It's not a big surprise, the steam entry that is. They did they are going to be on Steam, skipping greenlight. It also appeared around the same time people found Halo 3, Saints Row 4 and other crazy entries in the steam db.
Besides, they did say the beta is soon.

seeing as how terraria was on steam before greenlight i'm guessing starbound is gonna skip greenlight too

I think it only affects the armor you have and can craft at the start.. Different race armors have different benefits, such as jumping/swimming/gliding.
It'd be cool the see the robot build himself. Goes from a pair of moving arms, and build up his body, screw on his head, etc.
