Half-Life & Portal series, general discussion (v3)

Alright, so it seems Half-life WON works to some extent, I can hear sound, and the screen resizes itself to a measly 1280x960. Maybe the packaged OpenGL drivers aren't playing along with Windows 8, would anyone know how to fix that?
Stop using Windows 8.
[QUOTE=DevinWatson;39431272]Looks like Sony is announcing the next PlayStation on the 20th, wonder if we'll a certain next-gen engine running a particular next-gen game? [IMG]http://www.facepunch.com/fp/ratings/rainbow.png[/IMG]
I'd be up for something like this again:

No way they would show HL3 on next-gen console reveal. They wouldn't want to show a game where some other platform is the main platform. Valve wouldn't like that too. We would see something like Uncharted or something.

I haven't really been complaining about it, it's great that the inbuilt option exists now, it just it would be even better if it was the other way around.

win8 does not have proper builtin OpenGL support from what i've heard.

HL1 / CS update:
[quote]We have released an update for both games, fixes include:
[b]Added option to disable use of HD model packs in Video tab of options dialog [/b]
Fixed mp_fadetoblack not applying after a flashbang is thrown (Counter-Strike)
Fixed fullscreen software mode rendering incorrectly
Added cl_min_t and cl_min_ct convar to let you control the model used when cl_minmodels is set, the value of the cvar is the model index to use (Counter-Strike) [/quote]
I knew valve would come through :3
is the update for hl1 really out?
don't see anything new in the video tab

Have you tried playing the game, might need to convert you game files over to SteamPipe. Also beta participation seems to have reset again so you might need to re-enroll.
yes, I tried things.
No, I'm not part of the beta, I do not play on linux. The HD change happened regardless if you were in the beta or not so I expect the fix to do the same.
[B]How the Orangebox update affected Half-Life 2 and Episode One[/B]
okay so I finally decided to go ahead and report everything that went wrong with this update
this is some nerd stuff so skip ahead if this doesn't interest you
note that most of these are directly compared to my own memory of the older HL2, so I may be missing some
Go.
[B]Movement[/B]
First of all, you can no longer activate sprint when jumping, ducking or underwater. That was annoying to get used to.
Jumping forward no longer pushes you as much as it did, combined with bunnyhopping you could literally get through a mile of terrain within seconds. However this still exists backwards, but it's trickier to do.
Ducking, standing up and tapping duck again puts you in a elevated position where you view is looking stood up, however your actual playermodel is still ducked, making you virtually invincible to any bullet-based attack since the npcs are coded to shoot your view, rather than your body. Even more powerful behind a small barrier or similar cover. Bug also exists in gmod and is completely abuseable in PvP modes.
[B]Eyes[/B]

when you see it
[B]Radiosity[/B]
All maps get that ugly rainbow-like coloring in the lightning

[B]Skyboxes[/B]
All non-HDR maps get an ugly stretched skybox
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/sky1.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/sky2.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/sky3.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/sky4.jpg[/thumb]
[B]Inconsistent HDR[/B]
All maps in the xbox360 version of half-life 2 have HDR lightning. However for pc, valve decided to only include 1/3rd of them. Even worse, if you do not have HDR enabled on these maps, you have to play through fullbright (no LDR compile)
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/hdr1.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/hdr2.jpg[/thumb]

[B]Vehicle physics[/B]
The combine APC basically sinks into the ground for god-knows what reason
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/apc1.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/apc2.jpg[/thumb]
The buggy had most of its properties replaced by the ep2 jalopy's. It is nearly impossible to trip over and it can push car wrecks as if they were mere barrels. This pretty much allows you to skip many areas with traps and wrecks that used to halt the player's progress.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/buggy1.jpg[/thumb]
The affected turbo also prevents you from completing the train face-off area, unless you are extremely timey and lucky. So you are better off doing this instead -
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/buggy2.jpg[/thumb]
[B]Engine Rendering[/B]
Ugly tearing in the desert you teleport in

[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/zombie.jpg[/thumb]
Random massive stuttering in this area, confirmed by other players
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/buggy3.jpg[/thumb]
"Cheap" water automatically turned into "expensive" water, showing horrible displacement work under

[B]Broken Sequences[/B]
Breen not standing up and etc. Everyone knows about this one.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss1.jpg[/thumb]
Vortigaunts armor charge-up literally doing nothing at all
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss2.jpg[/thumb]
Second razor train sometimes does not spawn
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss3.jpg[/thumb]
No citizen to open the door for you. Just opens on its own. Probably a failsafe to make up for broken AI. Was fine before.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss4.jpg[/thumb]
Gravity gun pickup now starts way too early, sequence is done by the time the player enters the area.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss5.jpg[/thumb]
Alyx repeats the same "We did it Gordon" twice in a row.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss7.jpg[/thumb]
[B]AI Alteration[/B]
Metrocops trying to find the player when they shouldn't

