Notch is hardly a lazy moron.
Sure, minecraft is far from a finished game, but you make it sound like he didn't put any work into the game.
When Minecraft was released I just got the "Wasn't finished" vibe from it.

I don't think it really could be finished because really a well defined goal. I love vacation jokes as much as anybody I don't really blame Notch, I he was a hobby coder not cut out for the expectations that kind of success brings.

Notch has worked on multiple web based games in the past if I recall correctly. It's not quite the same as professional game developing like most of us think of it but it's definitely closer to professional developing than hobby coding.

Yeah he worked on Wurm Online prior to minecraft.
What were you doing, carrying 8 gold coins?
Yes, monorails indeed. I want to build a SRS ATMSPHERE rail system, similar to that of Dead Space's tramstation.
i was carrying 16 gold coins
i had just got them from a chest and i was on multiplayer as the host.
i couldn't teleport back to spawn or else the server would have crashed.

Looks like another gameplay video coming soon.
Texture packs. Make this happen.
Texture packs. Make this happen.
that would be pretty great
fix that god awful sand/dirt
i think you should make better trees
i think you should make better trees
I think you should make a greater effort at grammar.
i think you should make better trees
I hadn't realized that the maker of the game was in our presence.
[sp]He isn't[/sp]
Every planet is different; that sand/dirt isn't the definitive sand/dirt
i know that. but still, the current textures for sand/dirt are terrible.
Note in the dungeon generation screenshot thread the character's dual wielding a sword and gun, I just love how you can see what players are wielding. That's awesome

Just found out about the game today. I'll definitely follow its development from here on out. I had a question about the gameplay, though: is there actually any space movement or combat, or do you just move between Terraria-like planets by going to and from your space station via dropships?

The latter, unfortunately.
I dunno, would having elements of space sims and space battles detract from the main experience, or would it add more cool stuff? Personally i'd like to do a bit of space-fighting and space-based micro in between planetary adventures, since i'm quite enjoying Space Pirates & Zombies (& Bounty Hunters) at the moment. Maybe if it would work, then perhaps the devs could add the masses of space stuff as an expansion pack?

Yes, but they're working on this for a whole year after it's released, and it's one of the ideas they've taken interest in putting into the game later.
The game will be far from "done" when it's released, so expect loads of new stuff if they live up to their word - the whole dev team will work on the game for a whole year, then assign a smaller team to work on it for the rest of time, with Tiy still monitoring what they do so it's not like they can ruin it or anything.
Anyway, among my favorite post-release features is basically a mode that let's you play god.
Oh god that director mode sounds perfect.

Anyone actually want to play that game?
Haven't played it in ages.

This is a very good thing to hear. Only thing to do is wait I guess.
i can imagine a shadow of israphel like lets play of this.
like two guys are playing and all of a sudden like 20 directors come in and make a decent story
So..wait. If there's a director mode in multiplayer, why waste time doing stuff when you could just basically get everything from a Director RIGHT off the bat? I could see an inventory system working like Terraria destined to fail if this happens, unless if Director mode disables cross-server saving for that character and makes a separate file in the server for that character.
