he wasn't a piss poor MC; he was complete and utter trash, yes, to the point of almost seeming two dimensionally garbage, but in the end [sp]this is actually justified[/sp] and the fact that so many people actually despise the bastard shows that he was well written enough to get people to actually dislike him
okabe was pretty great, especially when interacting with certain characters (Faris, Suzuha and Ruka come to mind) but I think his character did kind of flip flop (UNDERSTANDABLY) [sp]after a few too many mayurhi deaths[/sp] but I think he became [sp]a little TOO much of a shell of himself, I mean the chuuni thing was really a facade to keep himself and mayuri happy but the whole "MC is just putting on a persona" kind of seemed like "not again" to me[/sp]
Kai from R;N however is, though I like the guy, a pretty fucking bad MC. a realistic guy, maybe, but still boring as piss and entirely unenthused in the weird shit going around (takumi feared it, okabe embraced it, but Kai just doesnt give a shit) [sp]he'll probably get better even if he's the weakest of the three[/sp]
Sure, you could call it an accomplishment that people actually hate the written character, but I don't thinks it's a good thing when you hate the main character, one of the characters you spend the most time with. I mean sure, a person you know can be pretty interesting, but if you dislike him you probably don't want to spend time with him. I agree Kai is a bit of a lethargic and boring MC, but unlike Takumi, I don't mind him. He's not doing anything particularly well, but at least he's not doing everything wrong. Okabe managed to have enough progression while not being completely obnoxious from the start, but that's just my personal opinion.
I'll agree that C;H's "science" was bullshit compared to S;G's but one thing that I enjoyed more was the sense of mystery; other than a few things seeming obvious [sp]like the detective's partner being evil, its always the detective's partner[/sp] some other mysteries I really had no idea about throughout the entire game [sp]like the identity of Grim, the story behind the two little sisters and the insertion of Rimi[/sp], the last time I was actually wondering in a VN was probably Ever17
in S;G a lot of whats going on is directly explained to you because the cast is much more intelligent and held together as a group but that took a lot of the mystery away, and none of the moments were quite as "FUCK" as say [sp]seeing the nurse's sketches full of prophetic scribbles[/sp], although a few parts like [sp]psycho nae[/sp] were really goo
shame [sp]nae[/sp] is so fucking boring in the anime
You're right about the mystery, but seeing as you actually get to see what's going on at [sp]the developers of the NOAH II project and some members from the Council of 300[/sp] removes the guesswork that was involved with S;G, seeing as that was told completely from the lab members' perspective. [sp]And yes, I know Takumi could see what was going on because of his Gigolo powers, but it made the main enemy look way more transparant.[/sp]
All in all, I liked the overall story, but the MC really is the worst element of the VN. With Okabe I actually cared about what happened to him, with Takumi I couldn't care less if he died anywhere along the story, just because he's extremely annoying.
I don't think an MC has to be a likable MC, he just has to be someone that
A) interacts with his surroundings
B) is a vehicle for plot
C) actually has distinct, well done character of some sort
I mean I never really attached to the guy, I might have found his assholeness actually endearing compared to others, but the fact that he actually had enough character in him to deem him worth of such vehement dislike is pretty neat and enough for me to watch all the way what dumb shit he got up to without becoming disinterested.
its like a little something to spice things up in a sea of bland MCs; I'll give them that, all three sci adv protags are very distinct, in fact Kai's disinterest in itself is a pretty good shakeup (albeit a fucking boring one)
considering she's the main heroine I wish the anime put a little more effort into developing Aki, Frau is seemingly designated #1 probably because her and Kai's chemistry is great (NOT THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM)
[sp]hey I just realized aki is kai mixed around I wonder if this is relevant[/sp]

also C;H 's finale was much, much better than S;Gs [sp]with the waifu brigade, detective getting za warudo'd, whatshisface fighting with a giant crucifix sword and the 3 day crucifixion[/sp]
[sp]it was retarded, but it was great[/sp]

