The Visual Novel Megathread: Reading till your eyes bleed

Phoenix Wright games were counted as visual novels, right?
Just started playing the first one and goddamn, is it good.
So I just finished Aeka's ending in YMK
[sp]I really thought they were going to kill Antoinette, which I didn't really like but that bitch deserved it. [/sp]
I heard the Student Council girl was boring so I don't think I'll do that route.
Why don't you play it yourself before forming an opinion.
I found it to be quite interesting to [sp]take drugs, strangle-fuck her, then leap out of a window.[/sp]

Sounds like I'll have to play her route after all. Skipped it at first because her route looked boring as shit.
So I was thinking of getting a friend of mine (and me) a Steins;Gate shirt, but since the official ones would cost 50 bucks if you'd include shipping, that seemed a bit much. So what I was thinking, is I'd make a custom one using
[t]http://i.imgur.com/ZsGvI.png[/t]
on the front and getting 'El Psy Congroo' on the back. Thing is, that divergence number is a different black than the shirt, and I'm not sure how to fix it without messing up the image. Would there be a better (and big enough) image of the S;G divergence number available or does anyone have suggestions on how to fix my current image?
You know, you could just change the contrast on the image until the colors match or you could just feather the edges of the image so that it transitions from one shade of black to the other.

Thanks, I'll see if those work.
Half-way through the first Phoenix Wright game and I've come to a conclusion as to why I like it so much: no huge fucking walls of text. Enough to give the characters personality and to make the story and its mysteries really interesting.
Walls of text don't matter if they are all story. But too often it's just description of the surrounding area or something else I don't give a fuck about.
But yeah, that's just me. Never been to fond of super descriptive novels anyway.
Okay so I decided to do Kirimiya's route. That was actually quite nice.
For those that were interested in freeware VNs, and there were at least a few, try Narcissu and True Remembrance. Both are officially legal to download. They are both short, kinetic novels with no choices, but the quality of the writing is still strong enough to warrant reading. The feels too, naturally.
Narcissu is bundled with the second game, which is also legally free: http://www.neechin.net/narcissu2/140/narcissu-2-download-page This bundled version is much more stable than the standalone release of the first game; they are both identical otherwise.
True Remembrance can be found here: http://trueremembrance.insani.org/get.html
Narcissu in particular is one my most fond visual novels, and I would be really pleased if more people were to read it. It is about two patients in a hospice ward, and their struggle for meaning and fulfillment in a drastically shortened life. It's beautiful, if I may say so myself.
So, after a few months of putting it off, I finally finished G-Senjou No Maou.
Good lord I loved it. Kanon's route was kind of boring though.
I REALLY loved the fact that there was a legitimate anti-hero protagonist for once, and the Yakuza background was definitely a refreshing change. Damn what a roller-coaster.
Can anyone recommend something similar? An intricate plot with good characters and artwork and an anti-hero protagonist?

People generally suggest uh, what was it.
Sharin no Kuni, himawari no shoujo to people who finish G-senjou. Vice versa too.
I didn't enjoy it as much myself, but who knows, maybe you will.
So here's a tidbit of news for all of you who enjoyed the fucking amazing feels of Clannad..
[sp]The official date for[/sp]
[sp]Tomoyo After has been announced. The date is[/sp]

Here's a nice VN recommendation chart for those interested. It is a good point of reference for those new to the genre.
I'd agree for most of it safe for Mon musu quest.
it's not a vn as much as a gross out monster porn slideshow. With Rape. And Vore. :v:
Added it to the OP none the less.
School days site is up

Haha, I agree, but at least that is reflected in its tags. Those should serve as a warning NOT TO PLAY THIS if you are bothered by deviant content.
Has anybody here played Symphonic Rain?
In that chart a few posts before, some vns have the tag "true route" attached
What does that exactly mean? How can one route be more canon than another?

Will there be Japanese version with subtitles?

I think the "true" route is the route that the authors intended to happen, but if you don't like it you still have the option to go for another route. I think the only way they'd be more canon than the others is if there was a sequel where its based off of the true routes ending.
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
Also I started playing Kana, the feels, the FEELS
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
Kana spoilers: [sp]Does Kana ever live in any of the endings? I got the snow ending[/sp]

Depends on the VN.
Cannon routes can be one of the following:
1- The first route, or the one you default in if you do do the wrong choices/make sure that events can't happen. (Clannad with Nagisa for an example, Key Novels usually follows this)
2- The route that is unlocked by completing all the other routes. (Fate Stay/Night's Heaven's Feel for another example)
3- The route that will wield epilogues/fairly longer than the rest/has more importance/Opinions. This is mostly based on the community's opinion more than anything else. I can't think of an example on the spot.
Cannon basically means whichever (like the above user said) endings/path the dev intended the player to follow or experience more than others.
Mass Effect's example is that if you start with Mass Effect 2 or Mass Effect 3, The previous game choices are either chosen in a quick prompt or just chosen for you. This makes it feel like there is a cannon Shepard route.
Will there be Japanese version with subtitles?
You mean for the voices? I'm not following what you're asking.
They are translating all the text into English, so technically that means it's in Japanese with subtitles.

It just has a niche audience.

lol they recommend Yume.
lol they recommend Yume.
about time you got here
[editline]1st June 2012[/editline]
this is like last page lol
That list sucks
Doesn't have "My Girlfriend is the President!".
It seems to be composed of the latest 20 novels translated + the top rated on VNDB.
[editline]2nd June 2012[/editline]
lol they recommend Yume.
^This, even though I liked Yume, recommending it to a "starter" is really stupid.

Prior to Katawa Shoujo, YMK was the "starter", or gateway, VN for English speaking readers. I am not sure how that came to be, but it was definitely the case. You could see it mentioned often in VN threads in different forums of the past. I think one of the devs for KS even cited it specifically as an inspiration.
The list is fine, really. I don't see why the top rated VNs on VNDB would be remiss in a recommendation list. They're all highly regarded, loosely speaking, unlike "My Girlfriend is the President"; except for MGQ. Most of those titles have been translated for a long time now, to be fair.
I know I rant about this a lot but I don't know how anybody could like Yume. The characters are all unlikeable, the art is frankly lack luster, and the plots are just shitty. It was a waste of however long it took me to complete the damn thing back when I read it and has left a sour taste in my mouth ever since. It was my first VN and it seriously put me off the things for years.
I liked nekoko and aeka but holy shit was that student council girl boring

What exactly is the difference between Kinetic Novel and Linear Plot? Don't they mean the same thing?
