This is because 6 legs is inefficient for large creatures because it creates alot of heat so insects that large would evolve to lose their middle pair of legs, like an appendix

Someone needs to tell this to the creature designers for the movie Avatar.
Pretty much every single creature in that movie had an extra set of arms or legs. Pissed me off so much. It's not unique if you do it to every creature.

it's like that on earth too.
most creatures have only 4 appendages, so they actually did do something realistic.
we also know that it has lower gravity. (i know this because of the VERY large flying reptiles and the "hallelujah mountains". plus the atmosphere is different which could affect cooling as well.
all in all it did work for all intents and purposes.
