You run a little, and your body gets used to it, allowing you to run more. I guess a better example for this case would be building up a tolerance for poison.

The first weeks worth of strength/stamina increase you get by going from no exercise to regular exercise is massive. As your stamina increases your heart rate as well as blood pressure will generally decrease. This is the precise reason Nurse wants Hisao to exercise.
