Are you going to add any fancy shaders like SSAO?
They where experimenting with AO but it looked terrible and wouldn't of worked too well because Source has too small of a z buffer, although I don't know if they worked something else out. since that was before the move to the Alien Swarm engine IIRC.

Source can't handle AO at all in real time, unless the Alien Swarm Engine or later is better at it.
However, I think a cool feature to add would be the screen effect from left 4 dead when you use pills, and make it so that effect happens when you pick up a medkit
I plan to have something like the full body awareness in Dark Messiah: Might and Magic.
Awesome, I always wanted that in HL2
Some body awareness would work wonders for HL2. Hands on the steering in the Buggy/Airboat, legs when you look down, animations for climbing ladders. It would be wonderful.
I disagree. Part of the reason is;
a)Gordon climbs ladders mush faster then a normal person would, so you'd get weird 'hamster hands' climbing
b)Gordon can also do full 360 degree turns. Whilst holding a shotgun? How would that work?
Another problem is grab and throw. Some objects are different distance from you if you hold it certain way. X number of animations for Y different ways of holding all the props?

Have you not played Dark Messiah?
Have you not played Dark Messiah?
no, please explain how they handle it
You should put this on Moddb so it can gain more attention, just a thought. :v:
since that was before the move to the Alien Swarm engine IIRC.
Actually, that was after we were already on the AS engine. And we now have optional SSAO.

Download the Demo on Steam, you get to see first hand how it works, plus it's pretty darn fun.

I want to have more content, like at least the first level or two done before putting it on ModDB
I'm just gonna point this out:
both gman and breen look like their faces are covered in olive oil
[editline]8th February 2013[/editline]
i know it brings out the high quality of the textures to have those shaders, but it ends up looking wrong, I'd remove it what ever it is.
Barney and Alyx look good

Breen I'm gonna re-do from scratch whenever I can find some white hair and beard textures that look good.
As for G-man, he's the same version of the skin as before, except for the stubble and eyes, nothing has changed. Plus it's at least partly due to the AS engine with its weird lighting and contrast stuff, which will be fixed before the final version, of course.
So, when you get to the point where you start doing the everyday citizens, how will you keep your sanity? The downtrodden, refugee, medic, and rebel facemaps are all slightly different and you've got both males and females to worry about. Seems to me that would take forever.

They're not main characters so they don't need to be 100% accurate.

I'm pretty sure I could hold a shotgun and turn around 360 degrees. Its called turning and moving your feet.

I wonder if we could ask Valve for the original pictures they used, if they're high enough resolution.
my guess is they don't have them anymore
but it's worth asking anyway

While on a ladder?
While on a ladder?
if you had really good balance, or monkey feet
While shooting a shotgun?
Gordon's suit has a built in climbing module that automatically activates when he climbs ladders, allowing him to scale them quickly and jump off at direct angles through use of pressure pistons and modules that exert force against the ladder.
There is no need to animate him climbing ladders super fast because he doesn't; the suit does it for him.
[editline]e[/editline]
there you go, perfect explanation
[editline]e[/editline]
Except when he's in civilian clothes for that one ladder you have to climb in the first chapter. That can go unexplained because fuck it, it isn't really important anyway.

you could always make that one ladder noticably slower and show you his hands climbing it.
Guys, I think it's obvious
The weight of his godly beard causes other objects to attract towards him, because the ladder is fixed he is pulled towards it
This also explains the gravity gun and why he can pick up items by walking near them
Dark Messiah has ladder animations
can i have a video

------\/------
Gmod is shipping higher-res than normal facemaps that I made from Valve's original photos (they provide us with that in the sources)

The photos are usually around 1500x1500

Ok, they're too small to use really then.
The character's new face maps are all 2048^1024 (except for the G-man's)
In terms of modeling I definitely want to model on stuff like the head scarfs you see on some of the black females that are only textured on.
Playing Dear Esther remake, they had moving clouds and waves. That and Alyx having jigglebones physics in her hair would be awesome additions to HL2.

Cry of fear did ladders very well (it doesn't have full body awareness but still). Besides with HL2 ladders its really difficult to get off the ladder without falling when in tight spots.

just press e
Why not just use the Left 4 Dead ladder system? It holsters your weapon and slows your movement speed slightly, while retaining the same level of control as HL2
