That's why you build the outside out of obsidian. It has the highest explosion resistance in the game.

But you shouldn't be forced to build out of a certain material out of fear that a random dick headed enemy would come and ruin it.
between clowns and creepers, anything that can explode your hard work is the most annoying enemy in any game.
I also think clowns don't appear unless if you kill a certain amount of enemies during the blood moon, but they're probably rare
I think that we can all agree that clowns are literally the worst no matter what game you're playing

You don't. You should have a base in the air if you're in hard mode anyway. Otherwise wraiths will get in and kill everyone.

That pretty much ruined the game for me right there, not being able to build above a certain point anymore because Wyverns appear.

Wyverns were total nightmares when hard mode first came in.
And by that I mean their spawn zones were so low on small worlds, if you jumped you'd have ten of the fuckers flying up your ass.
Anyone know what language/framework this is programmed with? I believe Terraria was C# and XNA which made ports to anything other than Xbox 360 difficult, but I hope this is something more portable - I'd love to see this branch out to other platforms.

I hope not.
Games just start to melt when they're exposed to the console masses.. like minecraft for instance. It was reasonably OK when it was solely on PC, but once it leaked over to XBLA, the sky started to burn.

Well one, you shouldn't build that high. Two, if you're playing on a small world for some reason, you can just dig out an area and have it floating.
