I think it's by far the weakest of the three, seeing as how the bullet time and the name of the main character is basically the only thing that connects it to the other games. Whoever's writing Max isn't very good at it, since he changed from "Dark, gritty, metaphor-spouting monologue-minded noir detective" to "Foulmouth action hero who has a sarcastic one-liner for every situation in the game."
You can attribute that to the change between developers, but it still strikes me as incredibly lazy. It's like they're not even trying to make it seem like the first two games. It's Max Payne: Grand Theft Redemption edition, minus the freeroam elements of both games.
That being said it's fun, and overall is a pretty good game, it just doesn't feel like 'Max Payne' anymore.
My thoughts exactly. It's an awesome game, but it is not a Max Payne game.
I don't want to know any specifics about the game. I guess you're right about me overreacting, but i've had far too many games spoiled before by offhand comments like
"I didn't see that bit with wheatley coming!"
and
"That stupid fucking kid ruined Mass Effect 3's ending"
which leads to me, for example, anticipating a twist with Wheatley, and anticipating a weird thing with a kid in Mass Effect 3. Both counts I turned out to be right on.
At one point in Max Payne 3, there is a rooftop, and you are on it.
LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYBODY
It's just a shitty part of the game. If anything, be glad I warned you about it. It blindsided me and caught me without painkillers/ammo, and since they weren't providing either, I had to keep dying over and over again until the game literally started giving me health items and ammo whenever I re-started.
It really speaks to the design in this game that the devs give you health items and ammo if you die enough. There's no actual difficulty. There's just the number of times you'll need them to give you painkillers and ammo until you win.
Seriously. They'll give you an infinite amount of painkillers, if you die enough.

Than don't die.
My one major disappointment with the game is [sp]The lack of dream sequences. Could have done some really cool things.
I thought for sure there was going to be one when he passed out on the boat after drinking.[/sp]
Otherwise I thought it was a pretty awesome campaign.
Not quite Max Payne, but definitely fun and action packed.
Would have been very interesting to see where the game would have gone with Sam Lake.
All-in-all, as a big Max Payne fan, I'm happy.
The intro was by far one of my favorite parts for some reason.
Simple, but it hit me seeing Max like that.
Forgot to mention, I picked it up at Futureshop.. Came with a double-sided poster. Max with hair, and Max bald.. Also came with a $20 discount towards GTA V :)

Sam Lake wanted the series to end after 2
If you beat 2 on the hardest difficulty you get the 'good' ending that was supposed to be canon, but Rockstar went ahead and said 'fuck that'.
Also, it really bothered me when Max said [sp]"I had forgiven myself for that whole 'Mona' thing. It was just grief.[/sp]
yeah okay Rockstar just go ahead and [sp]invalidate a big part of the first two games[/sp].
Am I the only one who thinks the writing in this game is really, really bad? Everything is really contrived and the plot is confusing and doesn't really make sense, and each 'twist' is incredibly predictable.
So, just a question. Is it safe to go into this game with limited Max Payne experience? I've played a bit of the first game but not too much. It was awhile back. Never even touched the second game.

They pretty much disregard the existence of the first two games, so yeah, you're good.
I just assumed the flashbacks would come into play or something. I haven't finished 2 but I've beaten the first and a good chunk of the second, I may finish it before I pick up 3.

Absolutely.
Overall though, the story is all new, it's about Max trying to have a new beginning.
There's references here and there to the first games, but nothing of much importance.
I'd personally play the first two games just because they're classics in their own rights.
But you could easily play the game otherwise.
Here's a lil' ole tip to everyone having trouble in MP3 sirvival.
ALWAYS have at least 3 painkillers to pop, 2 for red hot second lifesaving and last one for last stand.
This game is actually a lot like Diehard. Seriously. Swap out Max with Bruce Willis and throw in a couple references to the other movies, and it would be like a new sequel.
Done playing for the night. I'm really struggling to finish this single player. The AI and difficulty is just stupid hard. I've died several times from bullets glitching through walls. It's truly amazing how fast the computer reacts to you rounding a corner or entering a room.
There are times playing this where I just tell myself "this looks pretty awesome", and I've now realized that's the only thing keeping me from finishing the SP. The story is a jumbled mess, twists are boring, and the checkpoint system is horrible. I had to just turn the xbox off tonight due to the constant stream of deaths and re-doing the same area over and over again.
Oh dear lord.
I'm gonna miss Quicksave so much...
I instantly started playing on the hardest difficulty and I'm not finding it to be as hard as I imagined, based on what everyone is saying about the difficulty so far. The Last Man Standing feature makes it pretty easy.
And when I do get to a part where I keep dying quite a bit, I don't seem to get bored of it because I keep tackling the challenge in a different way and the gunfights end up being dynamic and exciting every single time.
Call me a pussy, but after beating Max Payne 2 the second time just now, I cried tears when credits came up. Honestly, I cried more than at any game's ending.
Max needs a hug. BADLY.

