Let's invite a quick thought in. It may be slightly dated or utterly stupid, but what if Gordon is the G-Man, heavily mentally-affected by the events of his character arc in the whole Half-Life series and whatever happens in the Arctic and/or the Borealis, lets him seize control of spacetime and/or Vortessence?
Perhaps the G-Man is Gordon in a separate timeline in which there was no one interfering in his endeavors after the Resonance Cascade, and he goes through a series of unknown changes that make him the man he is, and he goes back in time to the day of the Resonance Cascade to make some changes to the timeline to make the Earth able to retaliate against the Combine.
So like, he lives through the first Half-Life as Gordon, but without a G-Man watching him and putting him into stasis at the end. He goes through the story as usual, albeit with slightly different circumstances, and ends up killing the Nihilanth and living through the events leading up to the Seven Hour War. He joins the forces of one of the alien groups trying to take over the Earth, but they lose to the Combine. He then has to stay on the home planet of the other alien race, and while he's there he becomes capable of time manipulation and whatever else he can do. Then he goes back in time to the day of the Resonance Cascade to alter the timeline so that the Combine don't take over Earth permanently and the Earth is "normal" again. He makes sure that Gordon goes through the events of Half-Life properly (which is why he's watching him) and simply "plucks" him out of the Nihilanth's chamber after he kills it, so he can be placed back on Earth after the Combine have taken over. He also retrieves Alyx, probably because he somehow knew that she would be useful in assisting Gordon.
I just made that theory up as I went along, and I'm personally not too fond of theories of Gordon being the G-Man, but that actually seems to make sense to me.

Or he could've just not given Eli the sample that caused the resonance cascade
if episode three ever does come out valve has a LOT of explaining to do as to why it took longer to release than HL2

Not really?
Making a good, satisfying story with good gameplay while also taking all the time they need to polish or reiterate it as they need in order to create a better product?
Plus Source 2.

no man i totally get that, but it's taking too long regardless of how much polish or what ever they could be putting into it, it's been six years, that is an insane amount of time to wait for a mere episode.
That's longer than the wait between HL1 and HL2

They never said the next Half-Life game would definitely, certainly be a 5-hour long episode. They might've said that Episode 3 would be next up, but plans change pretty fast.
Rationally, they aren't going to be developing an entirely new engine over the course of 6+ years just for a filler game, solely because they said they would 6 years prior.
but what of his "employers"
I'm thinking he was working for some agency on this alien planet. Perhaps the people he's working with were fighting the Combine not so they themselves could take over the Earth, but so that the Earth could be independent.

I considered that, I'd say it falls under circumstances that he needed to change. Maybe a Resonance Cascade would have happened anyway, but he needed to do something to the crystal to make it a little different, to change the circumstances a bit.
Small question. Has there ever been any sort of Half-Life meme? Other than, of course, the fake website and "HL3 delayed again" stuff?
There must have been crowbar ones.
I know there were 'I'd hit it. With a crowbar.'
Don't think that one hit meme status though.

That was short-lived.
OH! And guys, I figured out who the G-Man is! When GLaDOS told Chell to "go make some new disaster", she took it literally. She disguised herself as a creepy man, and, using her knowledge of science, created a fake Xen Crystal. The scanners saw it as the purest and weirdest sample yet. We all know how easily fake jewels break, but instead it made the Resonance Cascade. And, of course, Chell also used her scientific mind to create a time machine, thus teleporting herself back to the days just before the Resonance Cascade and removing one impossibility of this theory!

So, the Gman disguise is just a Chell?

Pretty much well. (oh, whoops. I just remembered Chell never speaks. Damnit.)

"The Final Hours of Episode 3"
As if Geoff Keighley wouldn't do it. He'd totally do it. Maybe. (I hope)

Eh, I'd rather have VALVe do it; since I would love to hear what the developers have to say.

Well, Geoff could interview the Devs. Besides, that's what the commentaries are for.
This was a good writing on barnacles. http://www.destructoid.com/untold-riches-the-brilliance-of-half-life-s-barnacles-233589.phtml

Wasn't it said somewhere that it isn't because chell can't physically speak, it's because she doesn't want to speak to GLaD0S or similar, or something.

He most likely will.
It'll probably be called "The Final Years of Episode 3" though. :v:
What if gordon's simply insane?
Gman doesn't exist.
the manifestations of gman in black mesa are a construct of Gordon's inability to cope with such a chaotic event. Gordon needs to believe that there is some kind of divine plan set out for him to feel in control. Gman's appearances simply help to remind gordon that he's being watched and guided by a powerful force. The part of the game before the cascade is a memory in which the gman was added in to justify the sudden changes.
Gordon wasn't trapped in stasis by gman. the teleporter craziness after the death of the ninilath was slow and took place over years. (like how nova prospects teleportation took a week or two) Gordon and alyx were at the bottom of the tower in episode one due to being in the proximity of a telleporter that's destruction moved local objects further away.
Eli doesn't know about gman. Gordon just imagined that conversation. alyx didn't say prepare for unforseen consequences. Infact the 'heart to heart' chat was simply a result of vortal energy reminding gordon that he's felt the stuff before and it used to be a weapon used against him. invoking any subconscious dislike for the vorts.

She doesn't want to satisfy any part of the environment with a reply. Which is justified since, you know, literally everything at aperture tries to strike up conversations.
Remember back in 2007 when people were speculating about an Orange Box 2 containing Episode 3, and then they would just make up two more imaginary games to go with it?
The usual choice was Episode 3, Portal 2 and a new Counter-Strike, and now look which of those games we have.
i made myself sad

At least those zombies still had bits of jumpsuit, made more sense than everyone having just a white shirt.
but they're all fat
At least those zombies still had bits of jumpsuit, made more sense than everyone having just a white shirt.

I think originally the fat zombie was kind of one of the stages in the zombie's life. The headcrabs would lay eggs down the human's throat into their stomach where baby headcrabs would grow. This would essentially cause the host human to look bloated and fat. Eventually the baby headcrabs would burst from the host's stomach, causing the final stage of the zombie process. That's why the zombies that we see in retail have their chests ripped out. I remember hearing or reading this somewhere but it might not be canon/credible at all. It makes sense to me though and I've always liked this idea.
