Website down?
Yup.
Sorry about the website's downtime! The site will be down for at least a few hours today for server maintenance.
A core team member has had multiple passwords compromised, one of which was a server password. This user has super user level access to the server. There's currently no indication through logs or otherwise that the server was accessed, but in the interest of security we're treating this as a full breach.

Yup.
Please leak the game
Please leak the game
That would be horrible for the developer.
That would be horrible for the developer.
Terraria got leaked and that didn't end up being so bad for the devs
Terraria got leaked and that didn't end up being so bad for the devs
Didn't it get released early or something because it got leaked? I can't remember exactly what happened.
Didn't it get released early or something because it got leaked? I can't remember exactly what happened.
apparently they had to release early to try and not lose all their sales to the leak, but that sort of became the excuse as to why so many things were half-assed like why we never got steam servers
Make him an Ape so he can have a white beard.
[editline]oh hamburgers[/editline]
Or I might be thinking of Ahab. I've never read Moby Dick.
Ishmael was the dude who stood around and narrated everything Ahab did like some creepy stalker, and Ahab was the crazy guy who put the team together in the first place

The leak was really awful and barebones though. I think they would've been safe with staying in development for a bit longer.
i only bought terraria because i really liked the leak
Was there more than one leak or something? The one I played had basically nothing in it, just a big terrain with nothing in it that you could kind of dig in.
Was there more than one leak or something? The one I played had basically nothing in it, just a big terrain with nothing in it that you could kind of dig in.
Yeah, there were two.
One which was just showing off a small amount of features, the engine basically.
And the other one with a lot of features implented.
i only bought terraria because i really liked the leak
Yeah pretty much this, I was on the fence until I tried the leak with the features. shit was cool.
knowing the leak was incomplete, i saw a lot of potential in terraria and couldn't wait till the full release was ready. its like watching the vids for cube world, it looks so fantastic but knowing its still incomplete, i see that just sucking up money like a sub-space tear in the universe of indie development.
starbound is well on its way of making terraria just another name in everyone's list of steam games.
Ishmael was the dude who stood around and narrated everything Ahab did like some creepy stalker, and Ahab was the crazy guy who put the team together in the first place
Well technically it was the captains Peleg and Bildad, owners of the ship, who assembled the crew. They don't actually sail on it, just basically rent it out to people to make money.
Not that it really matters. But I had a professor who was pretty much this book's #1 fan and I inadvertently retained a bunch of useless information like this. I read every page of that book.
Except the "Cetology" chapter. fuk dat chapter

Ah, I must've only played the super early one then. That came out, everyone laughed at it, and I put it out of my mind. Then the full game came out and I bought it on a sale due to friend recommendations, and it turned out to be pretty great.

Pretty great?
One of the greatest games I've ever played.
Alright that's just my opinion.. I'm sorry.

I don't see a reason to apologize for an opinion like that. I enjoyed Terraria immensely, and I'm REALLY hyped for Starbound.
Terraria was awesome, yet it didn't have replayability.

Besides the updates.

I would say it had some replayability, but not nearly as much as a game like this should have, it got frustrating starting fresh and having to get all of that equipment again, especially when some items are down to luck, like the mirrors and hermes boots.
Or farming for souls, holy shit that was a hassle
Yeah I pretty much felt like I was done with Terraria after beating the hardest bosses. I could have spent more time getting the very best equipment, but then I can't really do anything but beat the hardest bosses faster than last time.
I never thought I'd say this, but it would probably have more replay value if they'd put more emphasis on the construction aspect, like Minecraft. At release, I thought Terraria would be infinitely better, since Minecraft really needed more objectives to accomplish and better action, but it ended up resulting in a game that felt like it could be "finished" instead of feeling like a real sandbox.
I think it would have been better if they'd had more collectible-type items, like those statues that got patched in eventually. It's fun to collect shit and use it to decorate your house, kind of like an action-based Animal Crossing. That's one of my favorite aspects of the new Elder Scrolls and Fallout games too. I also liked how construction actually had a point in Terraria, i.e. getting NPCs to move in, so hopefully Starbound takes it even further than that. Like adding shit to buildings to help the merchants have better inventory, or having some benefit to amassing a huge population of other citizens.
Maybe some of this stuff is already confirmed, I don't know, I'm not following the development very closely.
You're in luck loofiloo, there's a lot of neat collectible crap they've already shown, they've also confirmed a lot of items will be intractable, and everything will be inspectable with a little bit of flavor text. Plus building is far more streamlined compared to terraria, so building will be faster and more fun. I feel Terraria was a step in the right direction and Starbound will be the one to push those boundaries even further.
Honestly, Terraria didn't hold my attention too much, but this game seems more up my alley. Even if I didn't like Terraria too much, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't super hyped for this.

That's good to know. Even in those times where I actually wanted to get into construction in Terraria, it felt like kind of a pain in the ass since you can only place tiles in a very small radius around your character. I guess this keeps things from being too easy in the cave-exploring parts (actually requiring some planning and thinking) but it was really cumbersome if you wanted to build anything creative rather than practical.
I think they had an item or two that increases your building radius, but I sure as hell didn't want to dedicate an inventory slot to that... Or switch it out when I stopped adventuring and started building.
The most fun I had with Terraria was writing my own hacks. Also playing with that one guy with a massive ego who's perma'd now, J-something or other. We both had invincibility hacks and ran around with Skeletron heads on top of us.

I'm not sure if you've seen this or not but
http://youtu.be/cU56Kh731Q0 this is the building demo, note how far they can reach, plus they can place up to four blocks at a time by holding shift.
I didn't embed it seeing as most of us have seen this, but it's well worth a watch
I hope it won't be that easy building that fast. In the sense, that it takes time for you to get the resources to build everything. I find one of the best parts of building is the ability to add little bits over time.

Mining will probably be streamlined a bit, maybe we'll get rid of the "one block at a time" thing from Minecraft/Terraria, which was especially tedious in the latter, in favor of an area that's mined out. Kinda like the fishaxe, only more balanced.
I think one of the earlier logs mentioned prefabricates, so you don't have to build stuff from the ground up if you don't feel like it.

They had two building items, one applied a grid effect to the map so you could estimate distances and one increased your item placement distance by 1 block. Both expensive, both not very worth it - especially by the time you get to them.
they can be useful when building some very complex and massive structures though, when used with the GPS you could estimate more accuratley where you are and how high if you need to know it for what your building.
but otherwise yeah, not very useful. though i did get bonus to movement speed on all 3 of those things. seemed like the best mod they could have at the time.

Well that's confirmed, he also stated that the beta won't have the space station
