where the lighting comes from the source (sun), and changes angle as the sun travels through the sky, I believe.
I think it'd work fine as long as it worked by angles and not dynamically. The lighting now only travels by block length away from the light source, and doesn't factor in which way the sun is pointing. If it did factor in which way the sun was pointing, there'd have to be a whole new sequence created to form shadows.
I mean, it sounds pretty doable, it'd just require taking apart the code now and reforming it based on the sun, because right now the "sun" is always the top middle of the sky coming downwards, so all that really has to be done is changing where and what the "sun" is.

I wish Notch would give us access to the first build of Minecraft, back when there were four blocks and everything was based on supercreativity.
Agreed. I really do miss the old style "wood" block. It looked more like white slabs of breeze block.

Looks nothing like wood. Like you said, it looks more like that slab-brick material. He should keep wood as it is and add those slabs.

here is the latest backup I made of the server, as of last night.

Spelunking
I've gone into the cave I mentioned yesterday. It was only partially uneventful. As I entered, I encountered the remains of a sheep, possibly the one I saw last night. Of course, it was too dark in the cave too see much past the entrance, so I came back later with a torch. I heard the noises I'd heard late last night, but I didn't dare go any further. The cave looks halfway dug out, as if someone had tried to start a mine and then ran off, scared away by something.
As I turned to leave, I collected some wool for safekeeping. Hopefully I will be able to find more later. I plan on returning to the cave tonight, possibly to set up a small camp there and such. I plan to dig it out some more, see if there's any precious oils inside. I'll need them for fuel when I make my leave.
Until then,

Indev gives me 1 FPS and lightning doesnt update, at all.
Indev gives me a greater performance over current creative and survival. In those two, I have to have the 2nd fog setting on to get playable framerates. In Indev, I need no fog at all!
I got 1488 as the number in the top right though. :saddowns:

Same.
Is it just me, or is the night / day cycle way too long? I get barely anything done aboveground before I have to run back home as it turns dark. Seriously annoying. And then when I DO leave my house in the morning, there are about 20 mob creatures waiting outside for me.
Night should be 20 mins, day should be 30 in my opinion.

:crossarms:
But anyways, I think that the day/night cycle is just fine for me, could even be shorter. Or at least have fast nights with highly dangerous mobs. But I suppose that's what the poll is for.
Oops, typo. Meant to say too short. Bit drugged out on pain meds at the moment.
I think mobs should attempt to avoid light areas, unless the player is nearby.

I agree.
I agree.
It's funny because when I read this post, I immediately saw a reflection of "yeah i agree".
(If you don't get it look up the user "CNN".) :buddy:
I think direct line of sight should be implemented... I hate when a skeleton finds its way to your door from a cave on the other side of a hill when you're inside the house.
Only five moar toasts
wow we went through this thread fast
I think it's awesome. If you dumplevel SniperSurvival to Indev conversion (Non destroyed or destroyed), the mobs have an awesome way of finding their way around.
Stay away from the Subtransit entrances, bad things come out of there.

Set up a base camp
Well, it took a little time, but my home-away-from-home is all set up. I will be traveling to the cave during the day, and returning to my starting base at night, mostly to protect me from... Well, there's no need for worry. The groaning earlier as well as the discarded sheep carcass has told me that there are predators on this island. Perhaps if I move to one higher up soon, I will be able to get a clear view of the sun.
Ah, yes, I forgot to mention. I've landed and set up camp on one of the lower islands. At around noon, the sun is blocked by the upper islands until three or four. It is nearly as dark as night in the shadow of the other islands, though it clears up pretty quick.
Anyway, I crafted an extra chest to keep any of my findings in and set it next to my workbench, which I will take with me wherever I go in case I am in need of supplies. I cut down a few trees and made a makeshift door to the cave, which I will seal at night so I may sleep there and further my studies.
As I entered the cave, I heard the birds again. Louder, this time. I'm sure it was nothing. I will take some rock samples and record them here.
As always,
