Playing without the fleet would be morbidly imbalanced. You'd attain twice or thrice as much scrap as you should have and thus develop your ship faster than the levels develop theirs
uhhhhhh

Is the vortex SUPPOSED to not be able to kill ships or something? As soon as something shows up with more than 1 shield you just kinda roll over and die.

Personally how I play the engi ships is I let the ion cannon spam the shields till they are disabled then use a Anti Ship drone to fuck everything up on it.

Well yes that's all fine and dandy...
...if you're using version A.

Well then lesson learned, if you want to kill something with more sheilds, buy more weapons or use version A.
:downs:

Well, that's where you are going wrong, you are selecting the wrong ship layout you silly goose.

Version B is such a cool idea tho :((
I bet if I got one more laser on there it could take the world. I'll bother with that another time.
Someone on Reddit uploaded a mod which only disables the fleets (and not add in other imbalanced dumb things).

Yeah, I posted other reddit link earlier, which included this mod as well. I think it should be put into OP.
The (rebel) engie guy is like "fml"

Eh, that type B engi ship looks like it has shit air lock placement anyway.
I don't like having to flood too many important system rooms.

Haha, pretty much same thing just happened to an enemy ship I came across.

All this game needs is an in depth ship editor so I can add a drone room to my kestrel from the start and rape

Or play the vastly superior Engi ship.

So with this mod i actually had enough stuff to give the engis in need a mega fuckton of supplies after saving them and they gave me the exclusive nanobots(to their ship anyway), and upgrade your medbay for free. Holy shit.

also does this fucking shit ever have a different outcome. Every time i try to side with him its always a trap and when i do try to sell him the fire lights up in his eyes and kills someone. I only ever got to sell him once but i never keep him as a crewmember

how did I even manage to screw this up?
So.. how am i to play Federation ship?
Or is it just shit and i should go back to engi/ kestrel (and unlock something new)
Had a feeling this might be an interesting game when I saw it in the featured items list.
So, with the much-lamented lack of content, how many hours of fun can you get out of this?
Is it worth the €8.99? By the standard of games like Minecraft or Kerbal Space Program, that is. Not €50 titles that take 10 hours or less to finish. I hardly ever buy any of those.

Played it for 9 hours so far and it's still fun, although the lack of content variety is showing its ugly head. The devs will hopefully (and most likely will) expand in the near future. Game has enormous potential.

Actually Type B is pretty simple once you know how to handle it.
The strength of the ship is that you start with decent weaponry, and a lot of drones. First thing you want to do is use those extra 30 to get yourself a bit more engine power, so you can increase your evading chance. Consider buying autopilot afaik.
Against weaker ships (so pretty much everything you face during the first sector), disable autofire and use the ion to disable ship, then immediately target their weapon systems. Take advantage of your fast reloading laser to keep the weapon systems disabled, and take any opportunity to fuck up their shields as well, so you can use the Ion on anything else.
The things you have to buy in priority are more ion weapons (I'm dead serious), sensors and at least one more crew member. If you can't find a crew member, go with autopilot so you have a bit more freedom. KEEP YOUR DRONES. I have made the mistake of selling a repair drone once, and it didn't need much time to bite me right in the ass. Only sell your repair drones if you have more than 3 crew members, and sensors.
The point of having a lot of ion weapons is that you can harass the enemy ship as much as possible. During my best game so far with Type B, I had the starting ion plus a smaller fast loading one. I used the fast loading to constantly disable their weapon systems while the slower one disabled their shields every once in a while. The laser slowly took out secondary systems, so the enemy crew would go repair them, making ion more effective on their main systems.
If you are advanced enough, consider selling one repair drone in favor of an anti-ship, or defensive one. Upgrading your shields is actually quite secondary, since the main point of that ship is to disable enemy weapons constantly so you can quietly fuck them up. Instead, use the scrap to upgrade weapons and drone cells so you can eventually build yourself a nice army of drones and weapons that constantly harass the other ship.
Needless to say it's better if you find yourself a missile weapon (teleporting bombs that do system damage are preferable since they very rarely miss, are very reliable, and can do massive damage). Target their weapons in priority, obviously.
If you really need to train up, consider using a mod that disable the rebel fleet. Always nice to be able to play around without a time limit.

It's definitely worth taking. It's a game that, theorically, can be finished very fast, if you consider that it's possible to "beat" the game in a single run. The thing is, the game is based on random generation of events and your ability to learn from previous mistakes, so you can eventually beat the game. And even if you do beat it once, you still have to do that at least 18 times (one per ship including alternative layouts) if you want to have the full experience. Not only would that take a very long time, but it's also intercut with runs that won't be as good, so you'll really have time to spend on this.
And the best part about it is, not only is it fun to just fuck around with your ship and kill people, but it's also always different. everything moves around and even though some of the events have only like two variations to them you can be assured that every single one of your games will be widely different. And it will always be fun.
Tis but a scratch, they get ruined.

AWESOME.
Beat it with Engi A. Stumbled across a burst laser III in the Last Stand, first weapon that was worth it the entire playthrough. Nobody else was selling guns! Nobody! And beam drones may be useless against shields, but pack one with a laser drone while spamming ion and burst lasers and once it gets in, it hurts a lot.

This mod is so fucking awesome.
ALL lasers do 3 damage A HIT.
I got two burst laser IIs on the kestrel and Weapon Preigniters.
Every ship I came across died in five seconds and I used that all the way up to the flagship and killed it.

i got 2 heavy crystal mark 2s
reloads in 10 seconds
fires 2 rounds each
4 damage each round
piercing value of 5
I killed all of the crew members on the rebel flagship.
Instead of winning the flagship suddenly has an AI and self-repair capability.
Now I am stuck with an oxygen-less flagship I can't board and with self-repairing systems.
GUESS WHO GOT DESTROYED?
Fuck, why is this so hard?
This is only on easy mode.

Just started modding this. Here's a hint to people, never put the damage for a weapon on 20, or the game will crash on launch.
