Quick question, but can anyone refer me to a some sort of good in-depth tutorial series (preferably videos)? I've been watching NaturalSelection2HD's videos whenever he uploads them and I've gotten really interested in the game, and I'm about to buy it. I'd rather not go in blind and blunder around like a total moron dragging my team down as I try to figure shit out on my own. I'd prefer to be on the Marines side and be a good little marine just following the orders of the Comm, since from watching NS2HD play aliens, I think I would rather suck at playing alien. I've kinda-ish got some of the basic mechanics down, but it's better safe than sorry.

There's servers just for people like you. They're green on the list, and they're for rookie players. Your name will be green too, so people will know you have >48 hours gametime. The community for the most part is nice and helpful, ask questions when you need to, and don't com until you know everything there is to know about anything.

The game for the most part is self explanatory sans commanding. To learn how to command you just need to play for a while as a foot soldier, and pay attention to what the winning commanders do.

You'll be better off than most new players, since you took the time to look up videos on youtube and learn a little bit. Most people just blindly jump in.
It's great playing with friends. Had a match where due to me hoarding my resources and the commander's decisions, I ended up playing as a camouflaged Onos. When all of your friends are in group chat you get to hear them freak out when suddenly they're getting attacked from behind after walking past me through an empty hallway.
People need to learn how to play skulk before jumping into all the others. Lerk is another one that's semi noob friendly but stop wasting resources on fades because they're assassins, or wasting 75 resources on an onos just because "lol i want 2 play big un"
Just had probably my best game as marine comm, took 50 minutes to win, but man did my team listen to everything and worked together so well.
Even got a couple of guys into their base just to take out all of their upgrades.
Round before that was just as fun. Nobody expects shade start for aliens. Not even the alien players!
Is 5 kills and 2 deaths with a score of ~150-200 alright for a first game? K:D doesn't seem to matter in this game, but I still want to know if I did alright. It was just me and one other guy on my team, and he was the commander. Other team had 2 guys as well. The enemy wasn't really offensive until we were far from our base trying to attack theirs, and the only deaths I had were because they both came at me at once. Eventually comm got us both exo's and we completely stomped their shit. It was hard to actually fight in a firefight because the game would lag up every now and then, and ONLY right in the middle of a fight.
I just wish the game was more optimized, I get ~15 FPS if I try to play at 1920x1080 with everything else set to low. Any lower resolution sucks because anything that's far away gets all pixelly on my monitor.
Another question as well, is it a good idea as an Exo to stomp any eggs I see near a hive while still trying to focus fire on the hive? It makes sense to me since they won't so easily spawn next to us in an attempt to defend.
Anyone have a copy of the gamespot review before it got taken down? :v:
I hope to see you guys in the ESL Studio Finals stream tonight. Gonna be the biggest NS2 tournament yet.
I'm definetly gonna be in there and going for Exertus.
first game as alien comm, get 2 hives, have decent chunk of the map, upgrades and whatnot as normal, expand infestation. start losing harvesters... tab to look at scores. marines all have 5:1 or higher k/d ratios and all my aliens are useless gg. Place onos egg, person that uses it dies within 20 seconds. fuck everything.
it seems the game likes to upgrade shit i never press too, press leap, it does bilebomb. Want to make 2nd hive into whichever gives armour, nope starts on stealth one... asdf
also screw playing comm again, or at least alien commander. You have to rely on your aliens actually being good but marines seem to be more generous if they're not that great.

Well it's not like they can learn without playing...
I love being a Lerk. Nothing better than flying through a bunch of entrenched marines, dropping deadly fart gas, and watching your skulks finish them off.

I've noticed that bug before, and I agree with the commander, I went as alien comm, we had at least 8 people on the team and within 5 mins of the game starting no one was in the chair so I took it.
Then some guy was telling me its a waste of resources to build whips when no one was even defending the hive or following my orders.
If I get games like that again where no one goes commander 5 mins in or whatever I'm just gonna leave
It is a waste of res :)
Just wish people didn't stack, not like we have stats for everyone to see. Just pretty fucked up people will wait and make sure everyone with highest k:d get on same team. Ruins everything for me.
stomping or being stomped is not fun.

I'd rather see a player go Onos and do mediocre than go the entire game with a full res pool.
It is a waste of res :)
Fair enough, we'd of lost the game either way anyway, my game crashed when the hive got killed, and if no one wanted to command at the start I doubt someone would of replaced me
I think there should somehow be more of an incentive to be the commander, but I have no idea what.

Playing as comm is like playing another game.

I don't mind it really but I much prefer playing as a skulk or marine w/e. I only go in if someone hasn't after 5 minutes.
Also maybe make it a bit obvious on the aliens side if they are missing a commander, they have popups at intervals but marines have a constant alert on their side, which as far as I remember the aliens don't have something similar.

I could not agree more.
Natural Selection 2 really is two games in one.
It's an ENTIRELY different experience playing as commander.
i'm thinking about getting this game but i don't really know THAT much about it yet. help me convince myself to buy it?:v:

Buy it.

If you like aliens, or if you like starcraft and ever wondered what it would be like to *be* that marine. Or if you ever wanted to climb on walls or knock entire squads of marines on their ass and brutally destroy players, or fly around with a Jetpack or shoot aliens with a dual minigun mech suit or with a flamethrower etc, you should buy this game.
Not to mention it is getting 9/10 and 4/5 star reviews like crazy.
In other news, there is a NS2 European Finals Tournament starting up in an hour. (11:00 PST) Will have Archaea and Exertus playing live in the same room, casted on ESL TV. In Cologne. The lead dev Charlie, as well as PR guy Hugh is there, and Hugh has already done 4 behind-the-scenes videos of the lead up to the event.
Here is the first one:
You can watch the tournament here: http://www.twitch.tv/esltv
I really hope the gamestop rereview gives NS2 a better score. It drags NS2s metacritic score down alot and thats what many go to first when looking at a game.
Sadly I'm going to have to watch the recording tomorrow.
NS2 ESLTV stream live now: http://www.twitch.tv/esltv
lol that player screaming when he dies is hilarious
Game looks awesome with ambiant occlusion on the esl stream
sigh, 180 resoures gone now on those hives.
and now 220 if it lives
