That's because card stores jack up prices. If you can find them at retail, they'll be cheaper (note: I don't know if the FTV sets get sold at retail stores. I've only seen duel decks, premium decks, and those 3 booster packs sold with a promo card.)
FTV won't sell at MSRP anywhere because the maze alone.
So what decks are everyone playing?
I'm playing Burning Vengeance in standard, Faeries in legacy, and Vela & Sek'kuar in EDH.
Krenko, Mikaus, The Unhallowd, and Angus Mackenzie for edh.
i'm building Kresh goblins
Played minimaster with a friends 12 booster packs, 3 2v2 rounds.
She got so god damn lucky, she pulled a clock of omens, nichol bolas, sands of delirium, primordial hydra and a bunch of other amazing rares.
I'm a little confused on my collecting, how do I know that I'm getting actual 8th edition cards and not actual reprints of them?
I read somewhere that borders are different on reprinted cards.

Do you mean fakes?
I don't know how to differentiate between legit cards and fake cards because I have never seen a fake card (unless I got screwed over and actually have fake cards). I've heard that there's some kind of test you can do with a blacklight, but that seems too farfetched to be anything but a rumor.
I've been working on a UW Delver deck. Here's what I have:

Probably gonna get a couple more mana leaks to replace the negates, and replace the essence scatter with another ponder. What do you think?

My mikaeus deck is scary.

I love that you have Grand Architect in there. He's one of my favorite cards.
I have to state the obvious and say you need more dual lands and Geist of Saint Traft, but that's really no fun.
If you want something neat, try Ludevic's Test Subject. People think it's terrible, but I've seen otherwise. You can play it on turn 2 and use it as a blocker. Whenever you have extra land open at the end of your opponent's turn, you can just throw your free mana into it. If your opponent has been dumb enough to let it transform, you basically won the game.
I can't wait until Return to Ravnica, my Commander deck is so ready for Boros Gideon
Man, I used to play this game like 3 years ago.
I'd really love to get back into it. What do you guys recommend for a returning player? What kind of stuff should I buy?

Depends on what everybody else plays.
I guess Modern would fit most new players best, so take a look around mtgtop8 for deck ideas.

Modern is still really expensive to get into, though. I'd actually recommend block constructed or standard. They're a bit cheaper.

It's a bit hard to find stores that run limited. I'd recommend going Standard, building a cheap mono-green deck like Duncore (Dungrove Elder + Rancor) or Rakdos Zombies. (B/R Zombies).
If you feel like spending some money, go straight for Miracle-Gro or U/W Delver. RUG Wolfrun is really good too right now.

There's always block constructed games and tournaments on MTGO. Most cards are cheaper there too. So block constructed online is the cheapest way to get back into the game. Of course, that's not as fun as most formats.
Standard is about to rotate, so there will be a lot more variety in decks in a month or so.
When is the next block coming out? I'll probably start with it when standard rotates. Would it be better to start with the core set? I'm not too sure.
Last time I played was a bit before conflux was released.

The next block is Return to Ravnica, which, as the title suggests, means we're return to Ravnica: City of Guilds. It comes out in almost exactly a month.
draft is best format for noobs
The Return to Ravnica spoilers just started today, actually. It looks like Golgari is going to be pretty fun again (Izzet too, of course)!
draft is best format for noobs
A format which is mostly skill may not be noob friendly but at least you're not crippled by your collection
It's terrible to know that your brother can infection rush you and you lose in three turns.
It's terrible to know that your brother can infection rush you and you lose in three turns.
whoever thought that it would be ok to have Rancor, Infect, and Wild Defiance+Mutagenic Growth in the same standard cycle, even for three months, needs to be punched in the throat
whoever thinks that bad aggro deck can actually win needs to l2p
because it's not like it's been doing really good or anything
I'm in need of some help. I need to figure out reliable ways to get a Deus of Calamity into play on turn 1 or 2. The applications for this should be obvious.
So far, all I can think of would be something like:
Turn 1: Forest -> Birds of Paradise, Lotus Petal
Turn 2: Forest -> Natural Order (sac the Birds) -> Deus of Calamity
or
Turn 1: Forest -> Birds, Memnite (or something else that costs 0)
Turn 2: Gaea's Cradle -> Natural Order (sac birds) -> Deus
The problem I have with this is that I would need to not only have a near perfect opening hand, but the Deus also doesn't have haste. I want to disrupt my opponent's mana base as quickly as possible.
I know I'm missing about a million and one obvious ways to do this.
Return to Ravnica spoilers have begun!

I got these today so hopefully i can beat my friend.
So many dual lands coming out. I'm just glad I'll have a chance to pull some of those shocklands that got so expensive. Also, Chromatic Lantern is going to be amazing. I have a 5-color planeswalker deck that has been looking for something like that.
Anybody going to the prerelease? I sadly won't be able to make it due to AWA being the same weekend.
Edit: Oh yes, I forgot! Next standard, I'm either continuing with Burning Vengeance, or finally getting my Splinterfright/Zombie deck into the level of standing a chance against anything.
