You get the deluxe.
You also get the black if you get the Special Edition.
How come this game is so impenetrably difficult for me? When I'm an alien, I can chomp on some marine 4 or 5 times and still lose, but then as a marine, I'll get chomped maybe 3 times and that's it. I'm normally good at fps' but I am so not used to training targets so close up.

It depends really. As alien, to take down a Marine you need to parasite them once and bite them for 75 damage 2 times or 3 bites without parasite on 0 armor.
After first armor level you need to bite them 3 times and 4 times after second, parasite only helps to reduce your TTK early game, but it is still useful to do to tag them.
Don't forget that your bite angle influences the amount of damage dealt, 75 on direct hit, 50 on missangled and 25 damage almost of screen.
More important, don't run on the floor , make full use of your speed and manouverbility. Don't attack the same marine if you are dealing with a group.
Jump from marine to wall to marine or else they will just aim at each others feet and you are done.
Also a good thing is to try to listen when a marine comes around the corner and engage shortly before he comes around it, so he doesn't have time to aim at you and you are allready in bite range.

The marines probably got armor upgrades, or your hits weren't registering.

Very useful advice thanks! The parasite is the skulk's secondary attack, right? Is it DoT?
[editline]2nd November 2012[/editline]
Also, would someone be able to explain the lerk's attacks? I managed to get a few kills using the spores, but it's really difficult to even tell if you're doing anything useful. Annoying that there's no feedback for those kinds of attacks.

Parasite isn't DoT.
Lerk's Spores are super useful. Just fly around armories and groups of marines and lay down that gas.
I watched a couple of videos of people playing as Lerk. Damn, I look a like a baby bird that tries to fly for the first time compared to them. :v:
It is fun to see so many marines get raped once skulks go vertical, most people are so used to horizontal shooters that they can't aim for this in this game.

Actually it's easy as long as they stay in the walls. I have way much trouble shooting them when they're running circles around me.
So I could finally play the game this morning after the patch, suddenly it's somehow 5 hours later.
It's not really news at this point, but this game is awesome.
Accidently modified then reverted a lua file but NS2 still thinks it is different, thank you steam validate!

My attempt at making a very very very very (very very very...) simple mod:

Literally removing part of an if statement.
Also helped me figure out what the mod tools actually do and how to set up a mod.

This was due an invalid configuration file on the servers (nothing to do with the patch). I hear it's been fixed up now.

Whips are the most hilarious thing I think I've ever seen in a game. I was practicing as alien comm for the second time and there was a load of rookies on the other team. I basically reenacted day of the triffids, managing to maneuver the whips and kill them 7 or 8 times like that. Too fucking funny.
I still wish that they'd make it so that you'd get AvP2 style wallwalking(camera turning with you) as an option, way too used to that.

Best thing is if you manage to infest their main in lategame and just whiprush.
Meh, I used to feel the same way, but once you get used to this style it gives you a lot more control over your movement.
AvP's is a bit more immersive, but this is pretty precise

Oh, well, whatever the cause was I'm happy it's fixed.
Can someone give me tips on how to kill skults when they are jumping like crazy? I keep getting destroyed by them unless I am in a group with 3 other marines.

The problem with it in NS2 is that there is a lot of pipes and stuff on the ceilings and walls. Your view would go around like crazy.

Don't get close enough that their jumping and biting at the same time. This typically means you have lost already.
I just had my first of many to come (i'm sure) incredible games. I was playing aliens, and the soldiers where they were putting up a tough fight. We counter this by getting a group of skulks together, and started coming out of the walls everywhere at the soldiers every time we encountered a group of them.
We ended up slowly pushing them back while spreading infestation to what seemed like 90% of the map:

By the end of the game we were just outside their final base where they were holding out incredibly well, to the point that we had to shove a bunch of structures in the final tunnel we had to go through, before we got 2 onos and smashed their shit in.

always bite from the back, you can get 1-2 bites before he can turn around and think about shooting
I loved this concept art pic, but the one on the site is so small, so I spliced together the huge version from the art book

I need the link to that. I want to change it with my friend's face and set it up on his game before he plays.
I find it strange that hives have to put over tech points, but I guess there is the non-sludge there too (so why doesn't the hive/command pod produce resources)

Maybe they need the resources to be self sustaining or something
Yeah I was thinking since they allow players to drop in structures maybe the CC runs off power from the tech point (which is why it works without a power node) and the Hive feeds off of tech point power, converting it into energy that can be used for growth.
The glow of the hive might even be a visual representation of the power it's sucking from the Tech Point.
