Why not
It's a pretend world anyway, might as well pretend along with it
I do the same. Also in HL2 I like to barricade hallways and doorways with props to obstruct any imaginary combine that might be searching the area for me.
So the alpha comes with compilers
We could make our own shitty alpha maps

You were going to be able to actually do that, based on what they showed in the HL2 Tech Demo.
Back when I first played HL2/GMOD, I thought the Combine AI were way, way smarter than they actually were. I assumed that they would ruthlessly hunt me like an animal, and for whatever reason I was pretty scared of them. I would load up a map in GMod, spawn a troop of heavily-armed soldiers, barricade a door, and hide in a corner. I thought they'd break the door down and search the place if they heard any noises.

holy shit
Was doing some screwing around earlier
The levels work sorta, albeit with the wrong palette and missing npcs/scripts
Interestingly enough, if you load office complex with the Quake CD in/use a port that supports mp3/ogg playback, the song from the Quake OST that Quake loads is actually really similar sounding to the ambient HL song they used for the E3 98 office complex trailer
Now you got me thinking how much would it take to port the alpha and/or retail to DarkPlaces.

Reminds me of when I first played Half-Life. I had no concept of what a level was, and I remember believing that Black Mesa was actually as big as Valve made it seem during the tram ride. I had dreams about escaping the tram and exploring the rest of the place.

It's neat that Blue Shift and Opposing Force kind of let you explore the areas around parts that you only pass through in HL1. Stuff like the security guard area in Blue Shift, or the area on the other end of the dam, or around the Lambda Complex portal, etc. in Opposing Force.
If I recall correctly, doesn't the famous cliffside from Surface Tension make a cameo when you ride the chopper in OP4's intro?
Well, on an unrelated note, if Gordon WAS to return to Black Mesa to stop the Resonance Cascade from happening, it would actually be the perfect opportunity for an open-world HL game. Sort of like a time-based one, you have to get to Anomalous Materials ASAP, and avoid the guards who would be thinking "woah hey, what the heck are you doing here, you aren't authorized to get in here derp". And the G-Man, who would be potentially attempting to stop you. ALso, given the Combine's presence near the Borealis, if that were what allowed the time travel stuff, they could use it too. But then get completely wiped out the immediate instant you prevented the Cascade from occurring.
EDIT: Pageking.

And it should stop, it never adds anything to the thread except for unrelated random pictures most of the time.

what most threads are you talking about?
fast threads don't count, because they should never be used as examples for anything ever
Id like half life 2 to be scarier.
The designs of enemies look like they're supposed to be terrifying.
Soulless soldiers.
manhacks
striders (and hunters) (i think we need to fight one at night)
antlions (imagine getting eaten by a real one... that mouth.. that horrible mouth)
Hideously mutated zombies.
barnacles.
But other than the first few times i fought fast zombies and running away from the guardian in episode 2: they aren't

not everyone does pageking, its retarded. seriously. if you condone pagekings you should leave facepunch.
"pageking" is bannable anyway
So anyway, about Half-Life... I think that we'll start hearing more about the Steam Box in a few months and that they will start demoing Source 2 on the boxes so show how much better they are than the new Xbox or Playstation. Half-Life 3 will probably be the first game launched on the new engine.

All the regularly updated TF2 threads, for one
Valve aren't even officially announcing their 'console' this year, let alone demonstrating it.
I'm still standing by my "no Half-Life news in 2013" prediction.
I have no high hopes of anything Half Life related being announced this year. Maybe some more Dota stuff, a handful of TF2 updates, and potentially a new game.
I would like an original new game, something we have never seen before like prospero or SOB (Not specifically those games, but to give you an idea).
lol some unused early quake art files in the alpha that ID never released

Some of the particle effects in the alpha are more impressive than in the released version. E.g. The blood trails when a headcrab attacks

Eh, if you bled like that you'd die of blood-loss right quick.
