Here's my island I worked on today. From blank ocean to what you see.
Used the worldpainter tool to get the basics of the island down. Then started working on the south port and adding stone markers for the various houses and little towns dotted around the island, and added a few tombs with loot. And oh yes, at the end of the island there will be a mandatory huge castle.
Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks! I had a bit of problem with world painter, when I started out (seeing it was the first time I used it.) The biome tool is a bit hit and miss. I'd recommend not using any of the transparent brushes, just use solid fill option.
Oh and if you don't want your forest to be literally covered in snow, take off snow smooth and frost option when you come to export to minecraft.
I think I'll just go create more random islands seeing the world painter tool is just about the best thing.
Experimenting with towers and big walls in creative. Going to attempt to rebuild in survival later on.

I'll eventually have it set up with machines and chests. I'll make a docking platform that uses railcraft to carry a power source from my main to recharge the one on the ship.
Quick Update on my new island. For now, I've abandoned the one in my previous pictures and have been working on this. it takes inspiration from the previous one but is more condense.
Unfortunately, now that I'm back at work I can only afford to play minecraft for a few hours a day. So, I build a house a day.

Lumberjack house on the far left, little sailing depot on the left. Big freehouse/inn in the middle, and on the right a town hall-come church with living quarters extension. The tabletop mountain in the background will house the castle overlooking the village.
Working on a giant redstone dispenser. Pick as many or as little items as you want in any order then press purchase, Then the items come out. The purchase button also resets all the options so the next person who uses it won't have to pull a reset lever.

You could always use lillypads to make the top of the water walkable.
You'd need a load of them, though.
Started playing Minecraft again. I began to continue working on my desert village which i have been working on for months. I expanded and have added an Upper Class sector where I am working on a hotel. It will be the largest and tallest building I will have ever built so far.

Each floor has 4 rooms and a restroom. I plan on adding more floors soon, and also a roof with a pool and a restaurant.
everyone except me seems to have extreme dedication. They can get a huge town done in a month while I just fuck around and add a fort one day or fix up a wall the next day or just throw in some tunnels :l

Think big and seek inspiration and you'll feel encouraged to build something that you'll be proud of later on. Like right now, I'm in the Nether for the first time, I'm a building massive ass fortress castle, the entire exterior composed of Obsidian, while the interior will be composed of stone bricks and various decor.
Do whatever you want and use your imagination, like walking into a village, erecting a statue of yourself in the middle of it, building a giant castle next to the village, and proclaiming yourself Dictator of that area. If you're bored enough you'll think of something.

Do what you have the most fun doing. If you really want to build something grand, go for it. If doing a wall every other day is most fun for you, do that then. It's just that a lot here find building grand things fun.

I have that problem as well.
It's a minecraft writer's block.
It's not so much as writer's block as MC-ADD. I can never just go from start to finish on a single area. I'll just zip around the map every so often and just take a look at things, fix up a corner somewhere, add some pathways somewhere else, whatever. I have to finish a Bio Lab, an Ocean Lab, a castlejailfort, the front village, the bridge entrance village, and the underground sector

What I do is go to google images and type in "Minecraft castle/tower/wall/town/city/etc" and find inspiration.
I see something good and say, "Man, I wanna build THAT!" and try it.

I dig a big square quarry like that because if I hunt for stone inside a cavern or ravine, I'll end up getting too distracted by gold/diamond/coal/iron/etc.
I just decided to scrap my desert village. The reason for this is I am now building a much bigger, more realistic one. I plan to make all the areas of the first village, albeit much more large with a more sophisticated design and look. Currently I have just started on the Residential district.
