Half-Life & Portal series, general discussion (v3)

As far as we know aperture could have a super ridiculous and over the top preventative measure for forced entry, it's just that we have never tried to get into aperture science, thus haven't seen it.
Aperture rocket turrets can't spin the rockets around to confuse the gunships like Gordon can. Also we are assuming that the Combine even know where the Aperture labs are.
For some reason this post made me imagine Atlas and P-Body redirecting rockets to combine gunships as they fend off the facility from the combine. That would be awesome. Also, they do know where Aperture is, as discussed a few pages back
Just like the three year mark?
I say this because there was a six year difference between half life 1 and 2. No doubt around then some gaming news sites are going to be releasing articles about how its taken longer for Ep3 to come out than it did for half life 2 to come out and the pressures going to be on. The three year mark is meaningless.
And whats stopping them from just drilling into Aperture and unleashing their gunships, I mean theres enough room for them to fly around in the huge empty expanses, and I dont see apertures rocket turrets doing much to the combine tech. Aperture has a lot of defense measures that can prevent the combine from navigating the area, but they don't need to navigate it to gain access to it.

I wrote a fanfic (hot, I know) about a bunch of Resistance members attempting to break into Aperture's Enrichment Center. They kind of all died before they could breach the entrance. Also, they were stalked from afar by someone not unlike the Gman. I called him The Suited Beggar, and he was terrifying in my story. :T
Man, I wish I still had that story. It's a reminder of better times in my mind.
I'd assume the rocket turrets would do at least as much as Gordon's RPGs. They seem to take down Combine aircraft decently. I think we've only seen the two or so rocket turrets in Portal 1, though, so we can't really say how many they have throughout the whole complex.
Nah, those rockets were incredibly weak, they couldn't even kill you in one hit. You could survive the blast unscathed by holding a computer mouse in-front of you :v:
They'll keep milking the ambiguity of the G-man until the series ends. His mystery is very crucial to the plot.
I see Gman as sort of, a demigod, like he comes from a higher plane of existence, a sort of dimension outside of the dimensions, if that makes sense.

He's definitely got some sort of Godlike qualities, but at the same time his magic has been trumped by the Vorts.
They've definitely still got a bit to tell us about that guy.
I wonder if the Gman's actual name will ever be identified.. the G-man starts receiving attention at the end of Episode 2. We now know he had contact with other humans other then just you and Adrian. So that'd be.. Freeman, Shepard, Eli, Alyx, and the Vorts. I wonder if he will become a bigger concern in the game.

Also Barney, Breen and some of the higher-ranking scientists at Black Mesa.

Did he have contact with Barney? Been a while since I've played BS. So yeah, he should probably be a major focus in the game at this point. Though I'd understand if Valve decides to leave it unclear.
Wow, didn't realize that Robert Guillaume (Eli Vance) is 85 years old...

I just finished Blue Shift a few days ago. While Barney sees G-Man, they never have a confrontation at the end of the game like with Gordon and Adrian.

Nah, Barney was never in contact with or even knows about the Gman, as far as I know. Gordon was 'employed' by him', Adrian was 'detained' (in OP4 is canon), Eli has met with him, Breen at least knows about him, and that's it.
Barney is special in that he was a superb fighter and survivor, but got no recognition from the Gman. In fact, Gman doesn't appear in Blue Shift at all.

Doesn't he appear once, but not in relation to barney what-so-ever

Odessa had a chitty chat and a tea-and-bikkies with him

Actually, G-Man is in Blue Shift, but he only appears once and at the very beginning, passing by in a tram. He completely ignores Barney though, and Barney does the same. I also have reason to believe that the G-man took interest in Barney after a certain amount of time, and it's implied that G-man tried to communicate with Barney at the end of Blue Shift, but couldn't because he was "out of range" as described by the ending text. It's just like the text you mentioned for Freeman that states he was "hired" or for Shepard that states he was "detained."
How did Barney end up perfectly positioned to intercept Gordon within minutes of his unexpected arrival in City 17? And why did he seem barely surprised that Gordon had appeared there 20 years are disappearing in the aftermath of the Black Mesa Incident? Surely Gordon would have been presumed dead after not returning from Xen; I can't see why some of the main characters would show so little surprise at his sudden re-appearance and be so well-placed to capitalise on it unless the G-man had previously notified them.

G-Man planned it to pan out this way.

He appears in a tram train, and he notices Barney. Also, I think G-Man has appeared in more half life games than Gordon himself, since we don't see Gordon in Decay.
Odessa had a chitty chat and a tea-and-bikkies with him
Oh right, I forgot about Odessa completely :v:
So Odessa knows about him, but we don't know how much, only that he's spoken to him. I wonder if the Rebels or Combine witnessed this event..
G-Man planned it to pan out this way.
It seems implied that Eli 'hired' Gman to get Gordon back with the goal of toppling the Combine, evidently through science over a period of time. This fails, so instead Gordon ends up taking a more direct approach, perhaps why Gman seems slightly surprised that he has to come back for you so soon.

Gman didn't count on Gordon "sciencing" his way to the Citadel, did he?
@nightlord: The Gameinformer Half-Life/Portal timeline suggests that Black Mesa got their technology in 1998, which we know is false, and has been corrected by Wolpaw when someone sent him a mail about it ages ago. Sent Marc Laidlaw an e-mail anyway, hoping that he responds this time. There are still things in it that doesn't contradict what goes on in Portal 2, so you don't have to worry about retcons.
So Marc replied to my email, but it doesn't really say anything definitive

i don't think he puts too much thought into it
the multiverse was a gimmick to explain the test chamber dlc, i'd be very surprised if it was that
I thought the actual content in the Videos was canon though, just Cave being involved with them wasn't. A few of the things from the investment videos are seen in game and other things like the comics.

I was mistaken.

G-Man just took the perfect time to send him in, the time and place where the Doc and Barney would be.

Wasn't Gordon from MIT or am I reading the email incorrectly?
He's an MIT graduate but he was working at Innsbruck before Kleiner got him to work at Black Mesa.

Just started Portal 2 again. I forgot how good the soundtrack is. I love how different parts of the score actually come from parts of the environment (laser switches, light bridges, especially the companion cube singing the ending opera). I remember when i first played through and got to the bit in old aperture with the repulsion gel, the way that the music is synchronised with each bounce while also harmonising with the underlying score made me so happy that it brought a tear to my eye.
Love this game
