i dont know anything about alien commander forgive me ~support skulk 4 lyf~
Bought it, played it, love it. I'm using a quad core AMD and a 460 gtx, and getting some mild slowdowns but it's not too bad. If it's an inhouse engine I can't see why it won't be optimized further in the near future.
oh my god it is so damn annoying when you lose an exo because the onos is clipping into you and you don't know where it is

check out sanity mod its in the workshop
Is it just me or are sentry guns not worth the resources they cost? Whips are a lot better in my opinion cause it actually hurts the marine more while the sentry guns tickle the aliens.
imo they should be stronger and depend on an ammo feed rather than power. It'd be interesting to see an aliens-esque type of situation where the marines are cut-off and have to hold off, using sentries to defend welded doors and such.
downside is that they should cost a lot more.
Does anyone get weird spikes in their ping while playing? My actual FPS is really smooth most of the time, but I get these periodic jumps from 90 or less ping to 999 for a few seconds. It basically freezes me and then goes back to being smooth. I've played around with my settings but it doesn't seem to help much. I even disabled Avast temporarily, which did feel like it helped, but the issue came back on map change. I'm currently doing a fresh install in case something weird got left over from the beta. Is this just a problem with the latest build? My game lagged in beta, but it was just FPS lag.

But the devs have said time and again that sentries aren't meant to be used for defense. They're supposed to be used offensively, to help push and secure a location.
The whole premise of this game is teamwork and combat, not hunkering down in a base surrounded by 50 sentry guns and defending it against Aliens, that'd just be insanely boring.
too bad so many new players like to hunker down rather than pushing as one.
I can't wait to join a clan, I've seen some awesome gameplay videos of clans just decimating the enemy team.

There was this bit in my map NS2_Goliath where you could hide in a little hole underneath an elevator. The onos couldn't get in and there were 5 marines hiding inside. They thought they were safe until three skulks crawled in with them from behind.
No one was spared.

The sentry guns scare me off because I relate them to TF2 where they can actually be dangerous. I just need to get rid of that reflex and remember that when you get behind them, they can't see/shoot you. You don't even have to care if 3 of them shoot you while you destroy them if you're Onos.
I would like some more tracers, as far as I can see the hydra does not fire a visible projectile (and possibly skulk parasite and lerk spikes too)

Would make the shooter more visible, so it's harder to shoot someone and let them think WTF IS DAT COMING FROM

True, true.

Gotta figure out how to get a non-player's health from a clientindex.
Damn 0 documentation.
last night I managed to kill an exosuit as just a lone skulk, but he was probably already a bit damaged
somebody in a server i was playing in admitted and bragged about making and using a mat hack mod that made invisible aliens bright blue.
Like it even matters, cloaking is garbage. Countered by a building essential to marine tech and easy enough to see anyway as long as you know what to look for.
I dreamt there were like 4 movement upgrades for aliens
The game isn't COMPLETELY moddable, there is the damn "Client" and "Server" which isn't accessible conventionally at all plus the sound system could be better to not use those fmod archives things, what happened to good old free floating WAV files?

Anyone else think the game's icon looks like an owl?
Commanding is too stressful for me. I've only played aliens, but I feel really out of control over what's going to happen. Maybe if my team was really good at taking orders I'd feel differently, but despite my best efforts we rarely win, and it doesn't feel like there's stuff I can do more effectively.

If you mean the shortcuts icon it's just the usual white "unknown file" -icon for me, like 80% of non-Valve Steam-shortcuts are for me.

In my last windows install I noticed that happened to me too at some point, it was kinda annoying.
Frig sake. Just had my first game of Alien Comm and I can see why people think Aliens need a buff. If players aren't communicating, then as commander you have little power to inform them. They don't understand how vital it is to have a cyst connection all the way to a new base. They should add in more ways of informing players as an alien comm, but its more a player problem that should go away or lessen over time.
That feature areally exist, its called a microphone. Playing com without a microphone is like trying to play starcraft by asking your 6year old sis to hold the mouse for you.

Yeah, there isn't a whole lot you can do as Alien commander.
Just have to make sure you get the right upgrades in the right order and help out with a bone wall and mist every now and again.
Aliens do require a bit more personal skill rather than teamwork.
Whereas Marines require a little more teamwork to win.
You get quite a bit more control as Marine commander though, being able to give ammo, health and a nano shield. Not only that but you can give right-click orders just like any other RTS and it'll direct those newer players easier.

Except place cysts.
Place cysts EVERYWHERE.
All day, place cysts, place them, place them all.

I could not agree more.
Alien commanding is much more dynamic, in my opinion.
Everything builds by itself, you can move forward defensive structures by using shift and unrooting whips (they work similar to spine crawlers in sc2).
By having buildings grow by themselves, without need of other players, your team can focus on harassing the crap out of enemy team, get few skulks to run around a map with celerity, silence and regeneration (carapace is overrated for skulks!!!), it's the 2nd fastest building killing alien lifeform, just behind onos!
It's way more painful to lose an extractor as marine commander if you know there is none to rebuild it even if it's location is safe.
Build aggressively, spread your infestation deep into enemy territory, build whips near their structures, build double shades in conquested chambers, forward healing bases (5x crag + shift).
Buff your aliens with drifters (25% faster attack rate) + drifters alone deal 5 normal damage almost 2 times per second, in other word, you can swarm marines with drifters if you want, that will draw some fire away from other lifeforms while not being totally useless .
You can also drop onos eggs, but I find it cheap and only worthy if you have whole green team.
Mixed team > Onos team.
What I find while commanding marines...
Put some pgate here and there, in key locations, put that extractor there and wait for marine to build it or otherwise send mac.
and...
Upgrade your arms lab and prototype lab... that's all.
Only thing left you can do is spam medikits and ammo packs with some nanoshield here and there.
I do not find that fun and rewarding at all. I find it boring as hell when compared to alien commanding, which is much faster paced, like sc2 zerging.
Really, the most fun I have when commanding aliens, when enemy team ends up in totally infested main base with whips, many shifts and crags on the ground and hundreds of eggs around. That looks amazing in first person and totally destroys marines' morales... way better to win games by that than just spamming onoses ;) .
That's true, you do get to do a bit more yourself as Alien commander.
But you don't get much control over the players or the course of the battle, except for placing eggs, crags and whatnot.
Actually, that's what I forgot in my last post, placing Onos eggs can change the entire match.

You really should be physically commanding your individual marines, compared to aliens you have to look after your marines more, it's harder for them to escape a sticky situation, and they require more teamwork, and that's hard for them on the ground if they can't clearly see everyone at once and get updates on where enemies are approaching from.
not to mention arc tanks are terribly underrated
