I liked using the level editors for Wolfenstein 3D, since if you had any knowledge of Paint you could make levels.
C&C Generals editor isn't too shabby.
garrys mo
That isn't a map editor, smart one, it's a game/mod.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater level editors were awesome and I still make levels ever now and then. Out of them all I'd have to say THUG1's level editor was the best. American Wasteland was pretty good too.
LittleBigPlanet is fucking incredible for level creation
I think that the Far Cry Instincts series had one of the simplest and most fun editors to use around
on the surface it was astonishingly simple but once you got into it you could make some amazing stuff

God, I loved that game so much.
I've got a thread on Far Cry Instincts if you want to see it, OP.

I really love the CryEngine 2 Sandbox and it's the one I've used the most. However, it has to be said that the Far Cry 2 editor was brilliant in its simplicity. You could make some stunning stuff with it with just a little imagination. Shame that the multiplayer is pretty much dead and as such there's little to no recognition for making maps for it. I've seen some amazing stuff being done with it, but I like mine quite a lot too.

It's a shame TF2 doesn't have a mapmaker system like Timesplitters. The modular system would work quite well, especially for the indoor environments.
Oh, and Kodu for the xbox 360 (and PC, but it's not a very good port at the moment).
Far Cry 2 had an excellent editor, sadly, there weren't many props in it, and making maps with unique indoor areas was hard.
I heard Ubisoft was planning to release a model pack for the editor, don't know if they ever did though.
As far as games with built in editors, not external programs like Hammer or UnrealEd, I'd have to say Arma 2 is one of the best.
Trackmania's editor is fun to mess with too.
Tribes 2 had an interesting one, where you could scale any object while playing, with very glitchy results.
The Dawn of War and Timesplitters map editor. I've made so many maps with those.
Cryengine sandbox is good too, even if all I've done is spawn houses and shoot at them with nukes. :v:
timesplitters editor.
Sauerbraten has one of the coolest in-game editors I've seen. You can press e and start editing the very map you're playing right away.
I would love to make a Company of Heroes map for skirmish

You know what an even bigger shame? The fact they refused to let people make mods for the game cuase they closed all the resources off. Just try and find a mod for Far Cry 2, you cant.

This, if you have not tried Saurbraten's editor, you are missing out on one of the best editors on this planet.

The game is pretty much Unreal Tournament in gameplay though. Obstacle Courses and Slide maps are really fun to make.

I love Hammer, though I agree that it feels outdated and somewhat clunky to use.
Though as opposed to other editors, you can really do some precision stuff.

THANK YOU
I was bout to ask for a free map maker.
Hammer is like the AutoCAD of level design...Although I think they're making a step in the right direction with the .vmf export plugin for Sketchup.
Far Cry 2's was awesome and fun for me to use...my friends and brother who heavily played the game kept complimenting my detail as that of Ubisoft's.
Little Big Planet is just SOOOOOO MUCH fun to toy with...flying around in a rocket boot never gets old.
ModNation Racers' level editor is easy and I love it, just the fact you can set up the terrain and then just drive the course through the land, and its really easy to use.
I like Empire Earth's editor. That was some fun shit, putting 6000 stone throwers against a large mechanized robot. The terrain editing wasn't that in depth but it was okay for it's time.
The Trials HD Level Editor was amazing.
Just played Trials HD Editor yesterday, its great but it's not something I can really get into.
GECK is one of the hardest things to learn in pretty much any map maker.
Haha, are you serious?
That things probably one of the easiest and powerful editor's i've ever used.
Hasn't anyone mentioned the Starcraft/Warcraft map editors? I loved the trigger system on those and how creative some map editors would have to be to create new gamemodes and stuff. Was really simple to pick up and learn, while still being potentially very powerful.
You should try unreal development kit. Pretty easy to learn altough it has a lot of content for example unrealed the editor itself, kismet a node based scripting thingy and a material editor. Linky http://www.udk.com/
Also it's easy to import custom models, textures and sound files.
Noone has said Men of War? This cannot be.
GEM Editor it is.
Picture rape incoming, maps i've made with it.
