Okay as long as you drop the CLANG.
Besides more games need fun tools like this. Terraria's hookshot was okay but because it only yanked you straight towards things it was kinda limited in utility.
Here's a question for you guys: Stomp boots, or double jump boots
Double jump boots, definately, unless stomp boots would let you jump higher. Even then, I'd rather have a second jump that I can activate whenever I want than boots that I need to attack an enemy with to activate.

yes i actually do semi-agree with the whole point though, making some sort of swinging utility would be cool but it doesn't need to be ridiculously all over the place
[editline]19th October 2012[/editline]
just more mobility tools in general, to be honest.
If some sort of grapple was put in, I think it should also be usable on enemies too. Naturally, smaller ones could be pulled towards you, while larger/giant ones would take minor damage and act as a grapple-able surface. Heavy armor/a shell/etc would cause it to plink away harmlessly.
While holding E, Holding W restracts the grapple's chain, Pulling you closer to the grapple position.
While holding E, Holding S increases the length of the grapple's chain, allowing for a further swing distance, or can be used for decending.
Maybe it's just me but that seems like it would be a little bit annoying to do since W, E, and S are all right next to each other with W and S being directly above/below one another.

Index finger on E, middle finger on W/S.
What's annoying?
With the way I keep my hand on my keyboard, I'd have an easier time hitting W and 2 than W and S while holding E.
Not to mention you can't swing right, as your index is likely on the E, and can't hit D easily. It should be V, B, N or something else your thumb can use, or remove the holding key completely and make it toggle.

If your index is on E, whats preventing you from pressing D with it aswell?

Maybe my keyboard is really advanced, but I'm trying it now, and the controls seem pretty flawless.
Perhaps? Hold E with index, press W/S with middle finger?

You'd need to get really low on E in order to hit D or bend the last digit of the index finger to a point where it's painful with painful.
[editline]oh hamburgers[/editline]
Painful with painful.
If your index is on E, whats preventing you from pressing D with it aswell?
Kinda hard to hit D without letting go of E first.
If your index is on E, whats preventing you from pressing D with it aswell?
the fact that doing that is incredibly awkward

I don't see what the issue is, I'm trying it now and it's not uncomfortable at all.

Maybe my fingers are unique, but I don't feel any strain from doing that.
it's not strain or painful it's just awkward and unreliable
Wait, why are we talking about holding E anyway? Why not just do the logical thing and have it on toggle?
Y'know, an alternative to having to hold E would be maybe using Mouse Wheel, since most people use mice with mousewheels nowadays, right? I mean, it's pretty easy to buy a mouse that has a wheel in it, isn't it? Feels more "authentic" than holding E and pressing W or S at any rate.
we should discuss robots
we should discuss robots
and how they clang
Why not make it simple, and have shift buttons that do different functions?
Left-MB for main weapon / tool
Shift-Left-MB for grappling hook
Another idea is to replace the jump button with the grappling hook while in mid air. Replacing the jump button in mid-air seems like the most useful way of doing it without having to replace much, or have awkward controls.
If you have a double jump item, then you have to use up your double jump when you use the grappling hook, but you recover it when you release it.
this whole control discussion seems moot. chances are controls will be changeable along the line after its release anyway.
and im sure someone will use a kinect so they can flail around to use their melee weps.

Ah we're just talking about the controls seeing as there isn't much else we can discuss right now.
Also I don't know about you guys but I'm going to stick with wielding one handed weapons so I can use a shield with them

starbound

Oh man I always wanted a walking chainsaw.
I'd rather a swinging grapple hook then a terraria style one.
Oh man that'd be so awesome; like Indiana Jones with his Whip. Maybe there could be space for a Hook and a Whip in the game, then later have the tech to combine the two, kind of like how Terraria had Hermes Boots and Rocket Boots, which could later be crafted together to yield Spectre Boots.

This actually sounds like a good idea.
