I've actually got my first tourney this weekend. Not an official one or anything, but it should be fun. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time.
Bought an archenemy set the other day, haven't had the chance to use it yet. Is the archenemy ruleset any fun?
Archenemy has the potential to be fun. Try mixing it with Planechase, it gets silly.

Once I did a 2v6 (the 2 with scheme cards) and it was horribly unbalanced in the Archenemy's favor, both because of lack of communication on the team of 6's part and the fact that archenemies are basically god-tier. 1v3 is great, though.
I've actually got my first tourney this weekend.
Me too actually. Entry is to buy a booster, winner chooses booster by the rares first. Also about 7-10% chance to win Elspeth vs. Tezzeret Duel Decks. It's tomorrow, so I'm frantically trying to get my Infect & Defile a bit more tournament worthy.

I'm going in with my blue lockdown deck. Because fuck yes, Rimefeather Owls.
I'm hoping my half-borrowed Skithiryx Infect and Defile deck can at least make me win some games. 14 players will be attending, and like half are from my school.
Wear your poker face.
This thread is making me realize why I don't really feel like I fit in with the guys that go to FNM near me - they aren't FPers. [editline]1st April 2011[/editline]
Yeah, I understand how Swerve works to counter things. I've got a deck chock-full of counters in addition to it to beef up my Pyromancer Ascension, so countering things with Swerve is pretty much a last-resort. I can only see Birds of Paradise being incredibly useful (over Llanowar Elves) in a deck with more than four colors of mana where it's incredibly scarce to get the right type of mana. In a mono-green or a green/other deck, both are equally good. Llanowar Elves still rule in elf decks, though.
I think BoP mainly sees use in 3 color decks. My current favorite green manafixer is Lotus Cobra though. And the art, so nice. So nice. If I had $350 I'd build a valakut deck for standard FNM with playsets of titans and lotus cobra. [editline]1st April 2011[/editline] Also my view on the question of whether using net decks means you're like, not really playing magic, or cheating or something, seems to kind of be missing the point. Tons of people play just for the in-game strategy while deckbuilding is just time consuming and expensive. Not that I haven't made my "own" decks - just tweaks and changes on existing archetypes in the metagame. Nearly every tournament winning deck is just a clever twist on an established deck that gets ahead of everybody else. Not that it isn't all kinds of fun to bring a weird deck from out of nowhere to a FNM and actually pull out wins. Last week a local guy was running a g/r ramp equip deck that actually worked. [editline]1st April 2011[/editline] maybe it was G/W, actually. Was pretty baked.
I placed 6th (2-0, 2-0, 0-2, 0-2 = 6/12p), and had to settle for a Vatmother. No lottery winnings either, but there will be another tournament in two weeks. Can't wait. [editline] [/editline] Favourite moment: (Him: 30 life, 4 poison. Me: 5 life.) Playing against mono-white lifegain. He has a Wall of Omens and a Serra Ascendant out with it's 30hp+ bonus, with a Sword of Body and Mind equipped. I have a Plague Stinger. It's looking bad, but I get my Livewire Lash out and equip it on the stinger, and add Distortion Strike. So yeah, he gets 2 counters when I target the stinger with Distortion Strike, and I finish him off with a lovely unblockable final 4.

That sounded like two turns, and he could've easily retaliated with the Ascendant wielding the sword.

Plague Stinger has infect and is a 1/1 with flying. He targets it with 2 Distortion strikes and deals 4 damage to his opponent, which become 4 poison counters bring him to 8. Distortion strike is makes target creature have +1/+0 and is unblockable until the end of the turn. It also has rebound, but that doesn't come into play here. So he then attacks his opponent with a 5/1 unblockable flier with infect, putting opponent's poison counters to 14 and ending the game right there. Unless I'm dumb and it doesn't work like that.

Distortion strike is the new mise for bad decks.
What exactly makes it bad? It's U for +1+0 and unblockable with rebound. It's not terribly amazing, but it's not bad. Isaight.

Isaight.
For the same cost, you could unsummon an expensive creature, especially one that required championing in some form or another. I don't think the card is bad myself, and it does a lot for a single blue mana.
It takes up a slot in your deck. It doesn't advance your board, it doesn't hurt their board. It's a very narrow card. Infect decks don't even want to be playing blue. So weakening your mana base or your creature base to play a less than mediocre card is an awful choice.
Makes sense. I need a way to make my U/G deck stronger against removal/control. Any suggestions?
U = undead? EDIT: Nevermind, I dumb Afraid that's a big weakness with green decks is that they are rather susceptible to control IIRC. I know white has quite a few cards that give you or cards you have protection from certain spells, but I don't know of any green cards that do the same. I always thought green was best as creature combat scenarios mid/late game. EDIT2: This won't save your cards but you could easily retrieve them once they get countered. Won't save you from bounces though. But bounces are not so bad with green's excellent mana accel. http://magiccards.info/query?q=!eternal+witness and http://magiccards.info/query?q=!reclaim Oh this card will pretty much hard counter all control if you can get it out and they not counter it: http://magiccards.info/query?q=!City+of+Solitude Though if they do you could always use the above two cards to put it back into gear.
Eternal Witness is such a beast card. Should've been 1UU imho.
Tried them out, didn't really work. Thanks, though.
Makes sense. I need a way to make my U/G deck stronger against removal/control. Any suggestions?
Control decks are incredibly difficult to deal with. My advice would be to get a lot of faster creatures out. Whenever I play my counterspell deck, I often have trouble against the likes of a goblin deck. You really need to win fast and make them focus on getting some defensive cards so they don't die, yet have to give up a chance to counter your spells. That is one of the only ways I lose in my blue control. Although my deck isn't as good as most, I'm sure.
Played a 4-way today. Had a chance to do 20+ damage in a turn but I was too nice. Never again. :(

I think if I use Paradox Haze to get them off the grtound faster, I should be fine. Threw in a couple Fogs to buy me time as well.

Throw in some control magic for good measure. [editline]5th April 2011[/editline] Oh wait, your deck to beat control? Offensive counterspells could work... (Spell Pierce is an example of an offensive counterspell, they're narrow but cheap and are designed for when you need to resolve a spell, so if you like play some control magic, they go to counter it, but DERP spell pierce'd) Against removal ccccounter spell
I was running Spell Pierces, but it never really worked out. I guess I just don't know how to use them properly. Tips for that?
