty main character who can't think straight.
