Why not just use the Left 4 Dead ladder system? It holsters your weapon and slows your movement speed slightly, while retaining the same level of control as HL2
It may be more "realistic," but it doesn't fit with HL2's gameplay.
L4D's gameplay requires very little use of jumping and platforming of any sort.

Also, what do you think about making variations of Resistance members? It would really differ the rebels a bit.

I had a go at designing most of that equipment and a custom body to go along with it a while back. They're meant to be applied using bodygroups.
Ah, I forgot. I wonder how much progress he has made so far on these? Seeing a rebel with an HECU helmet would make a neat continuity nod.

probably everything related to the whole Source part
[editline]10th February 2013[/editline]
i'm a bit of a beginner myself, but i find setting up the eyes for a Source character really tedious

While I was at it. I decided to sort the rebels into classes.
[t]http://imageshack.us/a/img259/6956/rebelclasses.png[/t]
Light
Uses the USP match, moves at a fast pace, but has low health. Medical variants can be recruited.
Normal
Uses the HK MP7, has standard health and moves at a normal pace. Shotgun variants can be recruited.
Heavy
Uses the OSIPR V952, has high health, but moves slowly. Ammo variants can be recruited.
I think this could make squads a bit more interesting and visually pleasing.

I have no idea.
For Rebels i think what DohEntertainment posted is a good idea, but for the helmets they could have the combine solder helmet for the heavy but have it crudly cut up to remove the mask section and just use it as a normal helmet just to make it bit more lore friendly.
Or just soviet-era helmets from Eastern Europe. Those would probably be easy enough to locate for the rebels.

Maybe even a few Black Mesa Security helmets, seeing as its implied some resistance members were survivors of the resonance cascade.
True, Maybe depending on the amount of work they could use both. I really like lots variety in npc's to me it adds alot of immersion.

What weapons would medics have? I reckon the USP.
Perhaps maybe do a little variety in everything? If I'm not mistaken, the Antlion is the only NPC with multiple skins aside from citizens (but they get very obviously repetitive). It'd be nice not to kill the same zombie dozens of times over in Ravenholm. Combine soldiers could have slight armband or even helmet variants.

Yeah, they're supposed to be variants of resistance member classes that are hard to find.
Heavy is to ammo-man (gives assorted ammunition packs)
Normal is to shotgunner (carries a shotgun)
Light is to medic (can give out medical supplies and revive the player)

Probably because you gave no context at all and people thought you were posting a random HLS picture in the wrong place for no reason.

No HECU / Security helmets. Black Mesa is on the other side of the planet, and on the world scale was a very small place. The likelyhood of finding a helmet from there in Eastern Europe 20 years after humanity's enslavement is about the same as discovering Mayan artifacts in Asia.

Everyone knows it is in Eastern Europe, Russia is in that area in case you didn't realize. The other two potential countries are Ukraine and Bulgaria

Who is to say the resistance didn't smuggle them in?
They've done this with so many weapons and technologies that it isn't too far fetched to assume they took a few old helmets from the military/Black Mesa.

Yeah, as said above it doesn't seem so outlandish to assume that some rebels had held onto helmets/gear from the BMS incident and smuggled it around for 20 years, they are rebels, after all.

But not all of the rebels are from Black Mesa.
But not all of the rebels are from Black Mesa.
There are still some from Black Mesa, though.
There are still some from Black Mesa, though.
If any of the rebels were survivors of the Black Mesa incident, they still wouldn't have any of the crap. The Combine invasion didn't happen immediately after the incident, and honestly if I were a survivor stealing some poor sod's helmet would be the last thing on my list of priorities.
