It'd be interesting to see Valve's reaction to the alpha version being released...
Holy fuck now we gotta rebuild the entire series from the ground up See you in 7 more years
You know, I wonder if the multiplayer works at all.
Greetings, Facepunch Half-Life series general discussion thread! If you've been browsing through the alpha files, you've probably noticed that there are a number of demo files included, presumably all recorded by someone at Valve (maybe Gabe himself?) showcasing most of the singleplayer levels. However, if you didn't notice, then have I got a treat for you! I have recorded all 15 working dem files to video and combined them into one convenient montage that can be viewed on YouTube. That's 38 adrenaline-pumping minutes of high octane pre-release entertainment! But that's not all! I even recorded these in the software renderer to restore all of the effects that don't work in the OpenGL renderer! It's like a whole new alpha! But you say you've gone through all of the levels in the alpha and seen everything already? Well think again! The demos are recorded from an older version of the engine where it seems more entities were functioning, namely the fabled monster_human_assault. Skip to 5:26 if you want to see a surprise!
How'd you get the software renderer to work? mine just says a graphics driver is missing.
You know, I wonder if the multiplayer works at all. How'd you get the software renderer to work? mine just says a graphics driver is missing.
Try remove opengl32.dll and launch it with Half-Life GL.bat file.
How'd you get the software renderer to work?
Set your desktop color depth to 16-bit. Engine.exe will work then. The game defaults to a 320x240 window and ignores the -width and -height launch parameters, so you'll probably want to mess with the "vid_forcemode" console command to change the resolution. I used "vid_forcemode 1" which doubles the screen resolution to 640x480. Also, don't forget to change your desktop color depth to 32-bit when you're done.

Was doing some screwing around earlier [t]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/921251565045919309/0BEA6FAE770E9F149B1DFC653117747C0308753B/[/t] [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/921251565045919792/6415DAACA075D0681DC06AFC8705366BE07BF7D9/[/t] [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/921251565045918042/253CBB3A4D0E9DAD85A47B1F2693734F9943EC69/[/t] The levels work sorta, albeit with the wrong palette and missing npcs/scripts Interestingly enough, if you load office complex with the Quake CD in/use a port that supports mp3/ogg playback, the song from the Quake OST that Quake loads is actually really similar sounding to the ambient HL song they used for the E3 98 office complex trailer
The only meaningful part of the alpha that I didn't know before was the story that someone posted before.
Actually, they were toying with a Zombie concept, the Scientist that assaults a Guard in the Scripted Sequence room is a Zombie, he has no eyes, and is snarling. This was probably before they decided to use the Headcrab as the Zombie. It's this one:
He's not a zombie, he just has low polygon glasses (or maybe they were painted on his face).
Im not sure if that is alpha. The 0.52 is believable, But on the last page in the other version i noticed that a: the levels are incredibly low polly b: the models are very high polly (for the time)
Oh wow, enabling software mode also makes the weapon selection menu show up. There's 4 weapons in total. Crowbar, pistol, MP5 and fists.

But the levels were in active development and could be heavily changed or even scrapped at any time, so they just prototyped them to not waste too much work if something changes. That's why Half-Life 2 beta has pretty-looking models and orange/grey world.
He's not a zombie, he just has low polygon glasses (or maybe they were painted on his face).
There is a version with proper glasses, and without the deadly snarl.

Go to your desktop, right click and click screen resolution, then click advanced settings, and then click Monitor. Then just change True color 32 bit to High color 16 bit. Then just go back to the half life folder and run either engine.exe (not engineGL.exe) or Half life.bat (not half life GL.bat) [editline]9th January 2013[/editline] Also has anyone tried hosting a server yet?

[editline]9th January 2013[/editline] Oddly enough, the colour depth option doesn't appear, I only have refresh rate. I guess my monitor doesn't support 16bit colour. However, I am running Windows 8 so that might affect it. I can set engine.exe to 16bit colour on it's own through compatibility settings, which lets me get one step further. My desktop resolution changes but then I get a different error: "Selected video mode not supported." I will try some other things and edit in my results. [editline]9th January 2013[/editline] After some reading I found out Windows 8 no longer supports 16-bit for desktop, which might be a problem. Since this version of GoldSrc seems to be Quake engine+ , I will google the issue for Quake. [editline]9th January 2013[/editline] That didn't help.
[t]http://imageshack.us/a/img687/482/enginegl201301091429568.jpg[/t] It works

Try right clicking Engine.exe, clicking properties and then compatibility, and tick reduced color mode and select 16 bit color. Then just click OK and try launching Engine.exe
So, NECA Gravity guns have gone up for preorder For only 149 bucks holy shit

$150 :suicide:
I want it so bad, but that price is way out of the question. I would totally pay for that price if it was this one, though: [t]http://www.gameranx.com/img/11-Dec/gravity-gun-irl.jpg[/t]
I hate how people often say "Gordon got forced to do stupid stuff like push buttons and push carts" But bear in mind, he's a scientist The most adventurous thing you ever see a Scientist do in Half Life is use the intercom to talk to Gordon Gordon probably volunteered - its a hell of a lot better than being holed up in an observatory room trying to make sense of a bunch of data He was presumably one of the higher ups for the experiment - it was postponed for at least a half hour when they could just find someone else to push the cart He wrote several papers on the theory of Resonance-based transportation using crystals, so he'd probably be one of the smartest people on the project to understand the mechanics In short, the reason he was doing such boring stuff when he was a scientist is because its much more than he was going to do anyway
Gordon's position is "Research Associate", which doesn't really sound like a leading role. Surely the experiment didn't consist entirely of him pushing a cart into a beam, there was probably a lot more physical interaction with the sample required later in the experiment. We just never got to see it because the whole thing exploded.
you guys remember the half life trailer right i think the demo files someone found was for this im not sure
you guys remember the half life trailer right i think the demo files someone found was for this im not sure
That's actually one of the 2 included trailers on the CD. The other trailer shows maps which aren't in the alpha.

More fun than just hitting the button and standing there.
