i just started magic the gathering 2 days ago and im happy i did. im using a green and white starter deck along with like 4 booster pack cards. My next purchase is going to be the black and blue 2012 starter deck because it comes with all the Empire cards. Which are way op and make you win
also having downloaded the demo on steam ive found more cards in green and white that i want haha

can someone explain to me what the hell it means to have like a -1/-1 counter or what that does, cuz i have a few cards that say that

A -1/-1 counter gives a creature 1 less toughness and 1 less attack. It stays on the until either they are destroyed or returned to your hand. (Ex. I put a -1/-1 counter on a 3/3, it becomes a 2/2, but then he returns it to his hand, so when he plays it again, it is a 3/3.)
OK so what your saying is when someone is countered that when it gets killed it returns to the hand and not the graveyard. so the idea is to weaken your cards a bit but allow yourself to play it multiple times?
I threw a basic deck together out of a 2012 fatpack box and a Deckbuilder's Toolkit from Scars - 2011, as well as a few cards laying around.
Mono-blue Wizards.
Based around draw/mill via Jace's Erasure.
Elixir of Immortality / Trinket Mage.
Jace's Archivist and various Merfolk wizards.
Solitaire isn't too promising, so I know it needs some serious tweaking, but the idea is there.
How do you guys test out a deck without people around to play with?
I throw about 50 of my random artifact critters in a deck, summon one each turn and swing whenever possible.
It's not brilliant but it's better than just playing every card as though your opponent wouldn't do anything.
I sometimes just grab another deck of mine and play full-on, no holding back any moves possible.
I can usually avoid 'knowing' the other deck has a counterspell and such by taking short breaks here and there.
Yeah it's hard to simulate playing against a blue deck.
Red/green/white decks are pretty easy to simulate, just play creatures, burn and attack.

No... if a 1/1 gets a -1/-1 counter on it, it dies and goes to the graveyard. If a 2/2 gets a -1/-1 on it, it become a 1/1 until either it has been destroyed or returned to owner's hand. Counters can't be countered, but the card that puts counters on something can, like a sorcery or an instant.
-1/-1 counters can be negated by +1/+1 counters and vice versa.

Except on creatures with modular!
They still have +1/+1 counters, they're negated but when they die they still hand all the +1/+1s over.

That made me think of my old overpowered Archbound deck... ahh the Darksteel days...
haha played a nice game by myself today with 40 card decks green vs white no aritfacts. i won haha

ive only bought the starter pack with white and green + 3 booster packs and one from the starter thing. but i dont personally enjoy the combination of those two colors, its more unhelpful so far so im gonna buy the blue black starter deck and try a green black combination. especially with those Empires cards included in that pack. omg so overpowered
Dude, green/white rocks.
I've got the Knights vs Dragons deck of those colors with a terribly ramped mana base.
Talking all sorts of dual lands, except Savannah.
I just bounce them all in and out so much, I could use landfall.
magic workstation is quite handy for testing decks and such. The trial version only lets you play solitaire mode, but if you just open two windows you can have 2 solitaire matches with 2 different decks, if you catch my drift.
gives you some handy mana curve statistics, instant shuffling, altogether very useful.
well so far i feel like the white part i use has been mainly to slow down the other person and use flying. the green part tends to be able to halt their mana gain and straight up pulverize with the enchantments + creatures. plus lots of valuable instants
Oh my god I love my new Premium Sliver Deck.... plus he dice is epic
Does anyone else hate it when you get a really neat card in a booster, and you start using it and it's really fun, and then everyone else buys themselves a copy of it.
Kinda depresses me, it's happened with my unwinding clock. The only reason my mates are ordering it online is because I pulled it out of a booster.
I don't even know why they want it that bad, nobody but me is foolish enough to run 100% artifacts :/
Bought another M12 fatpack.
Sorin Markov, Frost Titan for mythic rares.
Another one, because why the fuck not?
Sun Titan and Frost Titan.
I used to play Magic when I was a child, had a green/red deck that I kinda hated because I needed to put alot of mana to summon most of the creatures.
Aha! So that's where the magic thread was.
I'm thinking of building a mana heavy indestructible artifact creature deck around Worldslayer, what do you guys think?

Hope you got 3 more where that came from.
I got one, but I plan on getting three more. I think my friend has one or two he'll let me use.
I just need to see if innistrad has some good indestructibles.
Well if you're going to build your deck around one card, you need to make sure you have 4 of those cards. Never base it on a card you don't have a good chance of getting out. Have cards that can let you draw that card if you need to. For instance I use the Blood Speaker/Reiver Demon combo. I almost always get the Blood Speaker before I get the Demon, so I use BS to draw RD, once I play Riever Demon, Blood Speakers ability kicks back in and I get him back from the grave. And I can then use that combo again and again until I get all my demons out.

Oh don't worry, this deck isn't going to be played until it's perfect. Until then I'll just piss people off with my goblin burn deck.
Anyone wanna share decks? I wanna get some feedback on my most recent deck and would like to see what others are playing.
Here is a mono-black deck I am working on that focuses on filling an opponents grave yard with creatures then stealing them with things like Mimic Vat and Gruesome Encore and then keeping them after my turn by tapping Sundial of the Infinite during my end-step.

I really want the Magic game on Steam. :/

How do you have two Legendary cards in your deck? Don't the rules limit you to one for each legendary card?
Did some quick research, and I was wrong.
[release]"Legendary
Legendary is a supertype, so you’ll i nd it written on the
type line before the card type. h ere can be only one of
a particular legendary permanent on the battlei eld at a
time. If two or more legendary permanents with the same
name are ever on the battlei eld at the same time, they’re
all put into their owner’s graveyard. h is is known as the
“legend rule."[/release]
Ah this thread. I am starting to really like the games on steam - although I prefer the decks from the first one, and wish I could play Karn's deck, it is pretty fun and would be a good way to introduce other people to the game.
Was playing with Nexion the other evening - he was playing Machinations and I was playing the ramp deck. He managed to play the darksteel colossus and I was pretty much hosed. Managed to play the creature that lets me draw cards when my creatures deal combat damage to players, so I let him swing and take me down to 4 life. Then, I swung with everything and drew I think six or seven cards and had him down to six life. Then played Aether Mutation targeting his Colossus, bouncing it and giving me 11 1/1 tokens. I won the next turn .
It was really tense and me wining entirely depended on drawing either that or polymorphing for ( hopefully ) something useful like one of the eldrazi - I got super lucky in the draw and managed to pull a victory out of it.
I seriously need to find a hobby shop or something similar near me that still runs drafts regularly, or at least general FNM - I miss playing against people in person.