Chaos;head's ending is fucking retarded, the tone shifts from mystery to action, Takumi randomly grows balls with no progression, and pseudoscience is pulled out of the writers asses left and right.
Chaos;head's ending is fucking retarded
agreed
the tone shifts from mystery to action
there isn't really any mystery left besides the opening scene that becomes p obvious by the time you're [sp]about to blow up a big machine[/sp]
Takumi randomly grows balls with no progression
he's still a piece of shit just one with a sword [sp]noted by the rape delusion[/sp]
pseudoscience is pulled out of the writers asses left and right
thats the entire VN
its stupid as hell, but just like [sp]the swords[/sp] its ripped straight from the animes, its ridiculous but satisfying
[editline]a[/editline]
S;G's ending is perfect if you're a little more prone to realism but the perp for the worst timeline being [sp]an mindbogglingly retarded dad[/sp] was a let down imo
so many black bars
its like one of my hentai doujins
so many black bars
i tried to keep em small to be culturally sensitive

I doubt you'll be seeing anything about it for a long time, Better off watching the anime.
All this talk of C;H makes me wish it wasn't impossibly hard to get working. I kind of want to play it even though i know it'll make my blood boil and drive me to a murderous rage.

How is it impossible to get it working? Set your system locale to Japanese, install and play, that's really it.

the CGs are out there somewhere, someone said that things are going to escalate further next episode or so solely based on them
I got 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors for Christmas. It sounds interesting, so I'm looking forward to it.

You're right, it's very interesting.

I wish I had a ds to play it with.
i wish the emulators didnt crash 999 after 2 minutes of gameplay
i want to play it so bad
I bought Analogue on Steam today. I enjoyed the demo and decided to give the full version a try.
ok who was the liar that told me that the twist in 999 WASN'T like [sp]Ever17's[/sp]
BECAUSE I COULD HAVE SWORN I JUST [sp]played as a an ethereal force lurking behind the main player character as they dicked around a replica of an old tragedy in order to bring said ethereal force into existence and save the timelines OH YEAH AND A HANDFUL OF YOUR BUDDIES WERE IN ON IT AND LYING TO YOU THE WHOLE TIME[/sp]
fuck i even went in relatively blind
time to get VLR

You too? I bought it yesterday and played through three out of five endings. I enjoyed it, as depressing as it was at certain points. I'm looking forward to the upcoming DLC.
Shame. Thought "Visual Novels" would have included something other than exclusively Anime.

Considering the concept itself comes from the land of anime, it's to be expected.
Truth be told it shouldn't bother anyone.

I don't really see how someone can possibly be bothered by an artstyle.
I don't really see how someone can possibly be bothered by an artstyle.
There are a lot of tropes associated with anime, You can't deny that a large number of these novels are romcoms and porn.
I don't really see how someone can possibly be bothered by an artstyle.
It's more than an art style; I'm not getting into this lol. In the recent past I read Watchmen and I recall some others from when I was much younger, none of which were anime, all of which were visual novels (aka really big comic books). I suppose a "comic book thread" might be more what I'm looking for, encompassing pretty much all non-Asian visual novels.

You might be confused, Comics aren't visual novels. Visual novels look like this

There is one background to represent an area and a few sprites to represent a character and their different expressions. The textbox will show dialogue and describe things to you like a regular book.
Several comic book threads were started in GD but they were all very inactive.
Watchmen is a graphic novel not a visual novel IIRC.
And a thread about comics would be in GD, not GGD.
ily that dango avatar is the cutest thing ive seen all day

its not like we want any morons who are held back by tropes or cliches to get into the medium
[editline]a[/editline]
clannad doesnt count tho clannad is just fuckin ugly lest you inject crushed concentrated anime straight into your corneas
Watchmen is a graphic novel not a visual novel IIRC.
Ohhh, just googled visual novel. This is just a definition error on my part, woops. Thought the "visual" part was merely a description of a work, not a part of a solidly defined term.
[editline]27th December 2012[/editline]
oh fuck this is GGD, these are games
aaaaaaaa
its not like we want any morons who are held back by tropes or cliches to get into the medium

Don't worry, Those guys who are too held back by tropes and cliches to see something fresh aren't playing the games, They're in japan making the games.
i think we can all agree the genre needs a little mroe idolm@ster