Zombies not getting out of ambush, just sitting in there
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/ss6.jpg[/thumb]
Citizens without a specificed weapon spawn with alyx's gun (might have happened in the old version too, not sure)
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/citizen.jpg[/thumb]
Dropships refuse to shoot anything at medium-close range to them. Making it stupidly easy to camp.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/drop1.jpg[/thumb]
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/drop2.jpg[/thumb]
[B]HUD[/B]
A cut-off crowbar sprite can be seen if you switch from the SMG1/AR2 to a weapon with no secondary projectile
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/hud1.jpg[/thumb]
The airboat's flashlight is now shrinked by about half of its original size.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/flash1.jpg[/thumb]
Proof that it's broken : it renders dynamic shadows as if it were casting the light from the ground
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/flash2.jpg[/thumb]
[B]Texture conversions[/B]
Detail texture removed the foliage and grass sprites
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/texture1.jpg[/thumb]
Random orientation change
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/texture2.jpg[/thumb]
90% certain this room never used these blue walls
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/texture3.jpg[/thumb]
Downright missing decal
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/texture4.jpg[/thumb]
Again, almost sure this door never used this particular texture
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/texture5.jpg[/thumb]
[B]Sound[/B]
Strange, extremely low-pitched sounds played by this area. Creepy.
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/sound1.jpg[/thumb]
Missing soundscapes for about the whole way in ep1_c17. Horrifyingly quiet and atmosphere-killing. Very noticeable in this particular area
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/sound2.jpg[/thumb]
[B]The GOOD things we got from the update[/B]
Updated blood effects, phong, HDR and combine shotgunners
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/new4.jpg[/thumb]
Train rails no longer collide with the buggy during train face-off
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/new2.jpg[/thumb]
Extra supply crates in secret area. Used to only have a magnum in there
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/new1.jpg[/thumb]
New ammo cache
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/new5.jpg[/thumb]
New firecamp to show off vortigaunt graphics ([I]wohoo[/I])
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/new3.jpg[/thumb]
(was it worth it? no.)
[B]Things we SHOULD have got with the update but didn't[/B]
Ep2 helicopter bomb
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/should1.jpg[/thumb]
Independent flashlight
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/should2.jpg[/thumb]
Updated alyxgun firing sound (using its own sound)
[thumb]http://www.sourceop.com/hell-met/HL2/should3.jpg[/thumb]

MASSIVE WHITE FLASHS WHEN HURT
[B]WHY[/B]

So like I said, this is probably even barely scratching the surface. Sooo yay valve.
A few things:
[QUOTE]The affected turbo also prevents you from completing the train face-off area, unless you are extremely timey and lucky.[/QUOTE]
Not quite. They changed it so you have to hold down turbo now, rather than tapping it. You can still play chicken and win against the train.
[QUOTE]Citizens without a specificed weapon spawn with alyx's gun (might have happened in the old version too, not sure)[/QUOTE]
Pretty sure this has always been in the game.
I have an addition for your list. The track "Train Station 2," which is supposed to play while Metro Cops are shooting at you as you run across the rooftops at the start of the game, does not play.
Great list, btw. Thanks for taking the time to assemble it.
[QUOTE=Coffee;39434862]Stop using Windows 8.[/QUOTE]
Being an early adopter is fun despite all the kinks, one of them being the loss of Windows 7 when I upgraded, and it's not like I'm buying it again. What do you want me to do? Get Linux? I don't have the money for a backup drive, nor the time and energy to even make it a consideration. You are an asset to the community, honestly, I could only hope to be as helpful and as good a poster as you.
En Ex is right, that citizen at BME always had an "Alyxgun".
Everything else is very good and hopefully will help the devs see what needs fixing as well as improved.
Edit: I just realised I'm this isn't in the enhancement mod thread, whoops :v:
bah. Just did it for everyone but valve
odds are they already know about it
won't change a thing
[QUOTE=Hell-met;39443545]bah. Just did it for everyone but valve

[QUOTE=Meatpuppet;39443555]because this is top on their priority list right[/QUOTE]
alot of minor details together end up being large
look at tf2
however I have a better idea for valve : let's not update singleplayer games because obviously it brings no good.
I'm almost glad they did a left4dead2 instead of putting it all into left4dead1, because then it probably would have broken everything
[QUOTE=Hell-met;39442868][B]How the Orangebox update affected Half-Life 2 and Episode One[/B]
- a whole bunch of shit -
So like I said, this is probably even barely scratching the surface. Sooo yay valve.[/QUOTE]
If they do anything similar to Half Life when HL2 is ported, then at least some of the real issues should get resolved, though Half Life 2 is a tad larger and more complex so who knows.
