It sucks that the free copies don't allow you to beta test, but I can't complain, got my copy from a friend, cant wait until this comes out
It was extremely nice of them to give away 45,000 free copies. Friends can get into the game without paying a dime and people who paid get a larger community.
I never played the first Natural Selection, but I did play Quake 2 Gloom which I've personally thought NS seemed to be inspired from or the other way around(No idea what came first).
Haven't grabbed a copy yet, been debating over grabbing this for myself or grabbing the 4pack and dumping it on my friends too. I guess I just have to work out if they'll actually play it.

After all of the issues they had it was actually probably slightly even more than 45,000. It was a nice move to try to get a nice community setup on launch.

Just got gifted one from a friend whom I haven't talked to in a while, felt kind of bad taking it, but he insisted. Also I accepted it but it only says Natural Selection 2 Preorder? Guessing gift is only preorder and not beta.

The gift and any preorder version of the game are not going to include the beta.
And to the guy above you, no you will not receive one that was for people who supported them before preorder on Steam.
Got to try this for the first time at Eurogamer, bloody amazing fun, finished a match before leaving the booth.

I didn't speak to anybody there except the guy sitting next to me, we were trying to stick together when wandering into alien territory, we let the final assault.
Any staff were just chatting to spectators and explaining the game/handing out pamphlets.

The gamemode I seemed to be playing was the same one as I keep seeing in youtube vids so unless that's combat mode...I didn't see it.

It was occasionally fun, if incredibly imbalanced, but the main problem was that it completely cannibalized ns_ servers.

Really? When I saw "lowered lerk speed..." I was expecting some other nerfs, but instead they made it stronger and tougher?
My problem with Lerks is that they have more health, are faster than, and hit harder (I think) than Skulks, which is bull, because they can fly. So I've always felt that they need to be a little weaker, so that they're not a direct upgrade compared to the Skulks.
I am sad over the balance in this game.

Well you DO have to spend time and resources to evolve into a Lerk, so why shouldn't it be more powerful?
This is very true. A lot of my friends complain at how OP the fade is, but most of the time they run off by themselves and get killed. A lerk costs 30 res, but a fade costs 50 for christ's sake. That is as much as an exosuit. Honestly, if you get caught alone with a fade, you deserve to get ravaged.

Infinite kills as long as you don't mess up
If you don't pick regeneration as a fade, you're doing it wrong.

I mean, Marine weapons aren't all direct upgrades of each other, there are trade offs.
Also, do alien "upgrades" (carapace and stuff) still cost nothing? I hate that.

Depends on the situation. He certainly isn't invulnerable as a lot of people think.
Against a single exo suit, the onos should win. But if it's a large open room with alot of marines in it, you're gonna die very quickly. Onos is great at taking out single powerful buildings and enemies, or small groups of marines.
