Okay so this game is definitely a lot of trial and error. It seems your survivability(word?) is entirely dependant on your luck and whether or not you have long range scanners. but even then you have to fight to have any chance of finding useful items. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit but the best I've done so far was with the Kestral and I got to the boss battle but because I didn't have very good weapons and not enough money I didn't stand a chance. And unlocking new ships seems very annoying. You have to do quests but hope to god the fleet doesn't catch up to you before you have a chance to complete it.
Actually I found with experience that the fleet take ages to catch up, even on normal difficulty. For me the biggest issue was running out of fuel by exploring too much.
Crap... [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/939257693835715236/5FABDB198C8ED40A9A40283E12C75FCD5E91C764/[/t] I wanted to find more Ion weapons but no store sold them.
you haven't lost yet!
Yea I did. I warped out, but ran into a random event that killed me.
It seems there are an awful lot more enemy encounters at asteroid fields and suns than normal, when it really should be the other way around.
I had an amazing boarding run. Two Mantises (Manti?), Mikhail and Jung Yea or something. Both had fully leveled Combat skills. Those 2 were able to fight off a 4 Mantis boarding party, alone, not in the Med Bay. They were also able to take on a 5 crewed ship without needing to teleport back for healing. God damned bosses, they were. It was amazing. I laughed my ass off whenever I came across a ship that had a crew of 1 Zoltan and 1 Engi. Literally, they killed the enemy crew before they had a chance to charge their weapons. Shame my poor little 4 shield, fully upgraded cloak Stealth Cruiser didn't stand up to the Flagship. Probably because the only weapon I found in the entire run was a Hull Missile which missed 4 times when targeting the shields. Took out the first form with minimal damage, though.
I think if you beat a ship by killing it's crew you should get more scrap and supplies. Also, any sign of "Open World" mode?
Actually if you kill the crew, you get a little more scrap, possibly a weapon, and it's possible to get crew members that way too.
Actually if you kill the crew, you get a little more scrap, possibly a weapon, and it's possible to get crew members that way too.
I got next to no weapons, but did get some nice crew members from my boarding run. I had to dismiss 2 Engi and a Rock because I didn't want to get rid of anyone else, since my crew was already full.
So after watching a few LPs of this game I decided to buy it. Got to the fifth sector on normal difficulty, had fully upgraded shields and weapons power, and had 8 people on my ship at the time. Then I happened to accidentally go into an ion storm in a nebula, which brought me down to no shields, no cloaking, and only two weapons. Needless to say I died a horrible death, but I felt it was a good first run.
Ion storms piss me off because I always disable non-essential systems like the med bay and O2 to power my weapons and shields. When I leave I always forget to turn O2 back on.
Iv got some ideas for weather conditions Nebulas of different fucking colours!! dense nebulas- No teleportation. Different suns. Furthermore blue stars should have the same effect as suns do now. yellow suns having solar flares that can be beaten by 2 shield points. Red stars that can be beaten by one shield point. pulsar stars - Predictably and periodically unleash a wave of radiation that damages a shield and does slight damage to crew members. With less damage with more shields and more damage in unshielded, breached rooms. Black hole- You've got a time limit to jump. else you get ripped apart. perhaps stronger engines providing more time. new astroid fields/belts. Including frozen material. One type of astroid field should have a collection of small projectiles that act sort of like a beam weapon of asteroids (no shield damage, more to the hull)
Ion storms piss me off because I always disable non-essential systems like the med bay and O2 to power my weapons and shields. When I leave I always forget to turn O2 back on.
O2, a non-essential system.
To be fair, you can usually get by with disabling O2 in ion storms if you're smart and periodically re-enable it so that you sit at a stable 60/70%. Besides, if your crew REALLY love the glorious Federation, and aren't just a bunch of drifters, mercs, and ex-slaves loosely held together under the pretense of a better life they'd know to savor every last breath of precious air. [editline]11th October 2012[/editline] I mean air is fucking expensive, man. We've got shields to upgrade and giant gaping holes in the hull to fix.
O2, a non-essential system.
I'd rather have the ability to shoot my guns and power my shields for a minute or two than keep my O2 at a constant 100% when I really don't have to.
My ships regularly run at about 30-40% air since most of the corridors are spaced.
My ships regularly run at about 30-40% air since most of the corridors are spaced.
Now that's the kind of captaining the Federation needs.
I just keep a Zoltan in the O2 / Drone bay when I play Engi and need to power shield and drones.
Would be nice to be able to open all rooms and use all that unused O2 in other rooms. Or just keep one or two rooms sealed and have it refill O2 faster, instead of trying to fill whole ship slowly. Or does the game have some of these features already?

that feel when your entire ship is fine except for the destroyed o2 room that's on fire
that feel when your entire ship is fine except for the destroyed o2 room that's on fire
I keep a rock on my crew for just that reason. Fuckers can put out fire like a fireman.
Got no rockmen Door control + medical right next to eachother enter nebula, can't see shit as I fight a bastard auto scout. small fire in engine room, rush crew to put it out door control bursts into flames, don't notice the flame sound because there's already one fire. put out engine room, panic as I still hear flames 2 empty rooms and the medical room have joined the inferno unable to vent the oxygen or heal my firefighters, my crew gets hurt and is unable to get healed they die a painful death as the fire spreads to the O2 systems.
This was fun. Too bad there are no "achievements" for accomplishing this. [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/939257693853808619/B42F03053D1B6632BA391C36A793A56FB1DD5EE4/[/t]
There is actually, if you light the engine room on fire as well you should get "Some people just want to watch ships burn" or something like that
O2, a non-essential system.
Just like that good ol' CO2 system.
i realy don't like how all nebulas look the same. They are one of the most beautiful things in nature and yet we get... THAT
Just got done fighting the flagship for the bazillionth time. I sent my mantis men over to knock out its weapons like I always do, and on the second stage of the fight I wanted to use them to completely eliminate the crew so all I'd have to do is fight the AI. I took out the med-bay with a burst laser and sent my mantis men over, and just before I could recall them the flagship cloaked and they died a horrible death as they were trying to claw their way out of the room. RIP I thought I was going to lose the battle after that, but the flagship is shockingly easy to take out when there's only one crewmate to put out fires and repair systems.
I finally did it, it only took 40 times to kill the mothership. What a great feeling....
Argh, trying to get achieves for Zoltan cruiser is hard, especially the manpower one.
