In fairness, they did add one of the most useful features, instant bag organisation when pressing Start. I never actually used the PC item storage except to get a free potion.
I dump all my evo stones and held items I don't plan to ever use in there.
In fact most of the time in gen3/4 my inventory is:
Revive x 100
Hyper Potion x 100
Ultra Balls x 100+
Dusk Balls x 100+
Master Ball
Full Heal x 100
Escape Rope x 100
TMs
Key Items
etc.

Tepig is probably the most efficient for going through the 8 gyms. I don't know how he fares in the competitive scene though.
