God damn it I had a great run going where I had found a pre-igniter and a scrap arm in the first stage
And then this retarded ship just spams ion cannons at me and I can't do anything.
there should be a sandbox mode, where there is no rebel fleet advancing towards you, so you can explore at your leisure.
Agreed.
It's far too short sadly.
I'm hoping for custom campaigns.
Getting ships is tedious, I wish I could just magically unlock all of them.
save with ships unlocked, there is a trainer as well but it doesnt have that feature

I love this. I just wish I had some better luck in getting the new ships unlocked; not a big fan of the Engi Torus, and the Kestrel is all I've had so far.
I either reach one quest without the right kind of crew, or don't have a chance to start another, and so on. I might just use that save, but I'm hesitant since I'd rather try and just get one, then unlock the rest myself.
Some mercs asked me not to fuck them up and the gave me a heavy laser MKII, I checked the wiki, apparently it's rather rare.
I like the art style and it's on Linux, I might have to pick this up.
So I jumped and found another one, 2 heavy lasers mark II in a row? Man, I'm lucky today.
The game is sex. I love it
Although I expected the controlls to be over complicated. I mean it is good that they are that simple, but simply playing a roguelike feels SO STRANGE.
Eh, that's a hell of a lot of effort to unlock those ships... Should I just go onto easy mode to get them in about 2 minutes?
If you really don't want to work so hard to unlock everything you could just get a savefile of somebody who has them all, I believe there's one on their forums.
Easy mode won't make it that much easier to unlock them.

I actually started using this.
I find it more fun to have more choice, sure it gets rid of a reason to keep playing, but honestly I won't be playing this for the unlocks.
As my ship explodes, I watch the crew I teleported onto the enemy ship kill the last two of their crew
So fucking close.

At least you can rest easy that your crew will carry your legacy.
The Rebel Flagship teared me to pieces. Holy shit, I couldn't have possibly matched it.

I really have no idea why this game is shooting for association with roguelikes. It has almost nothing in common with the genre.
And the term "roguelike-like" irritates me. But we probably shouldn't go down that road in yet another thread.
I once forgot to turn off autofire, so I accidently blew up an enemy ship while my boarders were still inside.
They were good boarders too :(

I did that without autofire
I'm a genius

Well I'm a roguelike-terminology-nazi, and though this game definitely IS NOT A ROGUELIKE (making sure people notice that), it features a LOT of little touches that make it pretty clear this game is heavily influenced by roguelikes. Randomization is the most obvious thing, but then I can also tell that Hull Health and Fuel are both resources intended to function like food in a roguelike: finite, but necessary resources that force the player to keep moving down the dungeon. (Or across the galaxy, as it were.)
EDIT: well since this post won me a title i felt compelled to do something about it. here you go. have fun. remember kids, knowing is half the battle!

Do I need to bring up the Berlin Interpretation...AGAIN?

it's not, end of story. it boggles me that this is debateable.

*sigh*
During the official Roguelike Development Conference in 2008 roguelike developers from across the world have pinned down the concrete factors that make a game into roguelike.
Here's the second version of what's called a Berlin Interpretation:
High Value Factors
Random Environment Generation The game world and its contents are mostly procedurally generated with each game.
Permafailure (including Permadeath) The character must pay for your mistakes and choices, sometimes at the cost of his life. Restoring games is discouraged and only provided to allow continuing split games.
Turn Based Interaction All entities in the game world are queued in an endless loop and get their independant discrete turn to act.
Single command set You can access all game commands from any place into the game. There are no artificial restrictions on what actions are available in a given game situation, for example inside or outside battles.
Free form Your advancement is not enrouted into a linear progression. You get to choose what to do, how and when.
Discovery mechanics You must research or find out the nature and usages of the items into the world.
Middle Value Factors

Single player You control a single character
Plenty of content There are enough monsters types and items to make it worthwhile exploring. This is contrast of a small set of known item and monster types. (more than 24 monster and item types is a good measure)
Complex non-trivial world and object interactions Items have non-trivial usages, you can do some things which may not be obvious for the item nature.
Low Value Factors

High ramped difficulty The game gets hard very quick and you are very unlikely to win until you have acquired enough experience.
Monsters are players The nature of the monsters is similar to the player, they can have equipment, player-like stats, artificial intelligence and are subject to the same world rules
Character-based display The player interacts with the world via a user interface based on character symbols that represent UI artifacts and entities into the world.
Hack and Slash Gameplay involves around killing things to become more powerful and acquiring treasure to buy better equipment and repeat the cycle
The game is to be considered a roguelike if it scores more than half of those factors. Weighted by their value.
As you can clearly see, FTL just like other innovative roguelikes like Spelunky and such are considered to be roguelikes.
[editline]16th September 2012[/editline]
Why do you guys make me explain this in every god damn roguelike thread?

Because you're wrong and I'm not having this stupid argument again.
Anyways, I wish I had known that buying from the official site would give you a DRM-free copy AND a Steam key. I bought from GOG since I prefer GOG to Steam, but only because of the lack of DRM... and there doesn't seem to be a way to buy the soundtrack aside from Steam. Do they have a Bandcamp page set up or something, maybe?
EDIT: see above post. alternatively, check dis shit, yo.

Yes, see when you make a statement the general idea is to back it up, that other guy did for his and you decided to be an arrogant twat instead and say 'no I'm right because you're wrong'
The fuck you DOIN SON

Because this argument is repeated ad infinitum in every so-called "roguelike" thread. I've made my case before. I don't need to fill up this thread with it. Nobody wants to sit through this discussion again.

Again, being an arrogantly dismissive twat.
Why even post about it if you can't be fucked discussing it? Why should anyone listen to you based on your word alone? The other guy actually found evidence for his standpoint. I don't see why you should be exempt from that yet still think that you can hold a valid viewpoint.
Were you just saying 'you're wrong' for the sake of saying it or what?
EDIT:
Continue it with me in a PM if you want to, otherwise this had gone far enough.
