After 4 hours your rookie status will go away, what I did to avoid anyone bashing me for being new to the game was just help construct stuff and help when needed. The only time I did have a problem was this one guy who said that the game would be better as an mmo, I told him it wouldn't and he said I was "too young" to remember Starship Troopers. I've seen that movie plenty of times and I'm turning 20 this New Years day. Then again every game has condescending 30+ of age people.
I played on a server full of cool people that were teaching rookies (including me) how to play the game.
Probably a one-time experience.

Fuck this game's community.
just because of one server's experience?
lmao

Well yeah it's kind of hard to determine myself to play the game now after that experience.
It's irrational as fuck I know but that's how it's sitting in my head at the moment.

Well don't, a lot of people in the game can be VERY (and I mean very) rookie friendly. Hell, one of the devs makes a shit ton of videos of him playing and he is constantly going off on how much he loves new players. If you don't want people to treat you differently just because your name is colored green, I believe you can turn it off in the options menu. It goes away on its own after playing ~15 hours though.

Yeah, you can disable rookie mode. Last server I was in, pretty much everyone encourage a complete newbie to jump into the commander seat because "It's a great time to learn!" and were just as helpful as they could be while biting ankles.
Just picked up the game and I have to say it is really enjoying and decently easy to get the hang of game mechanics wise.
I'm glad I got it!

It's not
I think this is one of the few communities that understands if you alienate new players you won't have much of a game to come back to down the road.
I just got gifted this game and Chivalry from an awesome friend, and I've dicked around in explore mode and watched all the tutorials and read up on the game, and I think I'm ready for my first match. I don't have a mic, though, so I don't intend on playing commander anytime soon. Still,
1) Is a mic absolutely necessary when not a commander? In all the games I play I communicate via text but in some cases that's just not quick enough.
2) In options, there's a "rookie mode" option. What does it do? Should I turn it off?
3) Are there bots I can use to practice?
Thanks for any advice you can give.
You don't need a mic unless you're commander
Rookie mode will give you tips on the game i believe
You don't need to worry about bots, If you want practice the best way to get it is the find the rookie friendly servers (they have the green text on the serverbrowser) and play. You'll be with other people in the same boat and you should learn pretty quickly.

As long as you're not commander, it's not necessary, if you do command, yeah, you should get a mic, even if you type lightning fast, players have their eyes on the combat rather than the chatbox.
Rookie mode is your name appearing in green to indicate this, just keep it until it wears off and make sure to tell people you're new, don't hesitate to ask, others will help, there's few assholes who just outright despise rookies.
There's no official bots, and the current bots are very buggy and do not represent how the combat work at all, you're better off playing in rookie servers (green names on the list)
The keyword here for you is to be attentive, ask for help and LISTEN for what others tell you, especially commanders.
I wonder if we'll see siege in ns2. I remember that was one of the best things about ns.
This game has one of the best communities towards new players. Turn on rookie mode, im pretty sure it will give you an easier time
One of the last games me and a friend encouraged a new players to get into the commander seat.
Even though he had no mic. We helped as much as we could by telling him what everything was for
and what to build and where to build it.
We lost, but was great fun still.
It seems I get a better game out of the newbie servers rather than the normal ones, mainly because they aren't full of clanfags who talk shit most of the time. For me, anyway.
There's no way in hell my rig right now could run this, and I already bought the game. I'm afraid it'll be dead by the time I upgrade which isn't until graduation. This game has taken off really well, hats off to the devs
I get horrible rubber-banding a lot of the times when I play and I'm not sure why. Does anyone else get this?
he said I was "too young" to remember Starship Troopers. I've seen that movie plenty of times and I'm turning 20 this New Years day. Then again every game has condescending 30+ of age people.
He probably meant the book.
Well, played for a while, eventually my rookie mode turned off by itself, but I'm still not 100% sure I've got the game down.
I really like it. Except if you don't have a good commander you will lose, and when your entire team is green you're going to get stomped. Had some guy gloating how bad he stomped us even though his entire team had no rookies and we had 2 non-rookies, but other than that most people were friendly and helpful.
I like playing both teams, but I like Marines more even though I do better as an Alien. I feel like there's more teamwork with Marines and you really need to stick together unlike the Aliens where you can still go by yourself and do well unless the teams are stacked.
One match my entire team went Gorge at the beginning and we kept planting stuff down while spamming the healing spray. We zerged the other team and won, which was ridiculous and felt almost overpowered.
I'd really like to know how to play commander better, like what strategies I should use, what my priorities are in the beginning of the match, hotkeys, etc. Guess I have more research to do.
Bought this on the steam sale for $10 and man is it fun. My first match was a little off putting (kiddy whining on mic for an exo and team that didn't communicate very much), but once I left that server and found a good one I had a blast. I haven't dared to try commander yet, but I think I might give it a whirl tomorrow on a rookie server.

Also, do you guys have a server you normally play on? I could see this being incredibly fun with a group. Sorry if this has been answered several times already. If so you might want to take a note from the EVE Online and Guild Wars 2 threads and put a big flashing sign with the answer.
The only time I've actually had a bad experience in this game was when two German comp players showed up and started wreacking EVERYONE. It was kinda sad actually, one of them went commander as marines and the other just waltzed into our only base and started killing our hive all alone. Nobody could kill the bastard, he had great aim and could dodge almost all our attacks and his buddy kept him supplied with ammo and medkits. This went on a few more matches, at one point they even dropped a phasegate outside our base but never built it. The guy was just standing there and killing anyone who got in his line of sight but we couldn't just ignore him because he might build the phasegate. These two bastards must have been laughing their asses of at the rest of us as we died time after time trying to kill them.

Any chance they had [HBZ] as a tag?

No idea, it was a few months ago. I'm not even entirely sure they where german, I just have some vauge memory of someone speaking german in that match.
They need to add a assist system
They should also introduce a sudden death mechanic. My 5th or so match went on for about 80 minutes before I had to leave due to real life stuff.

I'd rather they not. So far almost every match I've played has lasted a minimum of 30 minutes, and I find it immensely enjoyable to watch the Aliens and Marines push each others front lines back and fourth across the map.

After playing more, yeah, you're right. It's mostly the "bringing the game to a screeching halt" type of deal that bores and frustrates the hell out of me. Defending the last hive against marines with late-game equipment for a straight hour becomes less of a match and more of a war of attrition. No pushing lines back and forth, just a whole hour of spawning as a Skulk, committing xenocide or some other kamikaze-ish attack, dying and then respawning.

Not sure if I feel like learning how to compile it.
If it's even possible with playermodels.