Personally, I thought the DOA ending of MP2 was bad, and it felt like a copout.
But still, I do have to agree with you and some other people on their points. Especially on the whole story of MP3.
The story was alright, perhaps it did try to feel like a Max Payne game with its twists, but I'm not sure if I liked how I felt when it was all [sp]this person betrayed you, but then all-of-a-sudden, he didn't[/sp], I mean guess it meant that [sp]everyone is deceiving you, just know who's truthful or not[/sp], but the fact that I'm confused about it, probably meant it was actually pretty sloppy. But then again, all my disappointments were washed away when I just thought of it as a Rockstar game.
It had most of the reminiscence of what makes a Max Payne game, but while it felt at times where it did feel like a Max Payne game, I just went in expecting it to be a Remedy Max Payne game. Obviously instead felt more like it was a Rockstar game, which I guess is okay to me.
But disappointments set aside, I'm not going to deny that I had a lot of fun, and that I really enjoyed the whole cinematic experience. I'm having a blast with multiplayer, and the Arcade modes are the most fun I had in a singleplayer.
so how do I get into the facepunch ps3 crew?

I hate when people make this kind of comment...
now I havn't finished the game yet, but too me it genuinely feels like max payne has aged and bittered with his years if that makes sense. You look at the first game where he really was a young cop and it was more sinister in tone, now he's an old drunk with a pill addiction, I think the bitter sarcasm and shit fits. It definitely "feels" different, but I don't think it's a bad thing. It's still noir storytelling, but the dialogue really makes me feel like shit he's not the sharp metaphor throwing young guy he used to be, he's got some major issues with himself and doesn't seem to want to waste time comparing things in ways like that anymore, if that makes sense..
idkw but johnny cash - hurt makes a perfect song for max it fits perfectly with him it could just be me though *shrug*

Inspired me to replay MP2 before tomorrow. Shame I don't own the first game - guess I'll just read up the story online. Wikipedia seems good.

It doesn't change the fact that it does not feel like Max Payne that there is a logical reason for why it would not feel like Max Payne anymore.
i'm having a great time with this game, really feels like i'm interacting with a movie, the animations are great and the actors are good at their roles
the graphics are great for the most part, imagine what rockstar will do with the NEXT generation of consoles
[editline]17th May 2012[/editline]
the only thing that could make that kind of believability better is if animations were programmed to be aware to surroundings, like, if you're running around a corridor you do it in a realistic way similar to how euphoria makes the ragdolls behave realistically, instead of just doing the pre-animated turn running animation which looks a bit unrealistic in situations like that, same for running up stairs and stuff like that

If you're talking about earlier two, technology of the time is to blame.
Sweet jesus I love this game. I need to replay the other 2.
oh wow just had the coolest thing, shot from behind went into last man standing, max whipped the gun around him as he fell to the ground, swinging down firing a hail of bullets at the enemy
Gah, why do I gotta wait till 1st June to play this!!
Damnit, I didn't get the Collector's Edition today. Good thing I have a day off tomorrow so I'll get up early and just wait for it to arrive in the mail. :v:
Just got an email from Amazon saying it's been dispatched. Was hoping to get it before release but hopefully it will come tomorrow morning, I have Fridays off college so I want all day to play.
I forgot to mention you can Shootdodge into enemies, effectively making it a tackle button as well.
Just don't do it with other enemies around or you'll be killed about instantly.

Does that in anyway change Max's animation? Would be awesome if when you dived into an enemy, max would put out his one hand and push him.
