So, Human, Avian, Apex and plant people. Wonder how many other races there could be, and whether or not there are any really differences between them save for aesthetics?

Many of the "third gender" instances are just people with one sex identifying as the other gender. I don't see why you needed to get all uppity about what he said considering it was, in nearly all situations, a correct statement.

There's people who feel like they're neither male nor female or that feel they are both at once. It can get really complicated. I don't think there's really enough demand to include more than the usual male or female because of that though. In most cases I think they could just use male or female just fine.

Which is honestly more work than it's worth. Plus in games it generally defines the general shape of the character, how would this third gender appear? It's hard to define then because you then face an ever smaller growing appeal percent base because the idea the game devs have may not be as these third gender people see them selves.

Hopefully one of the last two races is really cool. Lizardman, catman, or dogman. Would be pretty awesome.

It's only a small portion of the transgender community who see themselves that way and the transgender community is already only a small portion of the general community anyways. And yes, it would be rather difficult to define them since there is no physical third sex that we're aware of, just the mental third genders. Technically a third gender person who believes they're both male and female would be very androgynous. While a third gender person who believes they're neither male nor female would be neither masculine nor feminine in appearance. It's rather difficult to give a separate gender for those, especially in a form that's going to be rather undetailed and pixellated.

Kinda sad there's no gameplay differences, but I can see why they didn't do it

Also if there's any dialogue in Starbound, different races could have "special" dialogue options, like an Apex voicing their scientific opinion, or an Avian expressing their disgust for the violation of a sacred temple; it'd add a bit more character.
