Well I'm referring to being able to mine background blocks, which means we'll see the resources in the background as well, which means this game could actually encourage making effective strip mining operations.
Or just saying "fuck it" and blowing it all up and sweeping up what's left over :v:
I did this in terraria like fucking mad.
After I obtained an adamantite drill or a hamdrax, I'd dig a hole straight down to the netherworld.
After reaching hell, teleport back to the surface, move one block over, and repeat as necessary.
I called it the Sin Pit. :v:
And goddamn it, I used to have a picture of a tunnel that was 20 blocks across and went straight into Hell. Must have deleted it :c
Terraria was awesome while it lasted, to bad they stopped updating it.
I dreamt of Starbound last night.
I was building a fort and was trying to put a picture of an Apex on the wall, but it kept shrinking from the size I wanted until I got pissed off at it and decided to just cover the entire house in toilets.

Starbound was nominated as "The most anticipated indie game of 2012"
http://www.indiegamemag.com/igm-awards-2012-vote/
There's indie games this year other than Starbound??
To be honest though, there's really just Starbound that I could name off the top of my head. I know there's some other decent ones but I couldn't for the life of me tell you what they are right now.
Why is Minecraft up for indie game of the year? Didn't it come out last year?
Why is Minecraft up for indie game of the year? Didn't it come out last year?
Minecraft is probably up there because it was released on the X360 this year.
To be honest I was the first person in my collective group of friends to buy terraria, and only a few people bought it shortly after.
After the steam sales, each and every one of my friends in our group owns the game, and we've all clocked a few hours into it with each other, and honestly it's way better that way.
The only problem I have with it is looking at it now... it's missing something.
It feels like honestly, "lets make a 2d minecraft". It feels so uninspired. The last two big updates were a huge improvement, and I guess I was a bit naive for expecting them to update it forever.
I'm really glad Starbound is keeping that "terrarria" type look and feel to it, I enjoyed it a lot. Now with the SMORGASBORD of new things included hopefully it will lack that "lacking feeling" I had with Terraria.
Starbound thread is worth my 1000th post! thats how good the game is going to be!

Update it forever? Shit, they only updated it for about a year. Routinely anyway.
I'm buying Starbound for myself and every one of my Steam-Bros
I seriously don't get people who call Terraria "2D Minecraft", it has several bosses (Minecraft had none at Terraria's release), a vast array of different items and "themes", and generally a different feel than Minecraft has. I love both games, but I honestly don't see them as being that similar.

Obviously Minecraft invented block based games.

Technically Minecraft is an Infiniminer clone.
Yeah I know nofunallowed and so on

It was more like a creative DIY Castlevania SOTN to me.
It did seem like an open-world Metroidvania style of game, even with building and mining elements. Upon retrospect, however, the mining aspect didn't feel as "engaging" to me as Minecraft's mining did, even if one could see the ores easier than in Minecraft; maybe it was the lack of a durability system that made the harvesting seem more monotonous, since you weren't needing an eye on your items to make sure they didn't break, which detracted from the survivalist feel about these kinda games that I appreciate.
I might sound loopy for saying this, but I kinda like Minecraft's durability thing; it means that the monotony of continuous block-breaking is broken up by managing your equipment on the fly, mashing together barely-functional picks to conserve the Iron you spent in making them, with the CHLUNK! of a pick breaking prompting me to say "DOGGAMNIT" or "Sonofa-", not to mention when my Inventory fills up with Cobble and I trek back to my treefort to drop it off in my chests (I need all that Cobble for building safe bridges over an ocean of lava as I search for the abandoned Fortresses in which the secrets of the alchemical sciences lie).
Personally, I'm hoping Starbound's mining elements are a bit more engaging, with equipment management and repairs being an important part of acquiring subterranean resources.

did you honestly not notice the sarcasm in his post?
It was more like a creative DIY Castlevania SOTN to me.
This is more or less how it felt to me. Speaking of which, a massive Castlevania (actual Castlevania style and everything, or maybe even Metroid) sort of game like Terraria which could be played multiplayer sounds like it would be really awesome.

Apparently not.

Honestly, it looks like a pretty bleh hat. Will probably be shipped into the game simply because of the animation made for it.

Well I thought it was neat. Though it pales in comparison to the others I've seen.

it was a neat intro but the hat itself is kinda dumb looking

It could be a giant wobbly cock taped onto your players forehead for all I care, the only thing I just absolutely will not be able to tolerate is if these fucking idiots that keep making le me-me requests get their "idea" added.

There's a frightening amount of those retards on the forums too, there's been times I've cringed so hard reading them I'm pretty sure I pulled something
I hope the developers dont give in to their requests, but keeps the game free of memefaces and furry shit

They seem to know better than that, at least they SEEM to. Guess we won't find out til it comes out.

If they plan on implementing modding support, just let those groups cater to their own tastes through mods. It'd be nice if the devs tried to avoid catering to any specific group.

All I can think is that someone's been having too much fun being influenced by MSPA esque animation. I mean, that text shit is almost ripped straight from it.

Eerily similar to minecraft's autistic forum lurkers, we ought to just put them into their own little sub-forum and let them live their lives there. Look it even has a grocery store.
as jesus becomes a findable character.
I think that'd actually be kind of awesome.
A randomly generated planet with a 0.1% chance to appear
would be a refurbished texture pack of the hallow from terraria
It would have butterflies and flowers and shit
And finding Jesus and talking to him would reward you a crown of thorns hat.
no jesus is a boss fight
