I just can't get over how stupid the pokemon are in the newer generations. I heard that one of them was garbage. ACTUAL GARBAGE! It seems as though they ran out of ideas.
I thought the third generation was an abomination because of Team Rocket's disappearance, bad pokemon, and just not really anything as epic as the first and second generation stuff.
Second generation is the most fun games, first generation was the best TV series of them all, and the third had alot of game improvements, but it wasn't really good...
My opinion on the ratings:
First generation - 9/10 Balance issues; makes up for in nostalgia.
Second generation - 10/10 perfect
Third generation - 4/10 Too much change, shiny stat bonus removed, not enough cool pokemon, just terrible really, but I have to say some of the new features were awesome.
Fourth - Didn't play, but from what I've seen of it 7/10 -small recovery from third
Fifth - 0/10 Shouldn't exist. Kill it with fire.
This is only my opinion, don't rate me dumb just because I don't like your snivies or mudkips.
This thread is for people who have an interest in pokemon and still play the games, be it old/new/spin offs. And I might even say "pokeculture" with all the art/trading/battling/stories in this thread as well.
This isn't the place to just rant about how the newer generations suck/how good the older ones were. If this is all you intend to do then just leave.
you've got to admit, every gen had some strange pokemon

You don't give any decent reasons for why the third and fifth generations were so "terrible."
And "too much change?"
wat
I don't like that image that gets posted every time this discussion happens - the one comparing Gen I to Gen V - because it doesn't address any of the actual complaints that were being made about the Pokemon designs in Gen V (and Gens III and IV, for that matter).
Edit: Posted below by someone.
the only gen that i dont like that much is gen 4
and yet there are some of my favorite pokes in there
im not very used to gen 5 though but looks good to me
So, uh, I just started posting in this thread, how often do you get "Quality" people like Mister Space1 in this thread?
not often
Yes, surprisingly not often. Although when a new thread pops up it generally within the first 5 pages for some reason.
Welp, I'll take your word for it.
I'll never understand people with permanently self-welded nostalgia goggles for two franchises, Pokemon and Zelda.

?
i have to ask how biased we are as fans of the culture that is Pokemon...
Not biased, were informed.
Well, ignoring the man with the rose tinted beer-goggles, I am in need of some advice.
Having finally retrieved my copy of Black, I have gotten back into the competitive aspect of Pokemon. One of the mons that I was working on breeding and training was an Umbreon. I know the general IV/EV spread that I am going for, but I am NOT content with the "standardized" moveset that Smogon has provided me.
I have been very successful with using Sucker Punch during online matches, so I would like to keep that in there if there is an option. Otherwise, I guess you guys can tell me just how fantastic and well thought-out the Smogon moveset is, and explain your reasons why I should not deviate from the norm.

Shinies caused lower stats you tart.
Gen 1/2 people like me really have a disadvantage when it comes to competitive play, we're used to simpler "Train, evolve, play" gameplay. No knowledge re: any of this EV or breeding or nature stuff.

Sucker Punch is a great move, but not really for Umbreon. It's for catching faster sweepers that would OHKO you usually. Umbreon isn't gonna be OHKO'd any time soon. Also, Umbreon's pitiful attack stat would have to be buffed by something. Only attack plus thing it gets is Curse, really. Lower speed would make Sucker Punch a more enticing option but Payback strikes me as more reliable.
Anyone wanna battle? I have Pokemon Black and stuff. I wanna see if either of my teams can do any good.

Well, if by "quality", you mean people who don't criticize other generations for being marginally different, there's me and Salty and some others here and there.

To be fair gen 1 had EVs.
And they were broken too.
I never really focused on EV's until about two years ago. I hardly battle anyone over wifi. = \

Then don't play Wi-Fi and play your Pokemon game how you like

smogon analyses are only guidelines and you should only ever use them as that.
They're usually pretty good, but if you find something that works better, or run your own twist on a mvoeset, that's FINE. Inf act I'd say that's better, if you use cookie cutter smogon strategies you're making your team more predictable, less interesting, unfun to play and simply removing creativity from team building.
The most important thing when designing a team is that it works together, not that it has the "best" moveset. Smogon's movesets are usually a good starting point when looking at a pokemon to see what it can do effectively, but if you're really serious about using something, always check the pokemons entire moveset and look for things that your team needs or you think are useful/interesting.
For example, smogon strongly dislikes curse on ghost types, I run curse on my dusclops despite this.
Why?
The alternative is either protect or toxic, since he's already bulky as fuck and is running will-o-wisp I find those redundant, besides that he's bulky enough to take a massive hit even after sacrificing half his health with curse, not to mention how well curse->pain split works against high hp foes (blissey gets ripped apart by it) it forces switches (which is great when my entry hazards are up), and if they switch it gives me a turn to set up gravity (which the rest of my team relies on) or switch in some other poke.
None of the smogon sets have will-o-wisp pain split gravity curse, but it works damn well for me.
I wish I had wi-fi. I would battle with you guys whenever I could.
I wish i had my DS back it's been missing for a good year now...I have money to go buy one but i'm not sure if i should just get a nice new DSi cheap or get a 3DS for future proofing...

Pokemon Online, bro.
Alright, thanks for the advice. I think I'll stick closer to the moveset that I already use, but I'll take in your guys' advice:
Sucker Punch/Payback
Moonlight
Protect/Curse
Last Resort/Toxic
Also, what item do you think I should use? I have had some success with Bright Powder, but I think there might be an item better suited for this mon. Maybe a berry to reduce damage from a Fighting move? Hmm...
Seismitoad makes a good Tank.

Also, I keep missing your requests to battle. Probably because you seem to ask whenever I am asleep.
Which is kind of odd, seeing as you live in the same timezone that I do, unless you sleep during the day or something.
seismitoad is an undesirable pokemon imo
